| UK minister in BVI for urgent talks on sanctioning Russian oligarchs Posted: 22 Mar 2022 11:30 PM PDT Amanda Melling's visit follows fears UK tax havens may offer loophole for those trying to avoid clampdown A Foreign Office minister has flown to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to hold urgent discussions on how sanctions against Russian oligarchs with cash stored in the secretive islands can be implemented, amid fears. UK tax havens may provide a loophole for those trying to escape the international clampdown. Amanda Milling's visit follows news that a succession of oligarchs appeared to have hidden their assets in trusts based in the BVI in a bid to put them beyond reach of UK sanctions. British sanctions laws apply in the overseas territories, and enforcement officers are supposed to have full access to registers of beneficial ownerships. Continue reading... |

| End of an era as Canada’s oldest ‘prairie castle’ to be dismantled Posted: 22 Mar 2022 03:00 AM PDT Grain elevator built in 1897 that towered over Elva in Manitoba symbolic of western Canada's history and heritage For nearly 125 years, a wooden grain elevator towered over the town of Elva, visible from miles away and distinguishing the community as an economic hub in the Canadian Prairies. The structure endured frigid cold, beating rains and harsh sun, but after decades of neglect, its owner has announced plans to dismantle the country's oldest "prairie castle", closing a chapter in the region's history. David Koch: Have you spoken to the "mean girls" – Kristina Keneally, Penny Wong – in the last week or so since Kimberly Kitching's death about the allegations of bullying? I think that term is really unfortunate. She used it, it is not just us. There is a lot of people speaking on other people's behalf at the moment. I think that in politics, there are a range of people who are involved in party politics who play it pretty hard. One of those was Kimberly Kitching. She was somebody who engaged in politics and was passionate about her belief and from time to time that could produce some conflict. But it needs to be done in a way that is respectful, in a way that is understanding, and attempts to reach consensus. It is rather bizarre ... I am always available and indeed I lobby regularly to be on the Sunrise program. I am always happy to discuss things with the media, but I won't be taking lectures from a prime minister who visited Lismore and had strict streets shut off so victims of floods could not get near him. | Posted: 22 Mar 2022 11:49 PM PDT Latest updates: Ukraine president says convoy seized near Mangush in south; Biden prepares to fly to Europe
Russian troops continue to advance on key cities across Ukraine. The latest conviction of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Tuesday reflects the Russian government's intensified crackdown on dissent and free expression, Human Rights Watch has said. This verdict is apparently intended not only to silence Navalny but to serve as a warning to Russian civil society and anyone who dares to stand up to the Kremlin's policies." The cases against Navalny are part of the Kremlin's grim landscape of repression against Russia's civil society and peaceful dissent, which has drastically intensified since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin seems determined to isolate Russian society from the outside world to cut Russians off from uncomfortable facts, including about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. So it's hardly surprising that Russian authorities are doubling down on smearing and silencing Navalny and others who can tell people not to believe the Kremlin's lies and that the world is watching."
