Pointing to the overhead netting covering her terrace, Kuljira Taechawattanawanna said: "We live in a cage but the monkeys live outside."

Deaths in Latin America pass 100,000; Fauci warns of 'disturbing' US cases surge; Brazil records 39,436 new cases; 200 cases at one South African school

Indonesian authorities complained on Wednesday that hundreds of people had refused testing for the new coronavirus as social taboos emerge as another obstacle to stopping its spread in the world*s fourth-most populous nation.

The country has the highest number of reported infections in Southeast Asia, surpassing 49,000, while at least 2,573 people have died, according to official data, the highest COVID-19 death toll in East Asia outside China.

Despite an acceleration in infections, this week hundreds of traditional traders in Bali and Sumatra refused to get tested, even as bustling, densely packed markets have emerged as common coronavirus infection points, officials said.

Ukraine is opening more of its hospitals to coronavirus cases as the ones initially chosen to accept patients no longer have enough beds to cope with a surge in infections, the health minister has said.

The daily rise of coronavirus cases hit a new high of 940 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 39,014, with 1,051 deaths. Most new cases were registered in west Ukraine and the capital.

Richard Dreyfuss: 'I was a bad guy for a number of years'

Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:00 PM PDT

His life has been a rollercoaster ever since Jaws. Richard Dreyfuss talks about Hollywood hell-raising, cocaine burnout, his flirting heyday – and his problems with #MeToo

"Don't shoot, I win Oscar." These words, says Richard Dreyfuss, are printed on the shirt he's wearing under his grey jacket. He is at home in San Diego, reclining in a voluminous brown leather armchair. Behind him is a picture of his wife, Svetlana, resting on a shelf beside his Bafta and David di Donatello awards. His Oscar he keeps inside his fridge ("I didn't want to brag, but I wanted everyone to know").

The strange story behind "Don't shoot, I win Oscar" will be told, but only after Dreyfuss asks Svetlana to do some Googling. "I think the best way to do it is Marlene Dietrich," he tells her. "Her first film. And then it'll show the name of the guy."

‘Go Ape gone Viking’ – Denmark’s newest treetop attraction

Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:30 PM PDT

In the Danish town that is home to Lego HQ, Wow Park is a forest wonderland of swings, ziplines and treehouses immersed in nature

The birdsong is louder 14 metres up and there's a citrusy tang of pine in the air. Scrambling to the top of a conifer with a six-year-old who suffers from vertigo wasn't top of my post-lockdown bucket list, but after staring at the same four walls for weeks on end, there's a welcome sense of perspective to spending time in a forest of 7,000 trees.

This is Wow Park in Billund, the Danish town that's the home of Lego HQ, and that calls itself the "Capital of Children" – with ambitions to become the most child-friendly place in the world to live and work. Billund's newest attraction is a treetop wonderland, the largest of its kind in the country, including suspension bridges, nets in the sky, giant bouncy balls, swings and ziplines; all crafted around the trunks of giant trees. It's like Go Ape gone Viking, with a rough and ready, hand-whittled feel.

UN chief urges Israel to back away from West Bank annexation

AntĂ³nio Guterres says plans to annex around 30% of the disputed territory would 'destabilise' the region

The United Nations secretary general, AntĂ³nio Guterres, has expressed hope that Israel will hear global calls and will not go ahead with annexation of parts of the West Bank, which would undermine a two-state solution to the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The UN has been consistently conveying the message "that annexation would be not only against international law but it would be a major factor to destabilise the region", he told Associated Press in an interview.

'My land is now owned by lions': Maasai farmers offer Kenya's wildlife a lifeline

Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Kenya has lost 70% of its wildlife in 30 years, but conservancy schemes could halt the decline – and benefit local communities

Parsaloi Kupai's home, situated on the edge of Ol Kinyei conservancy near the Maasai Mara game reserve, is no different from any other Maasai homestead – oval-shaped huts with an almost flat roof and walls plastered with a mixture of water, mud and cow dung. At the centre of the homestead is a cattle boma, an enclosure where his livestock spends the night, safe from the many predators that roam the area.

Kupai, 47, and his two wives chose to live here after they surrendered 69 hectares (170 acres) of land to the 7,500-hectare conservancy. He is among 240 landowners who gave up their highly valued grazing land for the project.

China's hidden partner in suppressing the Muslim Uighurs – the US | Sean R Roberts

Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:00 AM PDT

It's been revealed that Trump encouraged the mass internment of Uighurs. But the US complicity goes back to 9/11

Last week, President Trump signed the Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act, the first US legislation to focus on the role of the US in protecting the rights of Uighurs and other indigenous Muslims inside China. On the same day, former national security adviser John Bolton revealed in an excerpt from his book that Trump had allegedly told the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, perhaps as early as 2017 and again in 2019, that he agreed with his policy of placing Muslims in mass internment camps.

While contradictory messaging is not new to the Trump administration, these particular mixed messages about Uighurs have a longer history which belies the role that the US has played in stoking the flames of Islamophobia in China.

Trump is in a precarious position for re-election – but he still has a chance

Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:00 AM PDT

The numerous challenges of 2020 have hit Trump hard – but the conditions are ripe for a repeat surprise victory, some experts say

If Donald Trump wins the 2020 election and returns to the White House it won't be by a landslide. And if he's going to win at all he will need the US economy to rebound, to see suburban voters swing back in his direction, and overwhelm voters with a sense of optimism about another term under Trump.

That's the verdict of about a dozen Republican veteran political strategists and operatives spoken to by the Guardian. Those priorities underscore the precarious situation the US president finds himself in. Most national and statewide polls show the former vice-president Joe Biden leading Trump, often by comfortable margins.

Coronavirus in England: are cases falling or rising near you?

Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:39 AM PDT

How has Covid-19 progressed where you live?

The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight.
