Kono makes it look deceptively easy. "Place it in your hands and pull out the edges like this," she says. "Then roll the remaining wax into a ball to make a small lettuce. Place it onto your hand and, starting from the back, fold the bigger leaf towards the middle. Using both hands, gently form a sphere. And there you have it." Continue reading... |

Movie night with the Reagans: a time to disconnect, recharge and be entertained Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:00 PM PST The Reagans were film buffs and watched 363 films mostly on weekends. The ritual is the subject of a memoir by a former aide. It was the cold war. Almost every weekend the American president's inner circle, including a military aide, a senior secret service agent and a Marine One pilot, gathered far from public view at Aspen Lodge. The new Scandi noir: the Korean writers reinventing the thriller Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:00 AM PST The country has emerged as a surprising literary force as a novel by the 'Korean Henning Mankell' bags a six-figure deal and sparks a global bidding war Last December, Korean novelist Un-su Kim set out on an eight-month deep-sea fishing trip as part of research for his next book. Unreachable by phone or email until next August, when his boat docks in Fiji, he has no idea that his thriller The Plotters has been the subject of a wildly enthusiastic auction in the US, where it recently sold to Doubleday for a six-figure sum. German publisher Europa Verlag has called Kim "the Korean Henning Mankell", while publishers in the UK, Czech Republic and Turkey have placed offers, and international film companies are also battling for rights. His agent, Barbara Zitwer, who plans to meet him in Fiji to reveal the news, believes Kim's novel, about an organisation that masterminds assassinations, has caught a wave of interest in Korean thrillers – a previously unknown quantity. "The world is finally embracing them. Korean thriller writers are invigorating the genre," she said. "They are pumping new life into it. Readers are tiring of Scandinavian thrillers – they crave something new." |
Tasmanian election: early results suggest Liberals on course for second term – live updates Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:00 AM PST Can Will Hodgman return as premier or has Labor leader Rebecca White's gamble on pokies reform struck a chord? Follow the latest updates here ...
Well, we've just heard a very interesting chat with Labor MP David O'Byrne, who has been re-elected. O'Byrne was asked whether Labor's policy to remove pokies from pubs and hotels should be reviewed. He was asked multiple times, but offered a fairly lukewarm support. He said the policy aligned with Labor values, but that: After every election, you consider every policy that was put forward to the people of Tasmania. The union movement in Australia has done more in a single day in my view than Senator Eric Abetz has done in his career. Senator Eric Abetz, all the best to you.
The most likely result at the end of tonight would be 13 seats for the Liberal Party, eight seats for Labor, and one for the Greens, with three seats likely to still be undecided at the end of tonight. The Liberal Party looks set to retain three seats each in Bass, Braddon and Lyons, along with two in Denison and two in Franklin. |

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:32 PM PST Australian values are neither clear nor consistent. If we want to make a difference in the world, we should follow New Zealand's lead Of all the Generation X world leaders elected in the last few years – think Justin Trudeau in Canada, Emmanuel Macron in France, and even the 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz in Austria – it is New Zealand's Jacinda Ardern who has the firmest sense of what kind of country she wants to lead on the world stage. Just four months since taking office after a decade of conservative rule, and while trying to carefully balance the views of three parties in government, New Zealand is already showing signs of regaining its trademark standing as a small but confident, principled and creative presence internationally. And Australia should take notice. Continue reading... |
