Covid-19 mutation increases chance of infection, says study; Beijing locks down 10 residential compounds amid new outbreak; Iran deaths top 100 for first time in two months

French head teachers are awaiting official guidance as to how they can open schools following Emmanuel Macron's surprise decision that all pupils must go back to school.

During his national address on Sunday evening, the president announced it would be obligatory for youngsters to return to classes as of next Monday 22 June.

Confirmed cases of Covid-19 are accelerating in Africa, doubling over the last three weeks. In West Africa, what was the continent's worst affected region, confirmed cases are now rising at a slower rate, doubling in just under a month.

Nigeria remains one the region's most affected countries. Test availability is gradually increasing in part due to the PACT initiative launched by the Africa CDC, which aims to help administer 10m tests in the continent by November.

Survey reveals deep global dissatisfaction with US leadership under Donald Trump

China has beaten the US in the battle for world opinion over the handling of coronavirus, according to new polling, with only three countries out of 53 believing the US has dealt with the pandemic better than its superpower rival.

The survey comes ahead of a major conference on the future of democracy this week, due to be addressed by the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, the former secretary of state John Kerry and the Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong. The conference is likely to be a rallying point for pro-democracy activists as China and the US enter an ever more explicit ideological contest.

Scientists report flaws in WHO-funded study on 2-metre distancing

Posted: 14 Jun 2020 08:07 AM PDT

Mistakes mean findings should not be used as evidence for relaxing rule, say professors

Senior scientists have reported flaws in an influential World Health Organization-commissioned study into the risks of coronavirus infection and say it should not be used as evidence for relaxing the UK's 2-metre physical distancing rule.

Critics of the distancing advice, which states that people should keep at least 2 metres apart, believe it is too cautious. They seized on the research commissioned by the WHO, which suggested a reduction from 2 metres to 1 would raise infection risk only marginally, from 1.3% to 2.6%.

Donald Trump's niece Mary set to publish explosive book about her family

Posted: 15 Jun 2020 05:17 AM PDT

Too Much and Never Enough, due in August, is expected to detail her role as primary source for exposé of the president's tax affairs

Donald Trump's niece, Mary Trump, will publish a "harrowing and salacious" book about the president this August, according to reports.

The Daily Beast revealed on Monday that Mary Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump's late brother Fred Trump Jr, will release Too Much and Never Enough with Simon & Schuster on 11 August. The timing, a few weeks before this year's Republican National Convention, means any revelations could be particularly damaging for the president. The book is expected to lay out how she was a primary source for the New York Times' Pulitzer-winning investigation into Donald Trump's "dubious tax schemes" during the 1990s and will share "harrowing and salacious" stories about the US president.

Emissions from 13 dairy firms match those of entire UK, says report

Posted: 14 Jun 2020 11:01 PM PDT

Exclusive: Milk giants' climate impact rising and production caps needed, say researchers

The biggest dairy companies in the world have the same combined greenhouse gas emissions as the UK, the sixth biggest economy in the world, according to a new report.

The analysis shows the impact of the 13 firms on the climate crisis is growing, with an 11% increase in emissions in the two years after the 2015 Paris climate change agreement, largely due to consolidation in the sector. Scientific reports have shown that consumption of dairy, as well as meat, must be reduced significantly in rich nations to tackle the climate emergency.

Internal European commission emails seen by the Guardian reveal officials in Brussels had been fearful of a backlash when deciding against full disclosure of Croatia's lack of commitment to a monitoring mechanism that ministers had previously agreed to fund with EU money.

The stranded babies of Kyiv and the women who give birth for money

Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:00 AM PDT

Lockdown exposed the scale of the commercial baby business in Ukraine, and now women hired for their wombs are speaking out

Some are crying in their cots; others are being cradled or bottle-fed by nannies. These newborns are not in the nursery of a maternity hospital, they are lined up side by side in two large reception rooms of the improbably named Hotel Venice on the outskirts of Kyiv, protected by outer walls and barbed wire.

They are the children of foreign couples born to Ukrainian surrogate mothers at the Kyiv-based BioTexCom Centre for Human Reproduction, the largest surrogacy clinic in the world. They're stranded in the hotel because their biological parents have not been able to travel in or out of Ukraine since borders closed in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aid sector must do more to tackle its white supremacy problem

Posted: 14 Jun 2020 11:15 PM PDT

Racism is embedded in structures and power dynamics, so we should logically conclude that we are not immune

As events unfold in the US and across the world, colleagues in the aid sector are closely watching, and sharing their solidarity. After all they are allies and educators of human rights.

Yet as various institutions grapple with their failure to address discrimination, there has been a disappointing lack of self-reflection in our sector. If we understand that racism is embedded in structures, that it is part of engrained power dynamics, we should logically conclude that we are not immune.

Chile is among the countries with the highest number of daily cases relative to population size.

England: are coronavirus cases falling or rising near you?

Posted: 15 Jun 2020 01:33 AM PDT

How has Covid-19 progressed where you live?

The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight.

By almost any measure, the conviction of Maria Ressa and her former colleague, researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos Jr, will have serious implications for democracy in the Philippines.

On Monday morning, a court in Manila found the pair guilty of 'cyber libel', for a story published in 2012 on the news website Rappler.com that Ressa founded and now leads. The judge released them on bail pending an appeal, but if they lose, they could spend up to seven years in prison.

Andy Cowell runs the Fenn Bell Conservation Project in Medway, Kent. After 12 weeks of closure, as running costs mounted, zoos were suddenly told with less than a week's notice that they could reopen on Monday to reduced visitors. He tells Richard Sprenger why he is so angry at how the situation has been handled and fears the possibility of having to euthanise his animals
