| Korea summit: denuclearisation goal reiterated in joint statement short on details - live Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:12 AM PDT Kim Jong-un and the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, come face to face at the inter-Korean meeting in the demilitarised zone. Follow all the developments and reaction with our live blog Rehearsals and realism ahead of historic summit
The two leaders will now have regular contact through a hotline and will build liaison offices in both countries
Kim and Moon hammered out a joint statement that is short on concrete steps and heavy on aspirational goals. It's mostly about holding more talks between the two side on issues ranging from families divided by the Korean war to transport links. There's one section about denuclearisation, but it only repeats the general idea that "the South and North have confirmed their common goal of realizing a nuclear-free Korean peninsula". | 'Lives will be lost': 700,000 Rohingya face cyclone season under tarpaulin Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:00 PM PDT As the monsoon rains start in Bangladesh, there are grave concerns for refugees For 14 terrifying days, Nabil Alam, his wife and nine children trudged through the jungles of northern Myanmar to reach the border with Bangladesh. The entire way, Alam looked over his shoulder for soldiers or local militia groups armed with clubs and knives. That was eight months ago. Now, in the refugee camps of south-east Bangladesh, he is anxiously watching the sky, awaiting the dark clouds that will soon drench the area in months of monsoon rain. Continue reading... |
| Merkel faces tough White House trade talks as Macron a hard act to follow Posted: 26 Apr 2018 10:45 PM PDT German chancellor will come armed with facts to avert a trade war but the impulsive US leader is unlikely to be swayed Angela Merkel travels to Washington on Friday armed with binders of facts and figures aimed at averting a trade war between the EU and the US – but little hope of swaying an intransigent Donald Trump, who remains convinced that their trading relationship is biased in Europe's favour. Officials accompanying Merkel will try to convince the US president that America's trade deficit with Germany is not only shrinking but also determined by factors beyond the chancellor's control. They will remind Trump that America exports more cars made by German companies on American soil than it imports vehicles made in Germany. Continue reading... |
| Trump administration under fire for not contributing to Syria donors conference Posted: 26 Apr 2018 02:46 PM PDT While the conference fell $5bn short of the UN target, the state department said the US remained the biggest funder of humanitarian efforts The Trump administration is under fire for contributing nothing to a Syria donors conference, helping lead to a $5bn shortfall in a UN fund for Syrian civilians in need inside the country and in refugee camps around the region. The unprecedented US failure to contribute anything to the Syria humanitarian fund came soon after Donald Trump called for a rapid withdrawal of US troops from the country, and for wealthy countries in the region to bear more of the financial burden of the Syrian crisis. The supposed witnesses were unveiled by Russia at the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague in an attempt to discredit western claims that Bashar al-Assad's Syrian regime mounted the chemical attack on 7 April. The attack two years ago prompted a national outcry, as did the subsequent trial, which was widely criticised as a cross-examination of the 18-year-old woman rather than the men who attacked her. A magnitude-5.5 earthquake hit the south-eastern city of Pohang on 15 November, injuring at least 70 people, temporarily displacing hundreds, and causing millions of dollars of damage. His administration was immediately criticized for its reluctance to accept people fleeing the war-torn country: in the past six months, the US has accepted 44 Syrian refugees – just two more than died in the Douma gas attack. | Techies v San Francisco: how the city's struggles sparked a blame game Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:00 AM PDT As a clash over scooters highlights inequality and a housing crisis, the city feuds over who's at fault and how to fix things The cold war between San Francisco and the tech industry erupted into open hostilities again this month, when the overnight arrival of hundreds of motorized scooters across the city's streetscape reignited tensions between the techies and the tech-nots. The dockless electric scooters, which were distributed around San Francisco by three competing startups just as the city was preparing to pass legislation to regulate them, have become the latest symbol of competing visions for city living. To critics of the tech industry, they represent everything that is wrong with the "move fast and break things" ethos. To tech evangelists, they are further proof that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. Continue reading... |

| Jeff Sessions is shamefully undermining WEB Du Bois's legacy | Marc Mauer Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:35 AM PDT A justice department program of research fellowships in the civil rights leader's name has been twisted to suit the attorney general's agenda Since 2002, the US Department of Justice's WEB Du Bois program has sponsored research fellowships on issues of race and criminal justice. During Republican and Democratic administrations, a diverse group of academics have carried the spirit of the noted sociologist and civil rights leader to the race challenges of the 21st century. Given the racial disparity endemic at every stage of the justice system the DoJ's investigation of these issues has been praiseworthy. But with Jeff Sessions as attorney general exploring the roots of this injustice may now be compromised. In the recently released solicitation for the Du Bois fellowships the DoJ invited scholars to engage in research on five issues arising out of the "tough on crime" era that would make a student of the Du Bois legacy shudder. | Now is chance for Kosovo deal, says Serbian president – but at what cost? Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:57 AM PDT Aleksandar Vučić will accept independence only if Serbia gets something concrete in return When Nato bombed Serbia in 1999, Aleksandar Vučić was information minister, enforcing censorship rules for the country's president, Slobodan Milošević, who would later be indicted for war crimes. Nearly two decades later, Vučić himself is Serbia's president. Claiming to have shed many of his former nationalist views, and brushing off accusations of authoritarianism, he is now seen by the international community as the man who could sign an agreement that would eventually bring reconciliation over Kosovo.
