Weatherwatch: ‘evil wind’ around African lake that can be deadly Posted: 13 Jul 2022 10:00 PM PDT Phenomenon at Lake Kivu happens when CO2 from volcanic activity leaks through cracks in the ground The Swahili word mazuku means roughly "evil wind" and refers to a lethal phenomenon around Lake Kivu on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. Carbon dioxide from volcanic activity leaks from cracks in the ground. The gas is heavier than air and collects in hollows, cellars, and low-lying areas, forming invisible and sometimes deadly pools, especially on windless nights. High concentrations of CO2 produce dizziness, nausea, confusion and weakness. Unwary victims who do not leave immediately tend to collapse then die in the high concentration of gas close to the ground. Continue reading... |

As G20 ministers and central bank governors gather in Bali this week, they face a global economic outlook that has darkened significantly. Recent indicators imply a weak second quarter – and we will be projecting a further downgrade to global growth for both 2022 and 2023 in our World Economic Outlook Update later this month. Images of Ukrainian territorial defence troops having dinner outside the town of Bucha, near Kyiv, have dropped over the wires this morning. Hot meals were served to servicemen after a combat tactic training exercise. It is going to be a tough 2022—and possibly an even tougher 2023, with increased risk of recession. The human tragedy of the war in Ukraine has worsened. So, too, has its economic impact especially through commodity price shocks that are slowing growth and exacerbating a cost-of-living crisis that affects hundreds of millions of people—and especially poor people who cannot afford to feed their families. And it's only getting worse. Continue reading... |

Biden tours Middle East as trip offers respite from low approval in US – live Posted: 14 Jul 2022 06:34 AM PDT President on second day of Israel visit while new poll finds only a minority of Americans want him to run for a second term The Guardian's Lauren Gambino reports on why Biden probably won't be receiving any awards from the American public, at least not right now: Another searing inflation report yesterday underscored the deep challenges facing Democrats ahead of this year's critical midterm elections, with widespread pessimism about the state of the US economy and Joe Biden's stewardship of it. Since the start of President Biden's rich career in public service in the 1970s, he has established himself as a person who loves Israel and is a true friend of the whole Jewish People. Penny Mordaunt’s bid for Tory leadership looks increasingly credible Posted: 14 Jul 2022 06:17 AM PDT Analysis: Confident message from MP relatively untainted by Johnson era seems to resonate with many Conservatives Penny Mordaunt's team seemed as surprised as anyone that she had overhauled Liz Truss to come second in Wednesday's first round of voting to be the UK's next prime minister – but now they believe she has what it takes to go all the way to the final two. With the policy debate depressingly narrow – tax cuts now vs tax cuts soon – MPs are assessing candidates on their election-fighting credentials. That means style as well as substance; and here, Mordaunt seems to have captured something that appeals to Tory MPs' current mood. Continue reading... |

Biden battered by inflation and low approval ratings | First Thing Posted: 14 Jul 2022 03:10 AM PDT The economy, energy prices and upcoming midterms weigh heavily on the president during his Middle East trip. Plus, House committee argues Capitol attack was premeditated Good morning. Domestic concerns were high on Joe Biden's agenda as he embarked on his tour of the Middle East on Wednesday, with soaring inflation hitting the president's approval ratings ahead of this year's midterm elections. Economic concerns are paramount for "non-white and working class voters", a New York Times/Siena College poll found, while white college-educated voters are more focused on issues like abortion and guns. Only 20% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say Biden's policies have improved the economy. But it could still be a tighter race than expected, following a series of mass shootings, the supreme court ruling on Roe v Wade, and recent revelations about Donald Trump's attempts to hold on to power. What did Georgieva recommend? She called for raised interest rates, reduced government debt and more global cooperation. Continue reading... |
