Warren Entsch 'lives in hope' his marriage equality bill will succeed eventually – politics live

Posted: 17 Aug 2015 12:58 AM PDT

The government would face a loss of 36 seats according to the latest Fairfax polling as parliament resumes today, as the Coalition MP Warren Entsch introduced his same-sex marriage bill. Follow the day's news live …

This is what we know now - that we did not know this morning.

Tony Abbott's hand-picked trade union royal commissioner Dyson Heydon could be forced to consider his own disqualification by the end of this week. This is because the ACTU and the Labor party are currently poring over emails between the organisers of a Liberal party fundraising event and Heydon's office - released by the latter. After legal wrangling, Heydon agreed to give the unions until Thursday to consider whether to urge his disqualification. If the ACTU decides to urge disqualification, Heydon will hear the arguments on Friday morning.

The Liberal senator Cory Bernardi says there are fewer more vehement opponents to same-sex marriage than himself.

We won't be arguing with that.

It is clear Mr Abbott is one of the worst prime ministers Australia has ever had.

When's a political fundraiser not a fundraiser? When it doesn't raise much

Posted: 17 Aug 2015 12:40 AM PDT

Coalition defends Dyson Heydon as the royal commissioner says he 'overlooked' the fact that law lecture was at a Liberal party event to raise funds

The government's defence of Dyson Heydon hinges on the argument that the law lecture the royal commissioner agreed to give was not a fundraiser because it wasn't going to raise very much money – even though the invitation did solicit donations for the New South Wales Liberals' election campaign and provide details of the relevant commonwealth electoral disclosure laws.

Apparently not-very-successful fundraisers don't count as fundraisers.

Jay Z and Timbaland set to testify in Big Pimpin' lawsuit

Posted: 17 Aug 2015 12:09 AM PDT

Duo likely to appear in court to respond to accusations that their sample of the Egyptian song Khosara Khosara was illegal

Following the star appearances in the Blurred Lines case – in which Robin Thicke managed to show the world that he didn't write the song, just took the writing credit for it – two more music superstars will be hoping a court appearance doesn't go horribly wrong.

Jay Z and Timbaland are expected to testify in a lawsuit brought by the descendants of an Egyptian composer over a sample used in the 1999 hit Big Pimpin'. The case goes to court in California on 13 October.

'Your ass is mine,' says rapist to boy, 15, at youth home, royal commission hears

Posted: 17 Aug 2015 12:04 AM PDT

Norman Latham, 62, says Douglas Wilkie, senior 'screw' at Turana youth centre, said: 'You've had no visitors, you have no family, your ass belongs to us'

A 62-year-old man has described how two senior staff members at the Turana youth training centre, where he was a ward of the state, repeatedly raped him from the age of 15 and how he was bashed by a police officer to whom he reported the abuse.

Giving evidence to the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse on Monday, Norman Latham said he was made a ward of the state in 1962 when he was 15 because his father repeatedly bashed him and his mother, prompting him to run away from home frequently.

South Ronaldsay's Festival of the Horse – in pictures

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:45 PM PDT

The 200-year-old tradition on Orkney island of South Ronaldsay comprises the festival alongside the boys' ploughing match. Originally only boys participated – with the ploughing match done over damp sands using miniature ploughs. Prizes are given for straightness of line, depth, finish and the condition of their plough. Since a revival in the 20th century, girls were allowed to join in, but only in the horse festival, where contestants dress as Clydesdale horses and are judged on appearance of their harness and outfit decorations

Tony Abbott ‘doing everything to try and stop marriage equality’, says Labor MP – video

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:41 PM PDT

Terri Butler, Labor MP for Griffith in Queensland, talks to media outside Parliament House about a cross-party bill on same-sex marriage tabled by Coalition MP Warren Entsch on Monday. Butler says she is disappointed moderates in the Liberal party haven't been given the opportunity to debate and vote upon a bill. Coalition ministers Christopher Pyne and Malcolm Turnbull were the only government frontbenchers present for the bill's introduction.

Sydney siege inquest: court not told Monis was on bail at time of alleged assaults – as it happened

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:39 PM PDT

The inquest into the deaths of Tori Johnson, Katrina Dawson and Man Haron Monis resumes. Follow the day's news here

With that evidence done for the day, detective senior constable Denise Vavayis from the NSW police sex crimes squad will be back tomorrow for further evidence.

The questions over Man Haron Monis being granted bail are mounting. Today we have learned:

The Director of Public Prosecutions solicitor who did the bail application of Man Haron Monis in October 2014 had never done a bail application before.

Detective senior constable Denise Vavayis says she did not know that Monis had been on bail when three of his sexual and indecent assault offences were allegedly committed.

Had we been aware of the overlaps, we would have brought it to the attention of the DPP when seeking bail.

Not necessarily, he was still the DPP solicitor with carriage of the manner, my job in that respect is to provide him with the information I'm aware of. My job is not to make his decisions for him or to be an expert in terms of what he does in the court room, that's his domain.

Sydney siege: magistrate unaware Man Haron Monis on bail at time of alleged sex assaults

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:26 PM PDT

Inquest hears prosecutor was never told Monis had been accused of three counts of sexual assault while on bail for earlier offences in 2010

The magistrate who granted Man Haron Monis bail two months before the Sydney siege was never told the gunman had allegedly committed sexual assault while on bail for an earlier offence, a coroner's inquest has heard.

Had that information been raised with the court, "it's at least possible that Mr Monis's bail may have been refused", counsel assisting Jeremy Gormly SC said.

Tale of two Eritreans offers glimpse inside Africa's most secretive state

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:15 PM PDT

As thousands flee every month and reports of repression abound, two men's diverging paths paint a more complex picture of life in Eritrea

Kemal and Mohammed have never met, but until recently their lives were typical of a peaceful, comfortable existence in middle-class Eritrea.

Idyllic childhood evenings were spent playing football in the winding, sun-swept streets of the capital, Asmara. As they got older, they passed time sipping coffee or eating pisseti – mini pizzas – in the art deco cafes that dot the city, or at popular cinemas built when Eritrea was an Italian colony. Then came university, and eventually jobs as civil servants, following in the footsteps of their parents.

Repression, torture and defections in droves – why thousands of refugees are abandoning the small Horn of Africa state every month

Hundreds of thousands of Eritreans are voting with their feet and embarking on a perilous journey north through Sudan and Libya or to Egypt and Israel, their goal to eventually reach safer destinations in Europe. An estimated 5,000 people leave the small Horn of Africa country every month, fleeing the highly repressive regime run by president Isaias Afwerki.

Putting slavery firmly on development agenda is just the beginning | Kevin Hyland

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

A call to end modern slavery is a worthy addition to the sustainable development goals, but nothing will change until the root causes of exploitation are tackled

From India's brick kilns to North Korean labour camps in Siberia – from fishing boats off the coast of Thailand to the enslavement of children in cannabis factories and nail bars across the UK – global awareness of the nature and scale of modern slavery is growing.

Just as importantly, the understanding of slavery as a challenge and indeed consequence of our globalised world is finding its way on to national and international agendas.

Rush for dual-nationality passports as EU migrants fear Brexit

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

From work permits to healthcare, pensions to tax, EU citizens in UK and Britons in Europe worry they could be in a precarious position after 2016's referendum

Thousands of people – continental Europeans in Britain as well as UK citizens abroad – are so alarmed at the potential impact of a British exit from the European Union on their lives that they are applying for a second passport, Guardian research suggests.

A Guardian website survey received more than 1,200 responses from European citizens, a large majority of whom were in the process of changing nationality or citizenship, or considering doing so. Many expressed concern that without dual nationality, an "out" vote in Britain's membership referendum could make life as an EU citizen in the UK, or as a UK citizen in the EU, far more problematic.

Tianjin blasts: fears over cyanide pollution as Chinese media lambasts officials

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 10:35 PM PDT

High levels of sodium cyanide have been detected by wastewater monitors amid growing anger at the blasts which killed at least 114 people

Alarming levels of sodium cyanide have been found at wastewater monitoring stations in the disaster-stricken city of Tianjin almost five days after a series of deadly explosions claimed at least 114 lives and sparked intense criticism of the Chinese government.

At a press conference on Monday morning, Bao Jingling, the chief engineer from Tianjin's environmental protection bureau, said excessive levels of the toxic chemical had been detected in surface wastewater at the blast site. The highest levels detected were 27 times acceptable limits.

Egyptian president ratifies law to punish 'false' reporting of terror attacks

Posted: 16 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has approved the bill which could see journalists fined and banned from working for 'false' reporting of militant attacks

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ratified a controversial new anti-terrorism law which stipulates exorbitant fines, and possible suspension from employment, for "false" reporting on militant attacks.

The government sped up the passage of the law after the state prosecutor was assassinated in a car bombing in late June, followed by a large-scale jihadist attack in the Sinai peninsula days later.

The exploitation of migrants has become our way of life | Felicity Lawrence

The British right pretends to be tough on immigration but promotes a business model that depends on it

When the foreign secretary, Philip Hammond, talked of the threat to the UK from "marauding migrants" at Calais last week, I decided to review the stories of the hundreds of foreign-born workers I have met in more than a decade of writing about their lives in the UK: those working for the mainstream economy, albeit hidden in the shadows of its long subcontracted supply chains, whether in food production, construction, care work, cleaning or catering.

What becomes immediately clear is the deep dishonesty at the heart of much of the rhetoric on this issue. The right claims to be tough on immigration, but it is the opposite of tough on the causes of immigration. It promotes a business model that depends on a constant churn of workers to carry out jobs that are underpaid and insecure at best, and all too often dirty, dangerous, and degrading. It requires not just immigration, but immigration without end, since only the newly arrived, the desperate and the vulnerable will tolerate the conditions that have been created, as the roll call of migrant workers I have met, with its constantly changing nationalities, shows.
