| Hong Kong’s courts should reflect China’s will, says official Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:46 AM PDT Statement seen as warning to judiciary to uphold Beijing's interests or risk losing independence Hong Kong's judicial system should reflect the will and interests of the Chinese nation, a senior official overseeing the national security law has said. The comments have been interpreted as a clear instruction from Beijing that Hong Kong's once-vaunted court system is now expected to operate in the interests of the central government in Beijing, rather than the rule of law. | Canada heatwave: dozens dead as searing plus-40C temperatures grip west Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:42 PM PDT Police say a spate of sudden fatalities in normally temperate Vancouver is being caused by the unprecedentedly hot weather A searing heatwave that settled over western Canada for several days has been blamed for helping to cause the deaths of dozens of people in the Vancouver area. With a new record temperature for Canada of 47.9C (118F) set on Monday, police in the Burnaby area of Vancouver said they responded to 25 sudden-death calls in a 24-hour period starting on Monday. | England beat Germany as Sterling and Kane send them to Euro 2020 last eight Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:51 AM PDT For England, it was always going to be about finding the moment, the one to blow apart a tight game, to cut through so much negative tournament history – particularly at the hands of Germany. And for long spells, as the tension rose to near unbearable levels at a raucous and emotional Wembley, the home crowd wondered whether it would come. Gareth Southgate had reverted to a 3-4-3, ignoring the clamour for greater fantasy and more creative players. It was the England manager sticking bravely to his principles, seeking security, the platform for the moment, and a part of the equation was patience, which was not in abundant supply inside the stadium. "In neglecting important decisions by the party that called for organisational, material and science and technological measures to support prolonged anti-epidemic work in face of a global health crisis, the officials in charge have caused a grave incident that created a huge crisis for the safety of the country and its people," the state-run KCNA news agency quoted Kim as telling a meeting of the ruling party's politburo. | Huawei lawyers claim emails prove US has no grounds to extradite CFO from Canada Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT Lawyers will try to persuade Canadian court to permit new documents to be introduced as evidence to clear Meng Wanzhou US justice department's battle to extradite Meng Wanzhou from Canada has taken a fresh turn as lawyers for Huawei's chief financial officer claimed that internal emails and bank documents prove there is no grounds to extradite her to the US. Meng, 48, was arrested on a US warrant at Vancouver airport in late 2018, and has been battling extradition to the US. Her detention infuriated the Chinese government and has helped drag relations between Beijing and Ottawa to their lowest point in years. Continue reading... |
| Offsets being used in Colombia to dodge carbon taxes – report Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Fossil fuel levy can be avoided by buying carbon offsets that may have no benefit for climate Forest protection carbon offsets that may have no benefit to the climate have been used by polluters to avoid paying carbon taxes in Colombia, according to a report. In 2016, a levy of about $5 (£3.60) was introduced in the South American country to cover the use of some fossil fuels. However, companies that emit carbon dioxide can avoid paying the tax by buying carbon offsets from Colombian emission reduction projects, including those that conserve threatened natural carbon banks such as peatlands, forests and mangrove swamps. Although still quite low, the number of Indonesian children contracting the coronavirus has almost tripled since May, with infant deaths from Covid rising sharply as the country suffers its most severe wave of infections so far, a senior paediatrician has said. Indonesia has been hit by a surge in cases this month, with new records on six days since 21 June including a daily high of over 21,807 today, putting pressure on the government to impose tighter measures. |

| UK Covid recovery at risk as furlough scheme phased out, say economists Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Business leaders also warn of renewed threat to jobs and growth as Delta variant drives up infections
Britain's economic recovery from Covid-19 is coming under pressure amid worker shortages and lengthier pandemic restrictions, as the Delta variant of coronavirus drives up infection rates. As the government begins to wind down the furlough scheme on Thursday – despite delaying its roadmap out of lockdown by four weeks until 19 July – the Guardian's monthly snapshot of economic developments suggests the pace of recovery has plateaued. | Wolfgang Tillmans on space, Brexit and Covid: ‘Let’s hope we get on a dancefloor soon’ Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:00 PM PDT From tiny weeds to distant galaxies, the photographer likes to scrutinise the interconnectedness of everything. He talks about coping with lockdown – and living through his second pandemic Wolfgang Tillmans and I talk on the phone on 23 June, which he calls the "fifth anniversary horribilis", referring to the Brexit vote. He's at home in Berlin: a day later, he will travel to the UK to install his new exhibition, Moon in Earthlight, in the seaside town of Hove. To conform to Covid protocols, he'll be doing it on his own, without his usual assistants, carefully placing his photographic images around the space – a former Regency flat owned by his gallerist Maureen Paley. These photographs range from an image of wet concrete pouring out of a nozzle to one of a root's tendrils creeping along a gap in the pavement. They are presented in a variety of formats, from huge printouts suspended on bulldog clips to small photographs tacked to the wall. Like all his shows, Moon in Earthlight will serve as an installation in its own right, a manifestation of Tillmans' tender scrutiny of the universe. It also includes a collection of astronomical yearbooks dating back to 1978, when the artist was a stargazing 10-year-old. Continue reading... |

| ‘I felt betrayed’: how Covid research could help patients living with chronic fatigue syndrome Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT People with ME/CFS face debilitating symptoms but often feel dismissed by doctors. The focus on long Covid could help change that In the fall of 2016, Ashanti Daniel, a nurse in Beverly Hills, California, went to an infectious disease physician looking for answers about a weird illness she couldn't shake. After falling sick with a virus four months earlier, she still felt too tired to stand up in the shower. The appointment lasted five minutes, she said. The doctor didn't do a physical exam or check her vitals. His assessment: her illness was psychogenic, resulting from something psychological. Continue reading... |

Sir Michael Marmot revealed the coronavirus death rate in Greater Manchester was 25% higher than the England average during the year to March, leading to "jaw-dropping" falls in life expectancy and widening social and health inequalities across the region over the past year. | ‘I refuse to visit his grave’: the trauma of mothers caught in Israel-Gaza conflict Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:00 PM PDT Many women have lost children, been separated from newborns or are unable to breastfeed and bond with their babies because of the war In the last month of her pregnancy, May al-Masri was preparing dinner when a rocket landed outside her home in northern Gaza, killing her one-year-old son, Yasser. Masri had felt the explosion's shockwave when the attack happened last month, but was largely unharmed. Running outside once the air had cleared, she found her husband severely wounded and her child's body covered in blood. Continue reading... |
| WITCH: We Intend to Cause Havoc review – the forgotten history of Zamrock Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:00 AM PDT Film-maker Gio Arlotta and two young musicians are on a quest to track down the legendary leader of a 1970s Zambian rock band Who knew 1970s Zambia had its own thriving musical genre? This modest documentary revisits the brief, almost-forgotten history of "Zamrock" – or at least what remains of it, which appears to be very little beyond the back catalogue of its leading band, Witch. Witch's rhythmic blend of British blues, funk, psychedelic and garage rock has aged very well, and reissues of their albums in the 2010s found a new audience, including Italian film-maker Gio Arlotta, who consequently undertook an expedition to Zambia to try to find the band, accompanied by two young Dutch musicians, Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskovic. There's now a well-trodden route for such musical travelogues, laid down by the likes of Buena Vista Social Club and Searching for Sugar Man, and while this lacks the polish or drama of either of those, it's an engaging and uplifting journey. One of the problems it runs into is a lack of surviving footage of Witch in action. Arlotta and co scour Zambia's pre-digital archives, but the best they come up with is some unseen footage of James Brown. Nor does it help that most of Witch's original lineup are dead. | How bad is the rise in US homicides? Factchecking the ‘crime wave’ narrative police are pushing Posted: 30 Jun 2021 03:00 AM PDT Homicides were up across the US in 2020 and appeared to be primarily driven by rising gun violence, but other crimes fell There's been a wave of media coverage this summer about an increase in homicides across the United States, with attention often focused on the same political question: will Americans still want to defund or even reform the police if "violent crime" is on the rise? Anxiety about violent crime is often used to win elections. Police and politicians routinely share misleading, out-of-context crime statistics to advance their agendas. Fearmongering about rising crime has also been used for decades to undermine Black Americans' protests for civil rights. So it's important to ask: is this homicide increase actually significant? And how much evidence is there for any of the explanations about why killings are going up? Continue reading... |
| Fears for Chilean indigenous leader’s safety after police shooting Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:52 AM PDT Alberto Curamil, an award-winning environmental activist, was seriously injured during a protest against the burning of a Mapuche home Former recipients of a prestigious environmental award, together with Amnesty International and the lawyer of indigenous land rights defender Alberto Curamil, have launched an appeal for Curamil's safety after he was seriously injured in a shooting by police. Curamil, an indigenous Mapuche leader who in 2019 won the Goldman Environmental Prize (GEP), also known as the "green Nobel", was left with 18 riot shotgun pellets embedded in his body after police chased his truck and opened fire after a protest against an arson attack on a Mapuche home on contested land in southern Chile. | Honduran state responsible for trans woman’s murder – court Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:47 AM PDT Landmark ruling orders state to pay reparations, protect trans people and legalise gender change In a landmark ruling for transgender rights, the Honduras government has been found responsible for the 2009 murder of the trans woman and activist Vicky Hernández. The ruling, at the inter-American court of human rights, was published on the 12th anniversary of Hernández's death, and marks the first time the highest regional human rights court has held a state accountable for failing to prevent, investigate and prosecute the death of a trans person. The court has ordered Honduras, which has the world's highest rate of murders of trans people, to pay reparations to Hernández's family and implement a sweeping range of measures designed to protect trans people, including anti-discrimination training for security forces and state collection of data on violence against LGBTQ+ people. | Canada has lost its halo: we must confront our Indigenous genocide | Tara Sutton Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:00 AM PDT Hundreds of unmarked graves, and testimonies of countless horrors, belie our angelic self-image It's not often that Canadians have to apologise for their country. I've travelled the world reporting on conflict and human rights and am always greeted positively when I say I'm Canadian. "It is a beautiful country," I am told. "Your country cares for its citizens." In Canada, people make sympathetic noises when I retell whatever tragic story I have been working on. "We are so lucky to live in Canada," they say. Canadians like the idea of a "good" country full of "good" people. There's even a name for it: "the angel complex". Look at all the immigrants and refugees we welcome here, goes the doctrine – we're not like those American racists, or those European xenophobes. Canada see itself as proudly multicultural, tolerant, peace-loving and polite. A beacon of light to the world. Continue reading... |
| Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:47 PM PDT My old high school in Christchurch has had the guts to listen to the reality that too many of us have girlhood stories of being groped, objectified or worse I was at Christchurch girls' high in the 90s. I still remember arriving in chemistry class at the start of a new year, and news getting round about a summer rape. No one would probe, but everyone knew, and there was a silent acknowledgement amongst my peers that it could have been any of us. In the years since, it seems like little has changed. It was unsurprising when a survey released this week found 20 young women at the school alleging they had been raped, and more than half saying they had been sexually harassed, many multiple times. For almost all of them, these violations happen before they turn 17. Continue reading... |

| Sturgeon admits link between Euro fans travelling and rise in Covid cases – video Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:45 AM PDT The Scottish first minister has said she thinks there is a link between Scotland fans travelling for Euro 2020 games and the rise in Covid cases in Scotland. Asked if the Scottish government should have done more to stop fans travelling to matches, Sturgeon denied taking a soft approach. She added the government could not stop fans without tickets travelling to Wembley. Public Health Scotland will be doing more analysis of this, she said |
| Jacob Zuma sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court – video Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:15 AM PDT The former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court after he failed to appear before a corruption inquiry earlier this year. The inquiry is examining allegations of high-level graft during Zuma's period in power.
