Immunity to Covid-19 could be lost in months, UK study suggests Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:31 AM PDT Exclusive: King's College London team found steep drops in patients' antibody levels three months after infection People who have recovered from Covid-19 may lose their immunity to the disease within months, according to research suggesting the virus could reinfect people year after year, like common colds. In the first longitudinal study of its kind, scientists analysed the immune response of more than 90 patients and healthcare workers at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS foundation trust and found levels of antibodies that can destroy the virus peaked about three weeks after the onset of symptoms then swiftly declined. 'It takes a toll': researchers struggle with lockdown cull of lab mice Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT Coronavirus restrictions on research made colonies of rodents surplus to requirements, leading to an 'emotionally overwhelming' mass killing Xiao-Tong Su, a postdoctoral fellow researching hypertension at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) apologizes to mice when she euthanizes them. "I try to think that they're sacrificed for human health and for science," she told me over the phone. As the owner of two pet rabbits, she had to switch to working with mice early in her career after repeatedly becoming too attached to rabbits she worked with. In the world of medical research, mouse and rat euthanasia are par for the course. Once an experiment is complete, mice are typically rendered extraneous since they can no longer be used as a control, and are humanely euthanized. Most universities abide by a reductionist policy, using as few mice as possible – so whenever possible, one mouse can be used for more than one study. Depending on their work, grad students and postdocs will euthanize one animal per day. "It never gets easier," Sayra Garcia, a second-year PhD student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said. Continue reading... |

Manchester City’s two-year Champions League ban lifted by Cas – live! Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:44 AM PDT
I'm not saying that Barney Ronay started it, but "RIP FFP" has been trending on Twitter since approximately 9.30am + 30 seconds. Lots of predictable rival club soreness, but in among it all plenty of concern over whether a surge in "financial doping" may be on the way, which could be particularly disastrous at a time when so many clubs below the very top of the game are feeling the coronavirus-related squeeze.

Palace letters to be released 45 years after Australian government sensationally dismissed Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:06 AM PDT 'Dramatic revelations' expected from 200 exchanges between the Queen, her private secretary and governor general The imminent release of secret royal correspondence linked to the dismissal of prime minister Gough Whitlam will again call the role of the monarchy in modern Australia into question, experts say. Australia's national archives will on Tuesday morning release the much-anticipated "palace letters", a series of more than 200 exchanges between the Queen, her private secretary, Martin Charteris, and Sir John Kerr, Australia's then-governor general, in the critical period leading up to Kerr's hugely controversial dismissal of Gough Whitlam's Labor government in November 1975. Markets strengthen amid economic recovery hopes - business live Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:48 AM PDT Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news
Britain's property sector emerged from its Covid-19 freeze in June, according to new data from property group Andrews. It has reported that instructions picked up last month (although they were still lower than a year ago). Viewings also increased sharply - with some people checking out properties remotely. Instructions in April and May 2020 were down 90% and 73% respectively on the equivalent months in 2019 as the property market felt the full impact of lockdown and Covid-19. But June 2020 saw a significant rebound, with instructions down just 26% on the corresponding month last year, up 178% on May 2020, when the property market reopened mid-month, and 624% on April — when Andrews saw just 55 instructions across its south of England branches.
The ONS has looked at how households were set-up to cope with a loss of income when lockdown hit. Using data from its wealth and assets survey, it found households where the head works in accommodation and food services were the least equipped to manage with a loss of income. Households where the head is employed in industries with lower rates of furloughing, such as IT and professional services, were more likely to be able to cover a drop in employment income with savings https://t.co/pU4AZWtGHw pic.twitter.com/0GF2lxTVz5 Continue reading... |

Naomi Klein: 'We must not return to the pre-Covid status quo, only worse' Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT What kind of world will the coronavirus crisis leave us with? Interviewed for a Guardian Live event, the activist and author insists that the climate, equality and fairness must be at the heart of the post-pandemic recovery Katharine Viner: Hello, Naomi. How are you finding lockdown? Naomi Klein: For those of us who were teaching our students by Zoom, as I was – home schooling, doing that juggle and figuring out how to bake – we had it really cushy. Now I am back in Canada for the summer with my family, in quarantine because in Canada, if you come from the US, you have to be in very strict quarantine. I have not left the house in almost two weeks. I am actually developing some phobias about leaving lockdown. Continue reading... |

The world needs grown-up leadership. Time for Germany to step up | Shada Islam Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:01 AM PDT With Germany at the EU helm, there's a unique chance for Europe to fill the vacuum left by the retreating US With Trump's US missing in action from the global stage, the European Union should be stepping into the vacuum. Germany, which has just taken over the bloc's rotating presidency, could use the next six months to provide the leadership to boost Europe's global impact. But is it ready to shake off its traditional reticence? Immediate economic challenges will dominate EU leaders' first in-person encounter since the lockdown, on 17 and 18 July. And Berlin is right to prioritise agreement on the EU's new seven-year budget and a pandemic recovery plan, a task complicated by internal rifts and new forecasts warning of an even deeper recession than expected across the 27-nation bloc. As Angela Merkel said in a recent Guardian interview: "For Europe to survive, its economy needs to survive." Continue reading... |

Covid-19 is no excuse for sovereign creditors to move the goalposts on debt Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT Vulture funds want to change Argentina's debt structure. We need to stop them from setting a dangerous precedent In the wake of Covid-19, there is an urgent need for sovereign debt restructuring, including debt relief. In the circumstances caused by the pandemic, many countries' repayment obligations could have devastating social consequences if they are not adjusted. Financial markets face risks of sovereign default. While some ad hoc relief has already been promised by official creditors, indebted poor countries are again facing private creditors without a sovereign-debt restructuring mechanism – the global equivalent of a bankruptcy regime. In the absence of such a framework, called for by the United Nations General Assembly and advocated by many experts and stakeholders, there have nevertheless been some constructive innovations in contractual approaches to sovereign debt. These address at least some of the collective-action problems of restructuring, including opportunistic holdout behaviour. Continue reading... |

Brutal deaths of exploited migrants shine a spotlight on Italy's farms Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:45 PM PDT Covid-19 exposed the country's reliance on 'invisible workers' enduring wretched conditions – and a new visa scheme has not addressed the problem Earlier this summer, as millions of Italians were locked down inside their homes, fruit and vegetables were left to rot in the fields despite the cost to the country's economy. Italy's informal refugee and migrant workforce, who had previously worked long hours in wretched conditions for paltry wages to bring produce off the fields, were absent from the farms. Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:30 AM PDT There are worrying trends about long-term damage, even in those with milder symptoms
There are a lot of unknowns about Covid-19. This makes sense, because despite six months of the most amazing scientific effort of our lifetimes, the coronavirus is a novel disease which means that we are constantly finding out new things about it. Even now, the debate about the most likely method of spread of the disease rages on, in part because the idea of masks has in many places become somehow a political decision rather than a scientific one. Sometimes 2020 feels like living in the Bad Place (but with less frozen yoghurt). Continue reading... |

Vietnam has recorded no official deaths related to the pandemic after a fast and proactive response Continue reading... |
