Steve Bannon refuses lawmakers' questions, following 'White House instructions'

Democrat says Bannon's lawyer said former strategist, facing subpoena, would otherwise have been willing to respond

Steve Bannon refused to answer questions from the House Intelligence Committee during a closed-door session, even after he was issued a subpoena to testify by the committee on Tuesday, saying that the White House had told him not to.

Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said during a news conference after the marathon hearing, that Bannon's lawyer had told the committee that the former White House aide "was willing to answer our questions but under instructions from the White House not to". Schiff condemned what he called "a gag order from the White House".

North Korea will send a large contingent of cheerleaders to next month's Winter Olympics, South Korea has announced, as the two sides prepare to present their plan for a "peace games" to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the weekend.

South Korea's unification ministry said on Wednesday that the North had offered to send 230 members of its all-female cheerleading squad to the Games in Pyeongchang.

US authorities have arrested a former CIA agent, Hong Kong resident Jerry Chun Shing Lee, after discovering he had an unauthorised notebook that contained the identities of undercover US spies.

Lee, a naturalized US citizen also known as Zhen Cheng Li, was arrested late on Monday after he arrived at JFK international airport in New York.

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was jailed for three months on Wednesday for obstructing the clearance of a major encampment during mass pro-democracy protests in 2014, the second time he has been imprisoned over the rallies.

Wong, 21, who had pleaded guilty to the contempt charge, was already on bail pending an appeal over a six-month sentence for another offence related to the Umbrella Movement.

The war in Yemen has killed or injured more than 5,000 children and left another 400,000 severely malnourished and fighting for their lives, according to the UN children's agency.

In a report unveiled on Tuesday, Unicef said nearly 2 million Yemeni children were out of school, a quarter of them since the conflict escalated when a Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015.

Kirill Serebrennikov, 48, is accused of embezzling 133m roubles (£1.7m) in government funds allocated to his Platforma theatre project. A Moscow court on Tuesday extended his house arrest, which he has been under since August, until 19 April.

US to withhold $65m in aid for Palestinian refugees

The United States will give a UN agency $60m in aid for Palestinian refugees but withhold a further $65m for now, the state department said on Tuesday, as the Trump administration carried out a threat it made two weeks ago to cut funding.

While saying the decision would sustain schools and health services, state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert echoed Donald Trump in calling on other nations to provide more funds because he believes the United States pays more than its share.

Israeli authorities are searching for a British man who is missing in the Negev desert amid fears that he could be suffering from Jerusalem syndrome, a psychiatric condition whose sufferers believe they are prophets or other biblical figures.

Oliver McAfee, 29, a devout Christian, was last seen on 21 November while cycling near the southern Israeli town of Mitzpe Ramon. Hikers found his wallet, keys and computer tablet earlier this month, and other possessions, including his bicycle, bags and shoes, were found separately.

A few hours before his death, Abdullah Dilsouz was playing cricket with other child refugees in the wasteland behind the port of Calais. Friends said he was excited to be nearing the end of a long journey from Afghanistan, and optimistic that he would soon be able to join his brother in London.

But the 15-year-old was run over by a refrigeration truck on 22 December – one of three asylum-seekers to be killed on the roads outside the port in the past month. A fourth has been seriously injured and remains in a coma in hospital and on Sunday night an Iraqi refugee had his legs severed by a train near Dunkirk.
