But given the skinny chip's veneration, whether enjoyed with a dab of mayonnaise or taken au naturel, the ramshackle appearance of many of the frietkots from which they are dispensed around Brussels has been a source of shame for the city council. The embarrassment has prompted officials in the capital to commission a prize-winning architect to rebuild 10 of the chip shacks, creating shiny, ecologically friendly, shrines to frites. | 'They're everywhere': has the decline of the seal hunt saved the polar bear? Posted: 24 May 2018 01:00 AM PDT Despite vanishing sea ice and shorter winters, Labrador's polar bear population is among the healthiest in the world – and it could be thanks to the harp seals Guido Rich, 28, an Inuit hunter from Rigolet, Labrador, brings his Ski-Doo to a careful stop on the sea ice, mindful of the precious cargo it hauls: the body of an 800lb male polar bear. It takes Rich and two other men to roll the animal off the sled and on to the ice, while his wife and young children watch. His sister, Natasha Pottle, who shot the bear the night before, hands her brother the plastic bags used to store liver, hair and fat samples that will be sent away for lab testing. The animal will provide valuable information for Labrador's biologists, a small windfall for his family and meat for the community. Rich has barely begun cutting into the hide when a parade of people from the village start arriving to take pictures, offer observations or just watch respectfully. Continue reading... |

| Ireland’s abortion referendum is revolutionary politics, whoever wins | Lizzie O’Shea Posted: 21 May 2018 10:00 PM PDT Women's reproductive rights have been ill-served by top-down politics. The campaign to repeal the eighth should inspire us all No matter what happens in Ireland's abortion referendum on Friday, the campaign should serve as an inspiration. For too long, women in Ireland and elsewhere have paid the price for the notion that abortion is electoral poison and no good will come of politicians campaigning on it. The eighth amendment to the Irish constitution, introduced in 1983 and valuing the life of the mother and foetus equally, in effect prohibited lawmakers from regulating abortion. This law has had insidious and devastating consequences. In 1992 women were given the right to travel abroad to obtain an abortion, and about 170,000 women have, usually to England, effectively sweeping the issue under the carpet. In 2012 the case of Savita Halappanavar brought the issue back home. Seventeen weeks pregnant, she went to hospital in pain and began to miscarry. She was denied an abortion and later died of septicaemia. Partly as a result of this tragic case, the sense grew that this law had generated a crisis in women's health, but there was little appetite to take the necessary steps to achieve reform.
