Murray Sinclair, a former senator and one of the country's first Indigenous judges, warned that the "undiscovered truths" of the schools are probably far more devastating than many Canadians realize – including the deliberate killing of children by school staff and the likelihood that such crimes were covered up. | Delta Covid variant may be edging race against vaccines Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:49 AM PDT Analysis: research suggests 'scarily fleeting' contact could infect, and that places with high jab rates are susceptible The transmission advantage of the Delta variant that is spreading at pace globally is a sign that the race between vaccination and the virus could tip in favour of the latter unless countries ramp up their immunisation campaigns and practise caution, scientists say. The variant, first detected in India, has been identified in at least 92 countries and is considered the "fittest" variant yet of the virus that causes Covid-19, with its enhanced ability to prey on the vulnerable – particularly in places with low vaccination rates. Authorities in South Africa appeared set to impose new restrictions on Sunday in a belated attempt to stem a rise in Covid-19 that is ravaging the country's economic heartland. The wave of infections has been driven by the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant, weak countermeasures and public fatigue with existing restrictions. The third wave is picking up speed, spreading faster, hitting harder. This is incredibly worrying. With rapidly rising case numbers and increasing reports of serious illness, the latest surge threatens to be Africa's worst yet. AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford have started new trials to test a modified vaccine against the Beta variant, which first emerged in South Africa, Agence France-Presse reports. The booster vaccine's trial will involve around 2,250 participants from Britain, South Africa, Brazil and Poland. Testing booster doses of existing vaccines and new variant vaccines is important to ensure we are best prepared to stay ahead of the pandemic coronavirus, should their use be needed. | US fight against Covid threatened by growing vaccine gap in the south Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:30 AM PDT Less than 50% of adults in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine In the United States, to bring about a long-awaited end to the Covid-19 pandemic, federal and state health officials have been urging all Americans to get vaccinated. But, amid stagnating national vaccine rates, some states in the south have been lagging behind when it comes to vaccinating their populations, raising fears of deepening regional disparities. That raises the prospect that for a complex web of reasons much of the southern US will continue to experience the pandemic in a different way than the rest of America. That is especially worrisome as the south contains more communities that are more vulnerable to the virus. Continue reading... |

| Elton John and John Grant: ‘We help each other. We are both complicated people’ Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:00 AM PDT The pop legend and the US indie star have long been friends and fans of each other's music. With Grant staying chez Elton and about to release a new album, the pair sat down to discuss politics, homophobia – and why Elton should never write lyrics It's a boiling hot day in rural Berkshire, and a man in navy satin Gucci shorts has just walked into his library. It's all ornate chairs, wooden globes and Buddhist statues, its oiled shelves lined with books about history, the arts – and tons about music. The scene is one of airy tranquillity, the perfect place for two culture-loving good friends to hole up for a chat. One of them isn't here yet – he's popped to the bathroom after having his photo taken – but Elton John can't stop raving about John Grant. "We have so many things in common – photography, art, music – it's as if we've known each other for ever. And he's fun!" Grant wanders in shyly in a pink baseball cap, weathered Talk Talk T-shirt, and glossy white DMs. "Much more fun than his records are anyway, haha." Continue reading... |
