| Posted: 11 Nov 2020 02:49 AM PST Russia reports record high of 432 new deaths; governments race to secure vaccine doses; US sees record hospitalisations
France is doubling the number of intensive care (ICU) beds to cope with the second wave of Covid-19 patients. Before the first wave in March/April, France was estimated to have an intensive care capacity of around 5,000 ICU beds.
Ian Jones, professor of virology at the University of Reading, has cautiously welcomed news of the Russian Sputnik vaccine. He said: The Sputnik data is yet more good news for Covid-19 vaccine development. Although based on fewer cases than the recent Pfizer data, the vaccine looks as efficient and, like the Pfizer data, confirms and extends the earlier phase 2 results. We still need to know about the longevity of the response and the efficiency in different age groups, but the result bodes well for the other trials currently in progress and for having enough vaccine in geographically diverse regions to enable a comprehensive vaccination program on a global scale." | Spanish statue bodge-up is a new rival to Borja's Monkey Christ Posted: 10 Nov 2020 09:26 AM PST Trump-like visage grafted on to a carving in Palencia recalls earlier inept restoration In the footsteps of the unintentionally iconic Monkey Christ, the Tintin St George, the near-fluorescent Virgin and Child– not to mention the less than sinlessly executed Immaculate Conception – comes … well, it's hard to say. The latest Spanish restoration effort to provoke anguished headlines and much social media snarking is, or rather, was, a carved figure adorning an ornate, early 20th-century building in the north-western city of Palencia. | Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine poses global logistics challenge Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:45 AM PST Europe and US create vast facilities for Covid-19 vaccine but poorer nations lack infrastructure, say experts Two vast football-pitch-sized facilities equipped with hundreds of large freezers in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Puurs, Belgium, will be the centres of the huge effort to ship the coronavirus vaccine, developed by US drug giant Pfizer and German biotech firm BioNTech, around the world. Governments are scrambling to prepare for the rollout of the vaccine, which must be stored at -70C (-94F), after the announcement from the two companies that it was more than 90% effective and had no serious side-effects. | Covid: Totnes concerns reflect UK-wide rise in conspiracy theories Posted: 11 Nov 2020 01:57 AM PST Suspicion in Devon town of face masks and 5G means take-up of vaccine may face resistance Like many people living in or around Totnes in Devon, David, who is in his 70s, has his own theories about coronavirus and its origins. Sitting in the armchair of his house, he says the pandemic is a secret plot to impose a totalitarian world government and a nefarious effort to crush freedom. He scrolls through Facebook, which he recently signed up to, to show many with similar beliefs. David came to many of these ideas recently. When the pandemic hit, he started looking for answers. "I'm friends with a few people who are active in researching what is going on. I quickly made contact with others putting posts on the internet." Continue reading... |
| Joan Armatrading: 'I want to make a heavy metal album – with lots of guitar shredding' Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST At the age of seven, she flew to Birmingham from Antigua on her own – and became the first globally successful British female singer-songwriter. As she wins the award she once gave to Margaret Thatcher, Joan Armatrading looks back 'It's very nice to be honoured," says Joan Armatrading, down the phone from her home in Surrey. The 69-year-old is talking about receiving this year's Women of the Year lifetime achievement award, which sees her honoured alongside the likes of child burns survivor Sylvia Mac and Adwoa Dickson, who set up a community choir for young women who survived trafficking. "Whether I measure up is another question." She's joking, of course, but what does the continued existence of the award tell us about where the struggle for equality is in 2020? "It's maybe not as relevant as it was in 1955," she says, "when Tony Lothian set it up after being denied admission to a men-only meeting. But women are still doing incredible things in this society, so reward them." Continue reading... |
| Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST The coronavirus pandemic has left us living more and more of our lives online. But the place where we chat with friends, get our news and form our opinions is full of vile and dangerous conspiracy theories. Is the world's biggest social network doing enough to combat them? As with many others in Britain, lockdown hit Rachel and her husband, Philip, hard. Almost overnight, the couple, both in their early 50s, found themselves cut off from friends, family and colleagues. Before the Covid-19 outbreak, they had both been working every day; now Philip found himself furloughed, while Rachel was put on rotation with other essential staff, working fewer shifts at odd hours. They were unable to meet up with their four adult sons and daughters. They had to attend a family funeral while remaining socially distanced. Initially, Rachel coped in the way many others did. She played more video games than normal, and felt stressed at work, but as far as possible she managed. Her husband didn't. For him, it seemed there must be more to it than the authorities struggling to cope with a novel virus and evolving expert advice. "The regularly changing and conflicting information that was coming from the government added to the feeling in him that they were making things up or covering something up," Rachel says now. | 'She made music jump into 3D': Wendy Carlos, the reclusive synth genius Posted: 11 Nov 2020 12:13 AM PST She went platinum by plugging Bach into 20th-century machines, and was soon working with Stanley Kubrick. But prejudice around her gender transition pushed Wendy Carlos out of sight This summer, an 80-year-old synthesiser pioneer suddenly appeared online. She had been silent for 11 years, but now something had appeared that she just wouldn't tolerate. "Please be aware there's a purported 'biography' on me just released," wrote Wendy Carlos on the homepage of her 16-bit-friendly website, a Siamese cat and a synthesiser behind her portrait. "No one ever interviewed me [for it], nor anyone I know," she went on. "Aren't there new, more interesting targets?" Given that Carlos is arguably the most important living figure in the history of electronic music, it's remarkable that Amanda Sewell's Wendy Carlos: A Biography is the first book about her. This is the musician who pushed Robert Moog to perfect his first analogue synthesiser, from which pop, prog, electronica and film music flourished. Her smash-hit 1968 album Switched-On Bach made the Moog internationally famous and became the second classical album ever to go platinum in the US. Then came her extraordinary soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Tron. She made an ambient album five years before Brian Eno did, and jumped from analogue machines to do leading work in digital synthesis, but worried that her status as one of the first visible transgender artists in the US would overshadow it. | US election 2020: Biden says denying result 'will not help Trump's legacy' – live updates Posted: 11 Nov 2020 02:48 AM PST
We asked readers how they felt about Joe Biden's victory over Donald Trump – and today we've published what eight of them told us. Here's what Matthew, a teacher in Minnesota, said: Though I was aggrieved that Biden emerged above more progressive candidates, I nonetheless have always admired his empathy and forthright approach to politics. As the months passed between March and November, I realized that he was precisely the sort of person who is needed at this point in the nation's history, who can speak plainly and warmly, without self-aggrandizement or deliberate obfuscation. I am extremely concerned with the lingering resentment and sense of isolation felt by supporters of the current president, a sentiment which has erupted into violence before and may do again, as people appear to believe that anything other than laissez-faire policies and total dedication to the police is sufficient cause for revolution. I worry also that the Democratic party, as currently led by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, will dive further rightwards in an attempt to appeal to the rightwing elements of this country, a move that will assuredly lead to fewer Democratic senators and members of Congress as well as a weakening of the current drive for broader progressive policies such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for all.
