How an endangered salamander forced a Texan city to save water

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:30 PM PST

When it comes to water, San Antonio may be the world's most forward-thinking city. But it learned to conserve a precious resource the hard way – and from an unlikely teacher

This weekend in San Antonio, a new park is opening in one of the poorer neighbourhoods just south of downtown, at a spot where two spring-fed rivers meet. The $13m, three-acre Confluence Park has huge concrete flower petals that will gather rainwater for reuse, and will house educational facilities about sustainable water consumption.

"This park is the place that you will want to visit when it rains," says Matthew Driffill, recreation superintendent for the San Antonio River Authority.

'Lives will be lost': Bangladesh rains promise further misery for Rohingya

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:00 AM PST

With the monsoon season nearing in Bangladesh, refugees living in makeshift shelters after fleeing Myanmar face a major risk from floods and landslides

A little girl dressed in pink, maybe three years old, is smiling through a rip in a tarpaulin. She is leaning against the bamboo pole holding up her home. Below her is a 15-foot drop, straight down to a dried-up riverbed.

The steep valleys across the huge Rohingya refugee camps are a growing concern as Bangladesh's monsoon season approaches. Last summer, when hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled across the border from Myanmar in the face of an alleged genocide, the Bangladesh government allocated state-owned land for their camps.

UK weather: snow disruption continues with hundreds of drivers stranded – live

Alerts in place across UK and Ireland, as police urge people not to travel during blizzards and strong winds of storm Emma and Beast from the East

Electricity North West says the number of properties without power has increased from 3,000 to 5,000 in the region. It blamed 100 separate faults on the network, each requiring teams to attend site to make repairs.

The combination of very high winds and snow has made restoration efforts very difficult.

Electricity North West incident manager, Chris Fox said: "High winds across the North West have caused damage to our overhead line network, and the snow and ice have added weight to the lines in some instances causing lines to come down and poles to break.

"The snow is also causing access issues even with our fleet of 4x4s, and we are working with the emergency services to highlight priority areas for restoration. Please get in touch with us if you are without power and stay safe and warm until our engineers can restore power."

The main hospital in Exeter has postponed all planned surgery and diagnostic appointments, due to the severe weather.

An "Internal critical incident" has been declared by the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

"Due to the severe conditions, the trust has declared an internal critical incident which means we are prioritising all available staff and resources to urgent and emergency services only today at our main Wonford site and in community teams.

"As a result we have postponed all outpatient and planned routine surgery and diagnostic appointments today and we will contact all patients affected to reschedule as soon as possible. All emergency services including our emergency department are running as normal at this time.

Morning, please see our latest Trust statement on the ongoing impact of the adverse weather today (2nd March). pic.twitter.com/j4B96AA61c

Focusing on schoolgirl abductions distorts the view of life in Nigeria | Chitra Nagarajan

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:00 AM PST

It is simplistic to imply that all victims are female or that women are not active agents in domestic and community life

Once again, abducted Nigerian schoolgirls are making international headlines. Last Monday, 110 girls were taken from the Government Girls Science and Technical School in the town of Dapchi in Nigeria's north-eastern Yobe state. Fighters belonging to one of the armed opposition groups (commonly known as Boko Haram) operating in the area attacked the town and took the girls who were unable to escape.

The attack came shortly after the military withdrew troops from the town. Then came a pattern that is familiar to anyone following events in north-east Nigeria, where the abduction of girls from Chibok in April 2014 brought the region to national and global attention. First, there was silence from government officials, followed by disputes in the media about the number of girls missing. Then an announcement that girls had been rescued by the army, which was later retracted.

As the Guardian and Global Witness revealed that almost four environmental defenders were murdered every week in 2017, War on Want learned of two more killings through our Latin American partner organisations.

On 24 January, Márcio "Marcinho" Matos, involved in the fight for rights of landless peasants in Bahia in north-east Brazil, was shot in front of his son. Three days later, Temístocles "don Temis" Machado, a prominent figure in the struggle of Afro-Colombian communities across the Colombian Pacific, was murdered in his home in the Isla de Paz community.
