| Donald Trump at G7: 'US is not a piggy bank to be robbed' Posted: 09 Jun 2018 10:15 AM PDT US president appears to snub Theresa May and called for tariff-free trade with members In an unscheduled press conference hours before the G7 summit was due to end, Donald Trump accused the rest of the world of treating the US like a piggy bank to be robbed, appeared to snub Theresa May and called for tariff-free trade with the G7 countries. In a bravado performance, he also described Russia's annexation of Crimea as "something that happened a while ago", warned in the bluntest of terms against economic retaliation for the US's introduction of tariffs, and described the way the EU treated the US as brutal. | 'Australia doesn’t realise’: worsening drought pushes farmers to the brink Posted: 09 Jun 2018 03:00 PM PDT Liverpool plains farmer Megan Kuhn says cows are being slaughtered because there is no way of feeding them after years of extreme weather In the south-west corner of NSW's Liverpool plains, in an area called Bundella, farmer Megan Kuhn runs beef cattle and merino sheep with her husband, Martin. They have 400 breeding cows that will calve in six weeks. Shortly, 89 of those cows will leave the property, sold to an abattoir because the cost of feeding the animals during drought has become too great. Continue reading... |
| Taliban leaders declare Eid ceasefire with Afghan forces Posted: 09 Jun 2018 09:10 AM PDT Halt in hostilities coincides with government's own stand-down and is first in nearly 17 years but does not include foreign troops The Taliban on Saturday announced a surprise three-day ceasefire with the Afghan government for the duration of Eid al-Fitr, the religious holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. The halt in hostilities at the end of this week comes two days after the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, announced his government's unilateral eight-day ceasefire. It is the first time in nearly 17 years that the militants have declared a cessation of violence, albeit a limited one, since the government it ran was toppled by the 2001 US-led invasion. | Apple inches closer to $1tn mark as Wall Street tech panic dissipates Posted: 09 Jun 2018 04:00 AM PDT Tech's stock market dominance is no longer a Wall Street fear as Apple is close to becoming first company valued at $1tn Apple is just a couple of pips away from becoming the first company ever to be valued at $1tn, a symbolic threshold that further shows just how much tech companies have come to dominate the US stock market. On Friday, Apple was valued at over $940bn – "just" $60bn short of a figure no other listed company has ever achieved. It's not the only tech company nearing $1tn – Amazon is currently valued at over $820bn. Continue reading... |

| Underpaid and exhausted: the human cost of your Kindle Posted: 09 Jun 2018 02:11 PM PDT In the Chinese city of Hengyang, we find a fatigued, disposable workforce assembling gadgets for Amazon, owned by the world's richest man. Five o'clock in the morning and the young woman's eyelids are drooping. All night she has been removing spots of dust from Amazon smartspeakers with a toothbrush. Time seems to crawl. Now she is overwhelmed with exhaustion. She works on, more and more slowly, until she can do no more. She looks around the workshop. Other workers have rested their heads on the bench. She slumps forward and falls asleep. Continue reading... |
| Grenfell one year on: the citizen journalist and activist fighting for change Posted: 10 Jun 2018 01:30 AM PDT Faisal Metalsi runs Grenfell Speaks, a social media news channel, while Zeyad Cred organises monthly silent walks around the tower "I wanted us to control our own narrative," says Metalsi, a citizen journalist who single-handedly runs the social media news channel Grenfell Speaks. "That was the reason it started. A few days after the fire I was walking outside Rugby Portobello [a community centre close to Grenfell Tower] and there were camera crews everywhere. I remember thinking, how are these people going to portray my community? And is there something we can do to control that?" His answer took shape over the weeks that followed. Metalsi, who has a background in web development and branding, started posting footage of council meetings and community protests to Facebook and YouTube. Using his phone camera, he interviewed relatives of the victims, some of whom were speaking publicly for the first time, and talked to locals, celebrities and politicians about the events surrounding Grenfell. "In a nutshell," he says, "the channel is a way of telling community stories from the perspective of a member of the community." Continue reading... |
| Denmark swings right on immigration – and Muslims feel besieged Posted: 10 Jun 2018 02:00 AM PDT After a burqa ban, hardline rhetoric has entered the mainstream. In one coastal town, attitudes seem increasingly polarised "It's a lovely place," says Jens Kramer, as he gazes across the harbour from his seat outside the wooden shed that serves as Holbæk's boat club. "But I think people here are becoming more and more hostile to foreigners and I'm not proud of it. It's not the Holbæk I love." Kramer is not alone in thinking that the tone of Denmark's immigration debate has changed. In recent years, the rise of the rightwing anti-migrant Danish People's party has led to previously radical positions becoming mainstream. And the country's Muslim population in particular feels under siege. Earlier this month Danish MPs passed a law that, in effect, bans the burqa. It imposes a penalty of 10,000 kroner (£1,200) for repeat offenders. Continue reading... |
| UK accused of failing to pass on fears over Saudi Arabia arms deal Posted: 09 Jun 2018 10:00 PM PDT Government 'turning blind eye' to arms exports that are diverted to terrorists or criminals An arms sales watchdog has accused the UK government of a serious failure to disclose intelligence that could save the lives of thousands of people involved in ongoing global conflicts. The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (Birn) highlighted the dangers of the "diversion" of arms and ammunition legally supplied to Saudi Arabia but then passed on to third-party "proxy fighters" including terror groups, and said the practice was fuelling conflicts. | The Sunday Essay: how we all colluded in Fortress Europe | Kenan Malik Posted: 09 Jun 2018 10:59 PM PDT In a keynote speech in Budapest last week, the Observer columnist argued that hostility to migrants is not a fringe project – mainstream politicians have long helped promote fear of 'the other' In October 2013, a ship carrying migrants sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa. Some 300 people drowned. It was not the first time that migrants had drowned in the Mediterranean. In fact, at that time it was estimated that in the previous 25 years at least 20,000 people had died trying to reach the shores of Europe. The real figure was most likely much higher. But that sinking in October 2013 was the first time that such a tragedy had truly impressed itself upon the conscience of Europe. Continue reading... |
| It's Donald Trump's party – and he'll cry havoc if he wants to Posted: 09 Jun 2018 10:00 PM PDT The president is a loose cannon but Republican voters like what his frenzied fire can do. | Inside North Korea: a pastel fairyland built to forget Posted: 10 Jun 2018 12:00 AM PDT The candy-coloured, fantastical architecture of Pyongyang is revealed in a forthcoming book When Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un finally meet face-to-face at their momentous summit in Singapore on Tuesday, it will be more than a coming together of two powerful men with a penchant for missiles and curious haircuts. Beyond the jocular Twitter exchanges over nuclear war, the president and the supreme leader share a dearly held passion for outre architecture and flamboyant interiors. The Trump style is the better known of the two. The builder-president has adorned the world with puffed-up towers swathed in golden mirror glass, his own New York penthouse is a gilded Louis XIV fantasy, while his Florida getaway heaves with marble mouldings, leaping from gothic to Moorish like an encyclopaedia of dictator chic. "Coming out of church, guess who is hiding in the bushes taking photos, yet won't give his name or who he works for," Joyce tweeted. | Trump believes the North Korea summit is all about him. But Kim has a plan, too Posted: 09 Jun 2018 04:05 PM PDT The president expects to emerge as a hero, but the Korean leader may be coolly playing him to score points against China In 1789, a year of revolution, Benjamin Franklin wrote that nothing was certain except death and taxes. His adage may be due an update as Donald Trump prepares for a mould-breaking summit with North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Singapore on Tuesday. Who can be sure that the meeting will produce agreement on scrapping the North's nuclear weapons, as the Americans hope? Nobody knows whether the "hermit kingdom" will come in from the cold. These are big, unanswered questions. Continue reading... |
