Ratko Mladić, ‘butcher of Bosnia’, loses appeal against genocide conviction

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 09:07 AM PDT

Judgment means 78-year-old former Bosnian Serb military chief will spend the rest of his life in prison

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb commander nicknamed the "butcher of Bosnia", will spend the rest of his life in prison after a UN court dismissed his final appeal against convictions for genocide and crimes against humanity, in a judgment hailed as "historic" by the White House.

Unlike during previous appearances at the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, the 78-year-old showed little emotion as an hour-long reading of the judgment finally put an end to attempts to quash the charges against him.

Experts have warned that US tech companies, including Google, Amazon and Facebook, could pay less tax in the UK and several other big economies under global reforms agreed at the weekend by the G7.

In a key stumbling block emerging days after the landmark deal, research from the TaxWatch campaign group indicates that the UK Treasury stands to lose about £230m from the taxes paid each year by four of the big US tech firms.

Coronavirus live news: Pfizer to expand trial in under-12s; more than 1m Europeans get Covid travel pass

Up to 4,500 children under 12 to be enrolled in US, Finland, Poland and Spain; health certificate being rolled out to unlock travel within the bloc

Conservative backbencher Steve Baker has urged the UK government to press ahead with lifting England's remaining Covid restrictions on 21 June despite a sharp rise in cases.

He claimed that by that date, all over-50s and vulnerable younger adults should have been given the opportunity to receive two doses of Covid vaccine.

These groups represent about 99% of Covid deaths and about 80% of hospitalisations. As of today, according to announcements made by the government, these groups should all have been offered a chance to have had a second dose. It would be helpful for the government to clarify that this has been achieved.

If this brilliant milestone isn't enough to convince ministers that we need to lift all remaining restrictions – especially social distancing requirements – on 21 June, nothing will ever get us out of this.

Can we vaccinate the world against Covid by the end of 2022?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Achieving herd immunity is possible – and necessary – but requires quick action, say experts

As ambitious declarations go – even for Boris Johnson – it was a big one. At the weekend, the UK prime minister said he would urge the G7 leaders to vaccinate the world against Covid by the end of next year.

But is this feasible? That rather depends on your definition. No country will vaccinate every adult. Vaccinating enough to achieve herd immunity, which could be 60% or 70%, is the real aim. It is possible to achieve that by December 2022, say experts, but only if the G7 leading economies move immediately to make it happen.

Personality continues to trump policy as German elections loom

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 07:33 AM PDT

Analysis: Armin Laschet's campaign to succeed Angela Merkel is copying her strategy of skirting around hard political choices

Angela Merkel's method of winning elections has earned its own phrase among German political scientists: "asymmetric demobilisation", the art of running a campaign that skirts around hot-button issues in order to present voters with a choice between personalities rather than policies.

Three and a half months before Germany goes to the polls, Merkel's aspiring successor Armin Laschet seems to have taken her strategy to heart. With a campaign that has so far failed to tackle the country's hard choices on carbon emissions, digitisation, eurozone integration and military spending, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its candidate for chancellor may get away with it too.

‘I found a snake in the toilet!’: Guardian readers on their holiday disasters

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 06:25 AM PDT

Holidays, especially abroad, are off the cards for many this summer. So it's good to remember they aren't always the idyllic break we dream of. Here are our readers worst experiences

We went on holiday for Christmas to a friend's parents house in Marlo – a village in Victoria, Australia. We got there on Christmas Eve to find the only shop was pretty bare – so Christmas lunch was a frozen turkey roll, Fanta, chips and some frozen peas. I made a Christmas tree out of a stick and some toilet rolls, determined to be cheerful. On Christmas morning, I woke up and went outside. It was nice and hot – yay, beach day! Then I stepped on a very large brown snake on the doorstep and screamed. I found another snake in the lounge room, one in the toilet, and others all around the house. It was my idea of hell. I had no idea whether they were poisonous but it didn't matter. I was terrified. Lesley Podesta, retired, Australia

‘Birds are here for everyone’: how Black birdwatchers are finding a community

In a 2011 study by the Fish and Wildlife Service, 93% of birders surveyed were white while just 4% were Black

Cooper says he doesn't usually lead bird walks because of the responsibility that comes with it. "I feel awful if we go out and we don't see a lot of good birds," he says.

Joe Biden’s mission at the G7 summit: to recruit allies for the next cold war | Rafael Behr

The US risks being superseded by China as the prime global power within decades. For Washington, the idea is appalling

Joe Biden crosses the Atlantic this week on a tide of goodwill. After four years of Donald Trump, European leaders are grateful for the mere fact of a US president who believes in democracy and understands diplomacy.

Trump had no concept of historical alliance, strategic partnership or mutual interest. He saw multilateral institutions as conspiracies against US power, which he could not distinguish from his own ego. He heard European talk of a rules-based international order as the contemptible bleating of weakling nations.

‘On a rampage’: the African women fighting to end FGM

Female genital mutilation has revived under Covid but activists are pushing hard to save girls at risk

It was when the phone started ringing with calls from worried mothers in Somalia that Ifrah Ahmed knew she was making an impact. The women told her their daughters had been bleeding for hours after undergoing female genital mutilation and asked what to do. Ahmed told them to seek medical attention, and probably saved lives by doing so.

The mothers called because they had heard the story of a 10-year-old girl who had bled to death after being cut in central Galmudug state in July 2018. It was the first confirmed death in years in a country where any complications arising from FGM are generally denied and it gained worldwide attention. The death was first revealed by a local activist who had been trained by Ahmed's foundation in how to use the media to publicise her work.
