Flight attendants claim airline's campaign to use younger, more attractive staff is latest example of Russia's 'war against women'

Two Aeroflot flight attendants are to have their gender discrimination claims against the airline heard in court in Moscow this week in the first case of its kind to involve a major, state-controlled Russian company.

The two women, both in their 40s, are suing after the Russian carrier photographed and measured all flight attendants and, their claim argues, took those women who were a Russian size 48 (a UK size 14) or larger off the much coveted – and better paid – long-haul international flights. They are among hundreds of female Aeroflot employees who say they've been discriminated against.

The referee blew the whistle. And Olson's snap – a pass between his legs to help set up a kick – was straight and true.

"It turned out to be a beautiful moment," Olson said.

Pollution levels in Bolivia plummet on nationwide car-free day

Posted: 03 Sep 2017 10:06 AM PDT

Country wants to reclaim physical activity in age when young people are focused on computers, says government spokeswoman

Air pollution levels have plunged in cities across Bolivia as the country marked a nationwide car-free day in which all non-emergency vehicles were banned from city streets.

As Bolivia's middle-class population has increased over the past 10 years so has the number of cars clogging city streets. The car-free event started 18 years ago in Cochabamba, one of Latin America's five most polluted cities, and has gradually taken root across the country. By 2011, it had become so popular that Bolivia's legislature declared a yearly "Day of the Pedestrian and Cyclist in Defence of Mother Earth".

Is Elon Musk's plan for a road network beneath LA more than a pipe dream?

Posted: 04 Sep 2017 02:13 AM PDT

Cities attract wild ideas, from Qinhuangdao's straddling bus to London's bike lanes in the sky. As Musk's Boring Company starts tunnelling, could his plans for underground roads and Hyperloop trains prove the doubters wrong?

In early August, the city council of Hawthorne, California, held a special meeting. It had set aside this time to discuss a major construction project proposed by a high profile company based there in the sprawling Los Angeles basin.

The company was Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, the rocket-building offshoot of the electric car company Tesla, run by the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. SpaceX had recently spun off another entity, this one aimed at disrupting the tunnel boring business, cheekily named the Boring Company – and it needed the City of Hawthorne's cooperation.

Michel Temer is a legitimate president – and he’s putting Brazil back on its feet | Letters

Posted: 03 Sep 2017 10:37 AM PDT

Critics of Brazil's president are wrong, writes Eduardo dos Santos, Brazilian ambassador to the UK. He is overseeing a social and economic renaissance

In 2014, Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer were elected together, respectively, as president and vice-president of Brazil. As a result of the constitutional process that led to the impeachment of Rousseff, approved by the national congress with the scrutiny of the federal supreme court, Temer took over as president. To say, therefore, that his government is illegitimate (Letters, 31 August) is not only untrue, but also reveals a misjudgment of the Brazilian political system. Under the rule of law, our democratic and republican institutions have proved once again their resilience in the face of a very serious crisis.

It is also incorrect to argue that Temer is reversing social programmes. On the contrary, his government is putting the country back on track after the tremendous fiscal, economic and social crises created in the previous years, which led to the worst recession and unemployment rate the country has ever endured. Now economic growth is back on the rise, jobs are being recovered and new opportunities for trade and investment are being generated.

'We'd rather die than lose': villagers in Indonesia fight for a land rights revolution

Posted: 03 Sep 2017 11:00 PM PDT

A small community on the island of Sumatra is at the heart of a battle for traditional territories that could finally resolve the muddled and exploitative system of laws governing land ownership in Indonesia

It is cold and late on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Huddled around a map, a group of elders are planning their battle strategy. In a milestone victory last year, they were promised rights to the land their village has controlled for generations, but today they have had bad news. The local inspector wants to slice off a piece of the forest where they harvest benzoin – a substance like frankincense – and give it to a large pulp company. They see this as a betrayal.

The elders debate in a mix of languages – Batak and bahasa Indonesia – while sipping tea and planning how they will resume the fight the next day. For years now, almost every day has involved this kind of planning.

North Korea bomb: Trump’s trade threat to China not seen as credible

Posted: 03 Sep 2017 11:53 AM PDT

The US imported $463bn worth of goods from China in 2016. Cutting off trade with Beijing would trigger a protectionist spiral leading to a global recession

Donald Trump huddled with his national security advisers on Sunday to try to decide on a response to North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test.

Pyongyang said it had detonated a hydrogen bomb, using nuclear fusion as well as fission, and the seismic data suggested a blast that was ten times as big as any of its previous tests.

Did North Korea just test a hydrogen bomb? | Ian Sample

Scepticism met North Korea's claims that last January's test involved an H-bomb. The latest one leaves less room for doubt

North Korea's nuclear test created tremors around the world. Shockwaves were first picked up at a seismic station 230 miles away in Mudanjiang, China, where the needle sprang into action less than a minute after the blast. Seconds later, the tremors reached instruments in South Korea and Japan, and within 12 minutes had been detected in Canada, Australia and at the Eskdalemuir Observatory in Scotland.

More than 130 stations recorded shockwaves, which after 20 minutes had reached as far as Argentina 12,000 miles from the test site.

North Korea's latest nuclear test reflects failure of Trump's bellicose rhetoric

Posted: 03 Sep 2017 08:42 AM PDT

Ignoring Trump's warning that 'fire and fury' would befall North Korea, Kim Jong-un has conducted his most provocative ballistic missile test to date

Donald Trump responded to North Korea's sixth nuclear test by turning on one of Washington's closest allies in the region, South Korea, blaming it on Seoul's policy of "appeasement".

Pyongyang's rhetoric and actions leading up to the test have been aimed at the US, however, and detonation of the most powerful nuclear device the regime has built so far reflects the failure of any remaining hope Trump might have had that his own bellicose rhetoric would work as a deterrent.
