| Israeli opposition leader tells president he can form government Posted: 02 Jun 2021 01:31 PM PDT Under terms of Yair Lapid's proposed deal, far-right politician Naftali Bennett would replace Benjamin Netanyahu as PM Profile: Israel's far-right prime minister in waiting The Israeli opposition leader has told the country's president that he can form a government, a critical step that places Benjamin Netanyahu in his most precarious political position for more than a decade. After days of frenetic negotiations, Yair Lapid told President Reuven Rivlin less than an hour before a midnight deadline that he had the support of a majority of opposition parties for what has been called a "government of change" – a mix of bitter ideological rivals united by a shared desire to oust Israel's longest-serving leader. | Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to build new kind of nuclear reactor in Wyoming Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:20 PM PDT The project in Wyoming – the country's top coal-producing state – is a small advanced reactor that runs on different fuels to traditional ones Power companies run by billionaire friends Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have chosen Wyoming to launch the first Natrium nuclear reactor project on the site of a retiring coal plant. TerraPower, founded by Gates about 15 years ago, and power company PacifiCorp, owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, said on Wednesday that the exact site of the Natrium reactor demonstration plant was expected to be announced by the end of the year. | ‘Mourn June 4 in your own way’: Tiananmen Square events vanish amid crackdowns and Covid Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:35 PM PDT Hong Kong, Macau and China ban gatherings, and Taiwan has a serious Covid outbreak, leaving people to remember the massacre alone or online For the first time since the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, there will be no formal commemoration event held in the Chinese-speaking world for the anniversary. Thirty-two years after soldiers crushed student protests in Beijing and killed anywhere from several hundred to several thousand people, a combination of censorship, government crackdowns on criticism and pandemic restrictions will ensure no physical gathering is allowed in the People's Republic of China (PRC), Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan. | ‘It’s dehumanizing’: Texas valedictorian goes off script to attack abortion ban Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:45 PM PDT Paxton Smith criticizes near-total ban that makes no exception for rape or incest The valedictorian at a Texas high school went off script while delivering her graduation speech, criticising the state's extreme abortion ban in an address that has since been widely shared on social media. School administrators had signed off on Paxton Smith's pre-written speech on how TV and media have shaped her worldview. But, when it came time to address the graduating class of Lake Highlands high school, she pivoted. Continue reading... |
| Nasa plans return to Venus with two missions by 2030 Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:29 PM PDT Nasa sets aside $1bn for two ventures, which will be first US exploration of the planet since 1989 Nasa is returning to Venus for the first time in more than three decades to gain a better understanding of the history of what scientists believe could have been the first habitable planet in the solar system. Plans for two separate and ambitious deep space missions to Earth's nearest neighbour were announced on Wednesday by the head of the US space agency, Bill Nelson. Launches were targeted for a 2028-2030 time frame, he said. Continue reading... |
| ‘Mind-blowing’: tenth of world’s giant sequoias may have been destroyed by a single fire Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Draft report by National Park Service scientists finds 2020 Castle fire decimated California's population of ancient trees A massive fire in California last year may have destroyed up to a tenth of the world's mature giant sequoia population, according to a draft report produced by scientists working for the National Park Service. From August to December 2020, the Castle fire tore through Sequoia national park, burning through thousands of the ancient redwoods, the world's largest tree. By the time the blaze was contained, it had consumed 175,000 acres of parkland. NPS scientists now estimate that between 7,500 and 10,000 mature giant sequoias went up in flames. | World must rewild on massive scale to heal nature and climate, says UN Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:00 AM PDT The 'decade on ecosystem restoration' launches with a call for 'imagination' and action on never-before-seen scale The world must rewild and restore an area the size of China to meet commitments on nature and the climate, says the UN, and the revival of ecosystems must be met with all the ambition of the space race. Existing conservation efforts are insufficient to prevent widespread biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, the global body has warned at the launch of the decade on ecosystem restoration, an urgent call for the large-scale revival of nature in farmlands, forests and other ecosystems. | Sri Lankan officials brace for oil spill from sinking cargo ship Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:35 AM PDT Concern grows as photos show green film in ocean surrounding chemical-laden vessel Sri Lanka is readying for the possibility of an oil spill after a cargo ship laden with chemicals sank off its western coast. The Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl, carrying 1,486 containers, including 25 tonnes of nitric acid along with other chemicals and cosmetics, was anchored off the port city of Negombo when a fire erupted onboard after an explosion on 20 May. | Apple uses more suppliers from China than Taiwan for first time, data shows Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:54 PM PDT The tech giant has become more, not less, dependent on the US's superpower rival in recent years, according to analysis Apple used more suppliers from China last year than it did from Taiwan for the first time, highlighting the difficulty the United States government will have in persuading companies to become less reliant on its superpower rival. Despite Donald Trump's trade war against China, the tech company had 51 suppliers based in China and Hong Kong in 2020, according to a Nikkei Asia analysis of the annual Apple supplier list released last week. | David Beckham buys stake in vehicle electrification firm Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:01 PM PDT Lunaz specialises in classic cars but is set to start conversion of bin lorries to help transition away from fossil fuel Snaps of David Beckham in expensive cars were a tabloid staple during the footballer's days as a star player, but now his interest has taken a surprising turn: bin lorries. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has taken a 10% stake in Lunaz, a Silverstone-based company that electrifies classic cars from Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Range Rover. Now it hopes to take the same engineering logic and apply it to refuse trucks and other specialist commercial vehicles, giving them a new lease of life in the transition away from fossil fuels. | Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:57 AM PDT Hong Kong opens up vaccines to children over 12; Bulgaria says it has secured enough doses to share; Brazilian street protests erupt as Bolsonaro addresses nation
Regular readers of this blog will know that I usually slightly raise one eyebrow when reporting the official numbers out of Russia as they are remarkably consistent. They've pretty much been in the range of 7,000 to 9,500 daily every day since early March, which feels unusual as it suggest the virus is neither gathering pace or diminishing, which tends not to be how epidemics behave. Today is no different, as Russia reported 8,933 new cases taking the official national tally since the pandemic began to 5,099,182.
My colleague Nicola Slawson has just opened up the UK live blog for the day – so if you are looking for UK Covid news, that's where you need to head. I'll be continuing here with global updates. | Ireland: life under one of the harshest lockdowns in the world Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:00 PM PDT 'The mood was edgy, even a little paranoid …' As Ireland moves out of lockdown, our writer recounts what it's been like over the past year 'Are you over from England?" Just five words. A simple enough question. Yet delivered by a supermarket manager in a small town in County Kerry last year, shortly after Ireland had been forced into the first of its many lockdowns, the innocent question seemed to take on a new dimension. People had been ordered to stay within 2km of their homes, but there were rumours that rogue elements, in these early disbelieving days of the pandemic, had ignored the restrictions and were continuing to travel. There was talk of holiday homes being occupied, of visitors arriving from elsewhere in Ireland – and across the sea from Britain. Continue reading... |
| The empty office: what we lose when we work from home Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT For decades, anthropologists have been telling us that it's often the informal, unplanned interactions and rituals that matter most in any work environment. So how much are we missing by giving them up? In the summer of 2020, Daniel Beunza, a voluble Spanish social scientist who taught at Cass business school in London, organised a stream of video calls with a dozen senior bankers in the US and Europe. Beunza wanted to know how they had run a trading desk while working from home. Did finance require flesh-and-blood humans? Beunza had studied bank trading floors for two decades, and had noticed a paradox. Digital technologies had entered finance in the late 20th century, pushing markets into cyberspace and enabling most financial work to be done outside the office – in theory. "For $1,400 a month you can have the [Bloomberg] machine at home. You can have the best information, all the data at your disposal," Beunza was told in 2000 by the head of one Wall Street trading desk, whom he called "Bob". But the digital revolution had not caused banks' offices and trading rooms to disappear. "The tendency is the reverse," Bob said. "Banks are building bigger and bigger trading rooms." | Joan Allen: ‘Acting’s like tennis. You bring your game’ Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Adulterous housewives, CIA bosses – Joan Allen has played them all with consummate skill. Now, in Stephen King adaptation Lisey's Story, she's turned her hand to visceral horror In some ways, Joan Allen is like an American Gary Oldman; wait, stay with it. She looks so different from one role to the next that she's way beyond mercurial, further towards intangible – like a spirit slipping into a role more than a flesh-and-blood actor. Or maybe this is just acting at its most rarefied. One of the late 70s founders of Steppenwolf, the legendary Chicago theatre troupe that most famously launched John Malkovich, her early career was edgy, ensemble work, with an activist's purity of purpose. "We'd have to write these applications to get arts grants, and people would say 'What is your mission statement?'," she remembers as she Zooms from Connecticut. "Well, what were we? A group of like-minded people who wanted to do strong visceral theatre and had a similar sensibility and sense of humour. We saw the pinnacle of our job as to tell whatever story we were telling to the best of our ability." This was married, certainly in Allen's mind, with a craftsmanlike lack of pretension. "It's like tennis. You come in, and you bring your game. The better you play, the better your partner plays, the better your opponent plays." Although Steppenwolf were multi-award-winning and there was no shortage of mainstream theatre success – Allen won a Tony in 1988 for Burn This, in her Broadway debut – you can still get a whiff of how uncomfortable the ensemble was with the idea of Hollywood, especially as Malkovich's star started to rise. "At that time, there really was a concern, if we do go out and do other work, will this still be the most important thing in our lives? Is it more important to stay in Chicago and do it for local audiences?" Continue reading... |
| ‘A question of dignity’: the pathologist identifying migrants drowned in the Med Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Dr Cristina Catteneo made it her mission to put a name to each man, woman and child found in the overcrowded hulls of sunken boats bound for Europe At a glance, Dr Cristina Cattaneo assessed the lifeless body on the floor of an abandoned Sicilian hospital – a thin, young Eritrean refugee about 180cm tall. While most of the corpse was intact, his face and hands were skeletonised, probably the work of sea animals. It was the morning of 3 July 2015, and this was the first body to be recovered by a navy robot after a shipwreck on 18 April that year, which left more than 1,000 people dead. Continue reading... |
| The supersense secret: Steve Biddulph on how to become healthier, happier and more fully human Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:00 AM PDT The psychologist and author believes we are tapping into only a small corner of our potential. In his latest book, he explains how to harness all our senses and gut instincts Steve Biddulph is telling me about a patient who came to him after a life-changing incident in a car park. The woman, Andie, was getting into her car when she noticed a figure in the distance moving towards her. The young man looked nice, well dressed. He called to her, but she couldn't make out his words. Andie's stomach twinged. She had been raised to be polite and helpful, but the knot in her stomach tightened. She shut the car door and drove away. Later, she learned that the next woman to enter that quiet car park was brutally attacked. Biddulph is a psychologist, known for his bestselling parenting books Raising Boys and Raising Girls. In his latest book, though, he has turned his attention to the human race in general and, in particular, to the tiny clench in Andie's stomach that overrode her conditioning and gave her the right answer. Fully Human is a paean to what Biddulph calls "supersense": the ability of our bodies to make our deepest feelings known to us – and of our brains to process these twinges and flutters into a simple "yes" or "no". | Mohamed Bourouissa on France’s identity crisis: ‘We’ve got catching up to do!’ Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:00 AM PDT The French Algerian artist uses photography, rap music and the frequencies of trees in his quest to shine a light on marginalised communities. Now he's preparing for his first solo UK show In early 2020, when Dave was making British history by triumphing at both the Brits and Mercury music prizes, the equivalent awards in France were making headlines for all the wrong reasons. That year's Victoires de la Musique featured no headline prizes for a black or Arab rapper. "Domestic rap has become the soundtrack to a national identity crisis," claimed one critic in this newspaper. Where the UK rapper was crowned for his celebration of black Britishness, French hip-hop was still fighting for the right to be seen as French at all. It is a crisis that rising contemporary art star Mohamed Bourouissa knows from the inside. As he drily puts it: "France has got some catching up to do." Continue reading... |
| ‘I promised Brando I would not touch his Oscar’: the secret life of Sacheen Littlefeather Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT In 1973, she made history at the Academy Awards, appearing in place of Marlon Brando, declining his statuette and making a speech about Native American rights. She has been speaking out ever since Sacheen Littlefeather begins by announcing that this will be one of her last interviews: "I'm very, very ill. I have metastasised breast cancer – terminal – to my right lung. And I've been on chemotherapy for quite some time, and daily antibiotics. As a result, my memory is not as good as it used to be … I'm very tired all the time because cancer is a full-time job: the CT scans, MRIs, laboratory blood work, medical visits, chemotherapy, infectious disease control doctors, etc, etc. If you're lazy, you need not apply for cancer." For the next couple of hours, speaking over Zoom from her home in northern California, as she trips down memory lane her solemn demeanour gives way to chattiness and laughter. At 74, she has lived a full, eventful life, though she will be for ever remembered for an event that took up little more than one minute of it, on the night of 27 March 1973. This was when she took the stage at the 45th Academy Awards to speak on behalf of Marlon Brando, who had been awarded best actor for his performance in The Godfather. It is still a striking scene to watch. Amid the gaudy 70s evening wear, 26-year-old Littlefeather's tasselled buckskin dress, moccasins, long, straight black hair and handsome face set in an expression of almost sorrowful composure, make a jarring contrast. | Pelosi faces pressure to seize reins in investigating US Capitol attack Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:00 AM PDT A select committee could break logjam as Democrats try to press ahead with an investigation in what could be the last opportunity to hold Trump accountable Top Democrats are making a renewed effort to press ahead with establishing a sweeping, central investigation into the 6 January attack on the Capitol in what could be the final opportunity to hold former US president Donald Trump to account for inciting insurrection. The move reflects the resolve of the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to pursue a comprehensive inquiry even without bipartisan support, after Senate Republicans, fearful of what a full accounting of the violence might uncover, last week voted down legislation for a 9/11-style commission to scrutinize the attack by a pro-Trump mob. | ‘Worse day by day’: journalists speak out after Pakistani vlogger tortured Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:41 AM PDT As Imran Khan's government moves to outlaw virtually any criticism, media figures fear 'darkest era' of press freedom Gathered before a solemn crowd, Hamid Mir, one of Pakistan's best-known journalists, spoke defiantly. "Do not ever enter the homes of journalists again," he said. "We don't have tanks or guns like you, but we can tell the people of Pakistan about the stories that emerge from inside your homes." Mir may have been addressing journalists in Islamabad on Friday, but his words were not directed at them; they were a clear message to Pakistan's all-powerful military establishment. | How the Covid shock has radicalised generation Z Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT Analysis: young people's testimonies show they are ready to draw systemic conclusions from the handling of the pandemic by political elites
They have been tested, examined, judged and graded since childhood; told they must excel, compete and succeed. But thanks to Covid-19, across Europe a generation of school and college leavers face a bleak present and an uncertain future. When the Guardian asked Europeans in their late teens and early 20s how the pandemic has made them feel, you might have expected an outpouring of frustration: over jobs lost, friendships forcibly attenuated, dates cancelled. What arrived was a critique of capitalism. Continue reading... |
| 'A war on my body': Texas valedictorian goes off script over new abortion law – video Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:32 AM PDT On the day of her graduation, the Texas valedictorian Paxton Smith threw out her pre-approved speech and decided to use her platform to condemn the new extreme abortion ban in the state. When addressing the graduating class of Lake Highlands high school, Smith criticised the 'heartbeat bill', a law passed by the state's governor, Greg Abbott, in May that prohibits abortions after six weeks, when most people do not know they are pregnant. The near-total ban makes no exception, even in the case of rape or incest. 'I am terrified that if I am raped, then my hopes and aspirations and dreams and efforts for my future will no longer matter,' Smith said. Continue reading... |
