Coronavirus live news: German infection rate back at 1.0; Turkey sends medical equipment to US

Germans told to stay home as much as possible; some New Zealanders going back to work; Trump renews attack on China over virus

The global economy is heading for what the International Monetary Fund believes is the worst recession since at least the Great Depression after the Wall Street crash of 1929. This is as a consequence of governments around the world attempting to suppress economic and social activity through lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Police in Ireland have launched a week-long sweep of patrols and checkpoints to deter people from travelling before and during the May bank holiday, writes Rory Carroll, the Guardian's Dublin correspondent.

More than 2,500 gardaí started deploying on Tuesday to enforce restrictions on movement amid growing public restlessness with the lockdown.

We need this compliance to continue. This is a critical week for the country. If we all work together, we can help save the lives of our family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Can Europe’s restaurants survive the coronavirus lockdown?

Chefs and owners fear bankruptcy as continent's gastronomic culture remains in limbo

If there is such a thing as a European way of life, restaurants like Föllerei in Berlin used to give a pretty good flavour of what it would taste like.

In a crammed 40 sq metre (430 sq ft) space tucked away in a side street of scruffy but fashionable Neukölln, the owner, Christiane Föll, has for the last 10 years served up sumptuous Franco-German cuisine, darting between 10 rickety wooden tables night after night to recommend the organic entrecôte, pour another glass of Spätburgunder or share the latest locally sourced gossip.

The power of pickles: a guide to preserving almost everything – from jam-making to chutneys

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:30 AM PDT

You don't need a glut of garden apples or courgettes to create mouth-watering preserves that will last you through the months ahead

More than any domestic appliance, preserving is the home cook's secret weapon. If you have a vegetable garden, fruit trees or an allotment, it is the age-old way of making the summer glut and autumn harvest last through the winter dearth when there is nothing to grow or pick. Even with year-round fresh produce in the shops, a gleaming row of gem-hued jars filled to the brim with crunch and spice can brighten up the most lacklustre meal.

The idea of making your own kimchi or bottling a batch of chutney might scare you off. But all you need is a few key ingredients and some patience. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Ramadan TV dramas signal shift in Arab-Israeli relations

Two popular Middle Eastern series stir surprise with pro-Israel messages backed by Saudi Arabia

Nightfall during Ramadan in the Middle East is drama time, when Arab soap operas accompany evening feasts with fare of feuds, historical heroes and villains and forbidden love. This year though, programmers have broached new ground using the popular shows to highlight a normalisation with Israel.

Two series broadcast across the region in the first three days of the Muslim holy month have stirred both surprise and contention – one by daring to explore the Jewish history of the Gulf, the other by suggesting that Israel may not be an enemy and that Palestinians have been ungrateful for Saudi Arabia's support.

African Americans bear the brunt of Covid-19's economic impact

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Pandemic spotlights racial disparities, with black workers expected to feature disproportionately in the 26m recent unemployment claims

Just two months ago in the Cabinet Room of the White House, sitting at a table surrounded by a handful of his black supporters, Donald Trump once again praised his job creation record. "Black people right now are having the best, statistically, the best numbers that you've ever had, and it's really an honor," he said. "Nobody has done more for black people than I have. Nobody has done more."

That was 27 February and Trump was also still claiming he had done an "incredible job" with the looming coronavirus pandemic. Now the virus has led 26 million Americans to file for unemployment. While the US Bureau of Labor Statistics will not release unemployment figures broken down by race until the beginning of next month, economists are certain that black Americans are suffering the brunt of Covid-19's economic impact and will probably suffer the most dramatic consequences of the looming recession.
