When Anthony Albanese touches down in Suva on Wednesday to attend his first Pacific Islands Forum, he will be walking in to a regional meeting that is putting on a brave face.

While it had been thought that the forum would be focused on the growing influence of China and as an opportunity for Australia to showcase its new climate credentials, Albanese will arrive to a group wrestling with other problems.

Noongar grandmother fears for boy's safety if state government moves him from Banksia Hill juvenile centre to maximum security jail

A Noongar grandmother has said she fears her teenage grandson could die if the West Australian government goes ahead with its plan to transfer 20 boys – some as young as 14 – from Perth's Banksia Hill juvenile detention centre to a maximum security adult jail.

The government said it would proceed with the transfer because of disruption and damage caused by a "minority" of young people incarcerated at the centre.

Donetsk town of Chasiv Yar reels from deadly Russian rocket strike

Residents say they have nowhere to go nor the means to leave as frontline encroaches on civilians

In the small town of Chasiv Yar, not far from Ukraine's eastern frontlines, rescue workers were still searching through the wreckage left by Saturday's multiple rocket strike. At least 43 people died, one of the biggest losses of life in Ukrainian-controlled Donbas since a single Russian rocket killed at least 52 people at the train station in the nearby town of Kramatorsk in April.

The rescuers had managed to pull nine people out of the rubble but by Tuesday, they told the Guardian, they expected to recover only corpses.

The new advice for schools in England has been issued following national outcry over the treatment of a 15-year-old black girl, known as Child Q, who was strip-searched by female police officers in 2020 after she was wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis at her school in east London.

As local councils in England continue to feel the sting of over a decade of budget-slashing austerity policies, Brent council has launched an initiative to give residents the power to decide how they spend £2.25m of funding for local projects.

The participatory budgeting process was first pioneered in Porto Alegre in Brazil. It has been trialled in Tower Hamlets, but is a first for Brent council which trialled a much smaller version of the initiative in January, with a funding pot of £500,000.

Starbucks says it will close 16 US stores out of concern for employee safety

Executives say the coffee giant's stores were not immune to problems related to mental health and drug use

Starbucks will close 16 US stores by the end of July, citing safety concerns and disruptive behavior at locations in Los Angeles, Seattle and other large cities.

Six stores in Seattle, six in LA, two in Portland, one in Philadelphia and one in Washington DC will close, a Starbucks spokesperson confirmed.
