| Trump raises white flag as shutdown gambit fails gradually then suddenly Posted: 25 Jan 2019 02:26 PM PST Caught between the political savvy of Nancy Pelosi and the wrath of Ann Coulter the president secured not a penny for his wall Richard Nixon once said there can be no whitewash at the White House. But it would be fair to say there is now a white flag. It was metaphorically waved by Donald Trump in a chilly yet sunny Rose Garden on Friday when he declared an end to the partial government shutdown after 35 tortuous days. Continue reading... |

| Naomi Osaka v Petra Kvitova: Australian Open women's final – live! Posted: 26 Jan 2019 02:13 AM PST

Second set: Osaka 7-6, 4-3 *Kvitova (*denotes server) The Kvitova serve was a little better, moving 30-0 up but then just as she addressed that part of her game, the unforced errors creep back. At 30-30, she's a little lucky to win a point at the net, planting a shot straight at Osaka when she had most of the court to aim at. She then seals the game with a fine winner and celebrates on the baseline with a mixture of relief, elation and anger. Next game should be interesting.
Second set: Osaka* 7-6, 4-2 Kvitova (*denotes server) Kvitova had a glimmer of a chance there at 0-30 but her forehand fails her and Osaka draws level before two errors allow her to finish things off. That's four games on the spin for the 21-year-old as Kvitova had out herself in a fine position in the set. Continue reading... |
| Revealed: 'dozens' of girls subjected to breast-ironing in UK Posted: 25 Jan 2019 11:01 PM PST Perpetrators consider it a traditional measure to stop unwanted male attention An African practice of "ironing" a girl's chest with a hot stone to delay breast formation is spreading in the UK, with anecdotal evidence of dozens of recent cases, a Guardian investigation has established. Community workers in London, Yorkshire, Essex and the West Midlands have told the Guardian of cases in which pre-teen girls from the diaspora of several African countries are subjected to the painful, abusive and ultimately futile practice. The warning comes from the Cabinet Office, which is coordinating training for thousands of staff across Whitehall to help prepare departments for a disorderly departure from the European Union on 29 March. | Cat Person author Kristen Roupenian: 'Dating is caught up in ego, power and control' Posted: 26 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST Her short story was read by millions online – then things got weird. The writer talks about viral fame, power games and her new collection of twisted tales Kristen Roupenian's short story Cat Person was published by the New Yorker in December 2017 and, to the author's best recollection, it went up online on a Monday. The 37-year-old was living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while completing a fellowship in writing, and for three or four days after the story came out, enjoyed the world's customary reaction to most fiction, and all short stories – complete indifference – while basking in the achievement of it having been published at all. "I was thinking, 'Wow: that was the greatest thing to ever happen, and now it's over.'" She smiles. "Then it was Friday." By the standards of true global celebrity, there is only so far a piece of fiction can go; as David Foster Wallace used to say, the most famous writer in the world is about as famous as a local TV weatherman. Still, what happened with Cat Person remains singular to the extent that, for what seemed like the first time in publishing history, it slammed together two alien worlds, social media and serious fiction, in a way that stretched the boundaries of literary fame. | Roger Stone: a master of the political dirty trick Posted: 25 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST Beginning with Richard Nixon in the early 1970s, the former adviser for Donald Trump has made a career of ruthless campaigning The raid happened before dawn, a Swat team of heavily-armed FBI agents in camouflage uniforms rushing between Florida palm trees to confront their target. The spectacle was laden with melodrama, surprisingly so given who had ordered it: Robert Mueller, the special counsel in the Russia investigation who has turned understatement into an art form. | Does the Home Office really think the migration crisis is a laughing matter? | Rod Austin Posted: 25 Jan 2019 03:04 AM PST In a giggle-strewn radio interview, MP Victoria Atkins struggled to explain Britain's inaction over people arriving by boat When is a crisis not a crisis? Perhaps when no one takes it seriously. The minister for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability, Victoria Atkins, fumbled for words in an interview when asked to explain the Home Office's inability to tackle the rise in people using dinghies in an a bid to reach Britain from France. The lack of clarity in Atkins' response as to why border force boats were still in their respective ports three weeks after the crisis began was peppered with bouts of nervous laughter as she announced: "They are on their way!" | The joy that comes from embracing trans identity shouldn't be so rare | Andy Connor Posted: 25 Jan 2019 02:14 PM PST 'Gender euphoria' is a concept whose time has come, and at this year's Midsumma festival we got a chance to see it in full flight As the chorus of voices lifted in the final kaleidoscopic song of Gender Euphoria, the first mainstage all-transgender show in Australian history, something rare and vital was communicated. So many trans stories are tragedies; it's easy to miss the triumphs. So much of the world is still so stigmatising and cruel to trans people that it's easy to overlook the joy. More than just relief at having escaped something, the show tells us, being trans is also about having found something. "Goodbye gender dysphoria," proclaimed cabaret star Mama Alto, "Hello gender euphoria!" Related: Shantay, you play: the drag queens of gaming Continue reading... |

At least 50 people died in the disaster on Friday, Avimar de Melo, mayor of the nearby town of Brumadinho, told the Hoje em Dia newspaper.
