'White soccer teams don't pay upfront': how race unlevelled US playing fields

Posted: 04 Jun 2018 05:00 AM PDT

Wealthy, mostly white soccer clubs in the US have long snatched up the best pitches – but in liberal Seattle, one official is taking a stand

A few years ago, Exequiel Soltero wanted to rent two soccer fields in a well-to-do Seattle suburb. Finding places for his Latino immigrant soccer league to play matches had become quite a challenge: the area's soccer fields were always snatched up by wealthy, mostly white clubs who had the money and expertise to navigate the city's leasing process. It was a complaint he often heard from other clubs in Seattle's lower income communities.

They felt shut out.

Grenfell inquiry: survivors' opening statements begin - live updates

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:13 AM PDT

Opening statements continue, including one by the lawyer of Edward Daffarn, the tower resident who warned in 2016 that disaster would strike

Now we have Danny Friedman QC on behalf of bereaved, survivors, and relatives.

He begins with a damning indictment of how such an atrocity was allowed to happen.

The bereaved and surviving people of Grenfell Tower come to this Inquiry in a calm rage. The basic facts are stark. In the second decade of 21st century London, governed by a regulatory framework designed to ensure fire safety, a local authority instigated and oversaw the refurbishment of a social housing high rise tower block, in such a way as to render it a death trap.

RBKC and the TMO did this, and they did so using public funds, paid to an array of professionals, contractors and sub-contractors, none of whom have yet accepted any responsibility for their part in what happened. Residents – some of the people commemorated last fortnight, and some of the people sitting here today – told them this could happen. But they were fobbed off. Certainly not treated as equals; and denied access to the information that they could have used to save themselves; or to save others.

The counsel for the Metropolitan police says the force will shortly provide a statement detailing its response on the night of the fire.

Jeremy Johnson says the criminal investigation is proceeding in accordance with the timetable previously detailed.

It is anticipated that Grenfell Tower will be released as a crime scene in July or August this year.

The magnitude of the police investigation is unprecedented.

Niger Islamic State hostage: 'They want to kill foreign soldiers'

Guardian investigation sheds light on little known Isis-affiliated group that killed four US soldiers last year

When a team of American special forces hunting Islamic State fighters in Niger was ambushed and four of its soldiers killed, the attack last October was described as "a total tactical surprise" by the commander of US Africa Command.

Their deaths became a political scandal in Washington – where there was little awareness of US military operations in the region – and became notorious when Donald Trump, in a condolence call, told the widow of one of the dead soldiers that he "knew what he signed up for".

MPs raise concerns over UK aid funding Chinese film industry

Multi-million-pound prosperity fund does not focus on world's poorest and lacks transparency, says parliamentary committee

Aid delivered under multi-million-pound cross-government fund is insufficiently focused on poverty reduction and lacks transparency, MPs said.

The emphasis of the prosperity fund on promoting British trade was a "step towards" tied aid, a concept discredited after Britain's "aid for arms" scandal 25 years ago, according to a report on aid spending across Whitehall by the international development committee (IDC). The Pergau Dam affair, in which hundreds of millions of pounds in UK aid were linked to a major arms deal, was uncovered by a National Audit Office report in 1993.
