| 'This is what REAL feminism looks like': how women's rights are being used to sell guns Posted: 17 May 2018 04:04 PM PDT A photo of a woman brandishing a weapon in her graduation picture is the latest example of gun enthusiasts using female empowerment to further their agenda Firearms, it would seem, have become a feminist issue. Both second amendment proponents and the gun industry are using female empowerment, and even the #MeToo movement, to sell their products and fight back against gun control. Meanwhile, the last few months have seen a spate of viral social posts by women brandishing guns, apparently in the name of feminism. On Tuesday, a 22-year-old Kent State University graduate, Kaitlin Marie, garnered headlines after posting graduation photos in which she was holding a semiautomatic rifle. Marie wrote: "As a woman, I refuse to be a victim & the second amendment ensures that I don't have to be." Continue reading... |

| Populists’ rise to power in Italy sets perilous precedent for EU | Jon Henley Posted: 17 May 2018 04:35 AM PDT Some analysts fear coalition of M5S and the League could tip Italy into a Greek-style crisis Italy's new government, likely to be formally confirmed within the next few days, sets a perilous precedent for Brussels: it marks the first time a founding member of the EU has been led by populist, anti-EU forces. From the EU's perspective, the coalition of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the far-right League looks headstrong and unpredictable, possibly even combustible. Leaked drafts of their government "contract" include provision for a "conciliation committee" to settle expected disagreements. Continue reading... |

| Knife + Heart review – bizarre shaggy-dog story of cheesy 70s porn Posted: 18 May 2018 01:10 AM PDT Set in the world of gay erotica, this strange, violent fantasy starring Vanessa Paradis isn't funny – or serious – enough Yann Gonzalez is the French director who startled UK audiences with his last film in 2013, an eroto-surrealist extravaganza called You and the Night, starring Eric Cantona as a legendarily endowed stud who exists in an eternal twilight of vampire priapism. If that were not enough, he has now come to the Cannes competition and detained us all for an hour and 40 minutes with a bizarre new piece of fantasy: a weird mix of hardcore whimsy-porn that pays pert, tongue-in-cheek homage to what might be seen as the quainter and even more innocent days of 70s gay erotica, but with a harsher, darker streak of violence. | Separating sick Inuit kids and parents is medical colonialism all over again Posted: 17 May 2018 03:00 AM PDT In Quebec, air ambulances continue the incomprehensible practice of separating children and parents – despite no written policy demanding it It was a relatively quiet summertime shift in the emergency room at Montreal children's hospital when the child – an Inuk preschooler – was rushed in on a stretcher. He had been airlifted in from a remote community after a motor vehicle accident, and he was entirely alone. Suddenly he began to cry. We couldn't speak his language, and couldn't find a hospital interpreter. Had he developed a sudden headache? Should we rush him to the CT scanner? While trying to figure out how to proceed, we found someone who spoke Inuktitut, and learned the heartbreaking reason the child was crying: he missed his mother, who had to stay behind, more than 1,500km away.
