Event on using technology to fight terrorism told small networks facing an influx and lack resources to block accounts

Smaller social networks are struggling to deal with an influx of extremist users forced off the platforms of the "big four" technology firms, an audience of policymakers and campaigners has been told.

Thanks to the success of companies such as Facebook and Twitter in using technology to spot and block accounts supporting terrorism increasingly quickly, extremists have been forced to find other online forums in which to congregate. Unlike the larger social networks, many lack the resources to respond to police reports, let alone proactively monitor signups for extremists.

"We are the most powerful country in the world and we are getting more and more powerful because I'm a big military person. As an example, if Hillary had won, our military would be decimated," Trump said.

New way of reading scans can predict heart attack risk, research finds

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 11:00 AM PDT

Researchers says colour of fat surrounding a heart's arteries can predict risk, meaning expensive drugs can be given to those most likely to benefit

Heart attacks may soon be easier to predict thanks to a method of reading routine heart scans that can pinpoint those most at risk, research suggests.

Every year, roughly 750,000 Americans have a heart attack and around half die from it, often before reaching hospital. In the UK, someone has a heart attack every seven minutes. Doctors hope to identify the highest risk patients so they can be given preventative treatment and advised to adopt lifestyle changes.

Inside China's 'big data valley': the rapid hi-tech transformation of Guiyang

Kenya election: 'I'm tired of people asking about violence'

Top economist Kwame Owino says Kenyans must resolve to hold 'peaceful' elections and is hopeful women will fill one-third of posts in the new parliament

One of Kenya's leading economists has said he is "sick" of being asked whether the country's general elections next month will trigger violence. He added that people whose sole interest in the polls on 8 August was whether or not there would be clashes were setting a "very low bar" for the country.

Kwame Owino, chief executive of Kenya's Institute of Economic Affairs, told the Guardian he was fed up with people only asking him for a prediction as to whether there would be unrest after the country goes to the polls, as there was after the 2007 elections, which resulted in more than 1,000 people being killed and 600,000 displaced from their homes.

Nature versus nurture of a growing human population | Letters

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 11:48 AM PDT

Having fewer children is a no-brainer, write Robin Maynard and Jonathon Porritt. The overconsuming west must not blame the global south, says Christine Galavotti. It is ironic that Italy bears the brunt of the surge of ecological migrants, says Chris Brausch. Apocalyptic changes in the countryside go largely unnoticed, says John Green

It is heartening to see the Guardian giving considered coverage to the issue of human population and its impacts upon our planet and the threat that continued population growth and excessive consumption pose to the wellbeing and indeed survival of future generations (Best solution to climate change? Fewer children, 12 July). For too long population has been a taboo subject avoided by those normally courageous and outspoken in publicising inconvenient truths about the consequences of ongoing environmental damage.

The new study from Lund University showing that the most effective solution to curbing climate change is for people to have fewer children and smaller families confirms research we highlighted back in 2012, when seeking to persuade the likes of Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund to talk openly and honestly about population issues (with little success!). That earlier study by Oregon State University concluded that, over a lifetime, a family that chose to have one less child would reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 times the amount saved from undertaking all other obvious "eco-friendly" lifestyle changes.

They have neither the funds nor enough expertise to deal with the big tobacco companies' threats, intimidatory letters and law suits.

Nairobi's smoking culture – in pictures

In east Africa, the tobacco industry, including British American Tobacco, has been putting pressure on local governments over some of the regulations attempting to curb smoking.

Every year, more than 6,000 Kenyans are killed by tobacco-linked diseases, part of what the WHO calls the 'biggest public health threats the world has ever faced'. Campaigners say the industry is developing its African market and sees new potential customers as populations and prosperity grow there.

David Levene spent some time documenting the country's smoking culture in Nairobi, noticing the prevalence of cigarette brands in daily life. This collection is gathered from his walks through the city
