Over the weekend, major international talks on biodiversity loss that were set to take place in China were moved because of the coronavirus outbreak. The first round of negotiations for a Paris-style agreement on biodiversity, which had been due to take place in Kunming, Yunnan between 24 and 29 February, has been moved to Rome.
Sixty Italians evacuated from Wuhan arrived at a military base near Rome on Monday. A passenger who was expected to be on board the flight remained in Wuhan after contracting a fever, Italian media reported. The group will be quarantined for up to two weeks. Continue reading... |

Johnson says the UK is not going to insist that the EU follows all its rules. For instance, it won't insist that the EU follows UK rules on the use of single-use plastics. It won't ban German cars or Italian wine, unless those countries follow UK plastic rules.

They were part of one of the largest groups shut out of Monday's caucus: people with felony convictions. Iowans are barred from voting for life once they commit a felony, and people can't vote even if they committed a crime decades ago. The state's policy, one of the strictest in the country, means more than 42,000 Iowans out of prison won't have a say in choosing a presidential candidate. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has condemned yesterday's attack by Isis-inspired Sudesh Amman. Harun Khan, the MCB secretary general, said: Our thoughts are with the victims of the incident in Streatham, and our solidarity is with the people of that area. Streatham is a vibrant community where Muslims find common cause with fellow residents on a range of issues. Only recently, the people of Streatham came together to speak out against the vandalism against a local mosque. We must continue to celebrate this strong community spirit, whilst also remaining vigilant. Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of US politics on the day the Democratic primary race finally gets real. Tonight the midwestern state of Iowa will be the first to vote in the primary race, as Democratic voters begin the process of choosing a candidate to take on Donald Trump in November's general election. Voters have to go and stand in the area where their candidate is represented. So Joe Biden supporters would be in one corner, Elizabeth Warren's in another, and Bernie Sanders supporters in another. Everyone is tallied. For the Democratic caucuses, in particular, second choices are important. If a particular candidate does not attract 15% of total voters present, they are not seen as "viable" and are taken off the ballot, leaving their voters free to throw their weight behind another candidate. For example, a Pete Buttigieg supporter could sidle over to the Warren area. The WHO issued a statement welcoming the government's "commitment to transparency", and the WHO director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, tweeted: "China is actually setting a new standard for outbreak response." The WHO is ignoring Chinese government suppression of human rights regarding the outbreak, including severe restrictions on freedom of expression. In turn, Chinese state media are citing the WHO to defend its policies and try to silence criticism of its response to the outbreak, which has included rights violations that could make the situation worse. | Coronavirus: Raab confirms 11 more UK nationals being flown back from Wuhan - video Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST The UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, has confirmed 11 British nationals will be flown back from the Chinese city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday on a French-chartered plane after they missed a UK evacuation flight on Friday. Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Raab said the government was doing everything in its power to help Britons who wished to leave but that the process posed serious challenges. The UK government had been expecting 200 people would be on Friday's chartered flight, but when it left Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, only 83 Britons were onboard.
