| Coronavirus: first death outside China recorded as total fatalities pass 300 Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:50 PM PST Man from Wuhan has died in a Philippines hospital, says WHO, as Xi Jinping orders 1,400 more medical workers into Wuhan The Philippines has reported the first death from the coronavirus outside China, adding to fears about the spread of the virus as more countries imposed travel restrictions. The outbreak of the respiratory illness has killed 304 people in China since it was first detected in the central city of Wuhan late last year. Across China, there were 2,590 new confirmed infections on Saturday, bringing the total to 14,380, China's National Health Commission said on Sunday. A study published on Saturday by scientists from the University of Hong Kong found that the virus may have infected as many as 75,815 people in Wuhan. Continue reading... |
| Trump impeachment: Republican Senate 'coverup' prompts backlash Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:38 PM PST
Outraged by what they see as a coverup in the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, grassroots activists are planning a massive "payback project" designed to punish Republican senators at the ballot box. Related: By denying witnesses, Republicans made clear even a smoking gun would not be enough Continue reading... |
| Brexit day one: Johnson goes for broke with hardline trade deal Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:05 PM PST Prime minister pledges to make no concessions to EU as he salutes 'a turning point in the life of our nation' No sooner had the union jacks been lowered in Brussels and Strasbourg, after 47 years of tortured British membership, than Boris Johnson was preparing to launch the UK into yet another uncompromising battle with the remaining 27 nations of the European Union. The morning after he had finally achieved his goal of removing the UK from the European club, Downing Street released photographs of the prime minister triumphantly striking a gong on the stroke of 11pm (midnight Brussels time) as this country took its leave. The text from a short speech he made as the clock struck 11 was also released. Continue reading... |
| Australian Open men's singles final: Novak Djokovic v Dominic Thiem – live! Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:04 AM PST
Third set: Novak Djokovic 6-4 4-6 *1-5 Dominic Thiem: Well, that was easy. Dominic Thiem strolls to a love hold, sealed with a glorious backhand down the line. That shot was missing in action early on but now he can't stop landing them. One game away from a 2-1 sets lead.
Djokovic just had the trainer on for an unspecified reason. The commentators at Eurosport thought they heard something about Djokovic being "tired". Who knows? Continue reading... |

Hundreds of people packed a stadium on Saturday evening in Moshi town, near the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, and were crushed as they rushed to get anointed with "blessed oil". Continue reading... |
| Iraq protesters unconvinced after Mohammed Allawi named PM Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:36 PM PST Appointment welcomed by influential cleric but draws mixed response from demonstrators Iraq's president has named former communications minister Mohammed Allawi as the country's new prime minister after an 11th-hour consensus among political blocs, but the streets were ambivalent about his nomination. Baghdad and the mainly Shia south have been gripped by four months of anti-government rallies demanding snap elections, a politically independent prime minister and accountability for corruption and protest-related violence. | Tajikistan holds journalist on extremism charges Posted: 02 Feb 2020 02:55 AM PST Move fuels fears ex-Soviet republic is clamping down on dissent before parliamentary and presidential elections Tajikistan has said it is holding an independent journalist and government critic on extremism charges, fuelling concerns that the government of the ex-Soviet republic is cracking down on dissent before two sets of elections. | ‘I’ll destroy your family’: India’s activists tell of false arrest and torture in custody Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:05 AM PST Uttar Pradesh's leading protesters against new citizenship law believe they were rounded up to quell further dissent At 73 years old, Mohammad Shoaib had grown used to harassment from police. As one of India's highest-profile activists, he had made a name fighting for Muslims falsely accused of being terrorists by the police, earning him powerful enemies. But in late December, as he was brought into the police station in Lucknow, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, in the middle of the night, he felt something had shifted. "Police officers abused me badly while I was in their custody and they threatened me in many ways," he said. "One [senior officer] said to me at the police station: 'I will fuck your mother. I am going to throw all your family members in jail where they will rot for life. I will destroy your family'." Continue reading... |
| ‘I’m a stranger in my own city’: Prague takes on Airbnb to dam flood of tourists Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:04 AM PST Joining a battle already being waged by many other cities, the Czech capital's mayor wants new laws to limit the lettings website For decades, its mesmerising blend of baroque and gothic beauty was closed to mass tourism by the iron curtain that divided the communist east from the capitalist west during the cold war. Now Prague, which has gained an unenviable reputation as a destination for stag nights and pub crawls, has become the latest European city to propose a radical assault on Airbnb and other short-term letting platforms as over-tourism threatens to overwhelm it and drive out residents. | US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar: ‘I always stand up to bullies’ Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:00 AM PST Ilhan Omar became a national figure in 2018 as one of only two Muslim women ever elected to the US Congress. The Somali-born politician tells Rachel Cooke about growing up a refugee, being the focus for Republican rage – and standing up to Trump Longworth House, which stands just south of the Capitol in Washington DC, is one of three offices used by members of the House of Representatives. A vast neoclassical building, its corridors are austere, their anonymous expanses broken only by American flags and identical brass plates identifying which Congressman or woman may be found behind each door. Turning a corner, however, something else suddenly appears on the horizon: a multicoloured cloud of butterflies that turns out, on closer examination, to be a collection of hundreds of Post-It notes. "Thank you for being strong," says one. "You're the best of what America can be," says a second. A third, heart-shaped and embellished with a smiley face, announces simply: "You are home." Almost, but not entirely, obscured by this outpouring of love is another regulation brass plate. This one reads: Representative Ilhan Omar, Minnesota. Even by its own standards, the atmosphere in Washington this afternoon is febrile. Yesterday, the articles of impeachment against President Trump were finally brought from the House to the Senate. Meanwhile the two leading candidates on the left in the race to be the Democratic presidential candidate, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, had a very public falling out, the former having accused the latter of calling her a liar on live television. | ‘Put that light out,’ plead locals near Brighton’s stadium Posted: 02 Feb 2020 02:04 AM PST Football club's all-night glow is visible for miles … and keeps the birds awake Residents in a south coast beauty spot are taking action against their local football club, saying its efforts to keep the pitch in tip-top condition through the winter are harming the ecosytem. At Brighton and Hove Albion's Amex stadium, lights and under-soil heaters are left on all night to encourage the grass to grow, and the lights create a glow that campaigners claim can be seen for miles across the South Downs and the city of Brighton. | Bosphorus’s amateur ship spotters keep watch on global power struggle Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:42 AM PST They're up before dawn to track traffic on the busy strait – and their sightings of warships can help to predict Russian strategy. The Observer meets 'a nerdy little community' The Bosphorus, the magnificent strait dividing Istanbul in two, is named after Io, a mortal lover of the god Zeus, who was cursed by his wife Hera to wander the earth in the form of a white heifer: the name comes from the Greek boûs, cow, and poros, passage. Io may have been the first to cross the waterway dividing Europe from Asia, but she was certainly not the last. As the route from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, the Bosphorus offers enormous geopolitical power to whoever controls it. The city of Constantinople was founded on either side of its shores, successively the seat of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Today, the Bosphorus breathes calmly and quietly beneath the hills of modern Istanbul, but its waters are still full of international intrigue. Continue reading... |
| What we Palestinians think does not matter – all that matters is Israel | Diana Buttu Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:45 PM PST The message of Donald Trump's Middle East 'peace plan' is that international law can be bypassed Last week, an impeached US president revealed his plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace, with an indicted Israeli prime minister at his side. Yet far from being a "historic" peace plan, Donald Trump's initiative is merely the repackaging of ideas from previous failed negotiations, including from the days in which I served as a legal adviser to the Palestinian negotiating team. Then, as now, Israeli plans had the same aim: to confine as many Palestinians as possible on as little land as possible, while legalising Israel's illegal settlements and depriving Palestinians their guaranteed right to return to their homeland. This is not a plan for peace but a demand that Palestinians agree to their perpetual subjugation. Continue reading... |

| Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:46 AM PST The PM's lack of transparency in dealing with the troubled sports grants program deepens concerns about government accountability Standards, Scott Morrison told us on the Sunday afternoon before the opening of federal parliament for 2020, are about accountability. Except, self-evidently, when standards are not about accountability; when standards are actually about shifting the goalposts so you can get through the latest debacle. Continue reading... |
| Philippines races to trace those linked to first coronavirus death outside China Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:27 PM PST A 44-year-old man from Wuhan travelled with a 38-year-old woman through Hong Kong and three provinces before his death Officials in the Philippines are racing to identify people who had contact with a 44-year-old man who has become the first person to die from the new coronavirus outside China. The man, who was from Wuhan, the centre of the outbreak in China, had visited three provinces after arriving in the Philippines from Hong Kong. Continue reading... |
| Evangelicals see Trump as a way to get what they want after decades of defeat Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:53 AM PST Trump has handed his ultra-loyal evangelical base policy victories and in return they turn a blind eye to his scandals Joanne Craig, a lifelong evangelical Republican and resident of Sioux City, Iowa, couldn't be more satisfied with the first three years of Donald Trump's presidency. Donning a large, blue "Christians for Trump" button on a blue pantsuit, the 80-year-old Craig emerged from the Country Celebrations Event Center in this small Iowa city satisfied to have heard Mike Pence and a cadre of Baptist pastors coo about the president's policy victories.
