| Art prices at ‘obscene’ levels as Chinese join high-spending elite Posted: 19 May 2018 08:00 AM PDT Fine art is almost always a good bet for the super-rich, but it's worth remembering that the $157m paid for a Modigliani last week could have supported 10,000 budding artists for a year When even the experts are warning that prices for works of art have become obscene, it is probably time to run a dispassionate eye over the multimillion-dollar frenzy for certain works. Last week, Nu couché (sur le côté gauche) by Amedeo Modigliani sold to an unnamed buyer for $157m, and a new record was set for a David Hockney painting when Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica was bought for $28.5m. | Russia uncovered: writers on the World Cup host nation Posted: 20 May 2018 01:30 AM PDT With the World Cup kicking off in less than a month and tensions with the west at their worst level in decades, Observer writers and Russia experts go behind the spin to analyse the host nation's social and political landscape It is the most politically charged World Cup in recent memory: Russia, resurgent under Vladimir Putin, is set to host the 32-team tournament next month amid scandals ranging from sports doping to spy poisonings. Relations between Moscow and London are at their coolest since the cold war and the recent events in Salisbury even led to brief speculation (aided by Boris Johnson) that England could skip the tournament, recalling the Olympics boycotts of the 1980s. | The fight to define the very essence of Israel | Bernard Avishai Posted: 20 May 2018 12:05 AM PDT Behind the seemingly intractable Palestinian conflict lie deeper questions about what Israel wants to be: an 'open' globalised democracy or a 'closed' Jewish state Perhaps the hardest thing for people not living in Israel to grasp is that for most Israelis, talk about how to deal with the question of Palestine is just foreground. In the background is a contest over what kind of state Israel must be. It is not just thinking about war, with Iranian proxies, say, which makes the situation demoralising. Thinking about peace is also demoralising, though in a different way. For Israel would not come out of a sustained war the same country it was when it went in, but nobody expects it to come out of a peace process the same country, either. What leaks into nearly every conversation these days is uncertainty about Israel's future boundaries. I don't just mean geographic boundaries. I mean legal, institutional and cultural limits. Most people in the country will insist that Israel is and must remain Jewish and democratic. Almost nobody can tell you what this means. Continue reading... |
| Trump/Russia review: Le Carré meets Mario Puzo in Moscow and Manhattan Posted: 19 May 2018 10:00 PM PDT Seth Hettena has written a history of the president's dealings with Russia that reads like a page-turning mob thriller It's probably a bad sign for the republic when the only way to write a plausible biography of the president of the United States is to make it read like a cross between The Godfather and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. | The Observer view on Venezuela’s need for profound change, not a sham poll | Observer editorial Posted: 19 May 2018 10:00 PM PDT The country is on its knees and Nicolás Maduro, its president, seems ill-equipped to offer salvation Is the Trump administration fomenting a military coup in Venezuela? It would not, after all, be the first time the US has been implicated in attempts at regime change there. In April 2002, Venezuela's elected president, the late Hugo Chávez, was briefly deposed and arrested by the army, before a supporters' revolt rescued him. The Bush administration denied involvement, but subsequent independent investigations, including by the Observer, suggested "senior officials in the US government" were not only aware of the plot but privately assured its organisers of Washington's support. The Observer is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, founded in 1791. It is published by Guardian News & Media and is editorially independent. |
