| UN calls for end of ‘impunity’ for police violence against black people Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:02 AM PDT Report launched in aftermath of George Floyd murder cites example of 2018 death of Kevin Clarke in UK A UN report that analysed racial justice in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd has called on member states including the UK to end the "impunity" enjoyed by police officers who violate the human rights of black people. The UN human rights office analysis of 190 deaths across the world led to the report's damning conclusion that law enforcement officers are rarely held accountable for killing black people due in part to deficient investigations and an unwillingness to acknowledge the impact of structural racism. Mas-Colell, 76, who served as finance minister from 2010-16, is among 40 officials, including the former Catalan presidents Artur Mas and Carles Puigdemont, accused by a tribunal of illegally using €4.8m of public money between 2011 and 2017 to further the cause of independence. | Third shot of AstraZeneca vaccine could work as booster – study Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:55 AM PDT Oxford University researchers say existing vaccine could work with no need for tweaks A third shot of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine could be an effective booster jab without the need for tweaks, research suggests. An Oxford University study found that giving people a third dose more than six months after their second led to a substantial rise in antibodies and increased the body's T-cell ability to fight coronavirus, including its variants. | Damaging ‘fly-shooting’ fishing in Channel sparks concerns Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:00 PM PDT Small-scale fishers say mostly EU fleet is devastating catches with method that nets entire shoals of fish The UK has been accused of allowing a fleet of mainly EU "fly-shooting" fishing boats "unfettered access" to the Channel, without a proper assessment of the impact on fish populations, the seabed or the livelihoods of small-scale fishers. Organisations representing small-scale fishers on both sides of the Channel have warned that the fleet is having a "devastating" effect on their catches. They are calling for a review of the vessels' UK licences until an impact assessment has been carried out. Continue reading... |

| Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:20 AM PDT Hong Kong to ban flights from the UK from Thursday; Small study suggests third Oxford/AstraZeneca dose after six months could act as booster; British travellers to Portugal face 14-day quarantine
Hong Kong will ban all passenger flights from the UK starting Thursday, as the Chinese city puts Britain on its "extremely high risk" Covid-19 list amid the continuing surge in cases in the country. "The recent rebound of the epidemic situation in the UK and the widespread Delta variant virus strain there, coupled with a number of cases with L452R mutant virus strains detected by tests from people arriving from the UK," the authorities said in a statement on Monday.
A simple third dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine may be enough to work as a booster without having to tweak it, a study reported by PA Media suggests. An Oxford University study found that giving people a third dose more than six months after their second led to a substantial rise in antibodies and increased the body's T-cell ability to fight coronavirus, including its variants. Prof Sir Andrew Pollard, head of the Oxford Vaccine Group, said it is not yet known whether people will need a booster shot in the autumn but the new data shows the existing vaccine could be effective. | Why do writers need agents? | Belinda Carlisle on punk, cocaine, body image and Buddhism: ‘I was born a little bit of a rebel’ Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT As the singer for pioneering all-female band the Go-Go's, Carlisle took on a sexist music industry – at a cost. She talks about overcoming addiction, the media's obsession with her weight and finding happiness in her 60s It hardly matters – who really cares about these things? – and yet it does. This year the Go-Go's will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and earning a place at the museum in Cleveland, Ohio, for all its naffness, is still a mark of influence and recognition. "I always said: 'Fuck them, I don't care,'" says Belinda Carlisle, the band's lead singer. "But when it actually happens, it's: 'Oh, this is not so bad.'" The Go-Go's have had a reappraisal in the past year, thanks mainly to a documentary by the film-maker Alison Ellwood. It tells the story of how these scrappy young LA punks put together a band (the lineup shifted until arriving at the current five members) and made history – incredibly, they are still the only female band who write their own music and play their own instruments to have reached the top of the US album charts. That was in 1982. As with many female artists, belittled for years by the male-dominated music industry and press, the recognition feels long overdue. Continue reading... |
| Sufferers of chronic pain have long been told it’s all in their head. We now know that’s wrong Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT In the first of a series looking at chronic pain and long Covid, Linda Geddes explores the growing realisation that pain can be a disease in and of itself – and the pandemic could be making it worse It started with headaches and neck pain, but no sooner had Tricia Kalinowski's physiotherapist come up with a strategy to tackle these problems, then another area of her body would start to hurt: her lower back, her hip or her jaw. "The physio was chasing the pain up and down my body," says Kalinowski, 60, from Minneapolis, US. Eventually, she was referred to an oral surgeon, who believed the root cause of these issues was a problem with one of the joints in her jaw, so she underwent surgery to replace a thumbnail-sized disc. | End of partnership that kept Burberry at the leading cultural edge Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:08 AM PDT Analysis: Could Marco Gobbetti be followed out of British luxury brand by creative director Riccardo Tisci? The departure of Marco Gobbetti as chief executive of Burberry raises the key question of whether Riccardo Tisci, whom Gobbetti appointed creative director soon after he joined, will remain at the luxury fashion brand. A desire to be closer to family in Italy was given as the reason behind Gobbetti's decision to quit Burberry, and Tisci too is thought to have found it difficult to be away from family in Italy for prolonged periods during the pandemic. The designer was a fashion student in London in his teens and has a deep affection for British culture and subculture, but the pull of his homeland remains strong. Italy has many deep-pocketed luxury brands and a shortage of exciting design talent, so opportunities are likely to present themselves. Continue reading... |

Republicans have succeeded nonetheless. Since January, Republican lawmakers in Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Arkansas and Montana have all enacted new legislation that impose new barriers to voting. The successful Republican filibuster this week – which stalled the sweeping voting rights legislation, the For the People Act – only underscored how Democrats have failed to stop GOP efforts to curtail the vote.
