'A great project for all Egyptians': Egypt to repair synagogue in city of eight Jews

Posted: 05 Sep 2017 11:43 PM PDT

Many welcome Egyptian government's decision to restore the Eliyahu Hanavi in Alexandria, but some question the motives

Alexandria's historic synagogue has very few visitors. In a city once home to almost 25,000 Jews, Alexandria's Jewish community is now said to number fewer than eight people, most of whom are elderly.

Originally built in 1354, the Eliyahu Hanavi's grand facade and cavernous interior welcomed thousands of worshippers until the departure of Egypt's Jews after the creation of Israel. It then fell into into disrepair and water damage led to the collapse of the ceiling on its upper floor.

'It's better to die here': why don't Mumbaikars leave dangerous buildings?

Posted: 05 Sep 2017 11:00 PM PDT

Fifty six people have died in three building collapses over the past two months. But with rent control meaning tenants can pay as little as 12 pence a month – and little hope of a place in any replacement building – thousands simply refuse to go

Amid the bustle of Mumbai's western suburbs, in a dilapidated 60-year-old building, live Heena Tolani, her husband and two children. The staircase to her apartment is rickety, its wooden hand-rail held together with string. The road beneath is visible through gaps in the floor.

Inside her home, bamboo sticks prop up the ceiling. Sections of roof have collapsed on at least three occasions.

Ryanair: pay £5 for priority boarding to carry on wheelie bags

Priority boarders will still be able to carry on two bags, but all other passengers will only be allowed to take one smaller bag on board the aircraft. A second, larger, wheelie bag will have to be placed in the hold free of charge at the boarding gate, to be collected at baggage reclaim on arrival.

Home Office leak shows unpicking of EU nationals' family reunion rights

Document shows a narrower definition of term 'family member' and confirms European case law will no longer be binding on the UK

The leaked Home Office document on Britain's post-Brexit immigration policy spells out for the first time how ending the jurisdiction of the European court of justice will weaken family reunion rights for EU nationals in Britain.

The right – under which EU nationals can bring family members, including spouses, to live with them in the UK – is already a flashpoint in the Brexit talks on citizens' rights. But the leaked document shows the Home Office wants to go further and extend restrictions that could turn thousands more into "Skype families".

Africa doesn’t need white tech entrepreneurs – it needs a level playing field | Eliza Anyangwe

Posted: 06 Sep 2017 02:00 AM PDT

African entrepreneurs face huge barriers – and our adoration of the intrepid explorer armed with a Harvard degree privileges everything foreign and white

Last week I attended my first TED conference. Held on an expansive lodge on the foot of Mount Meru, in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, TED Global 2017 promised to "share bold ideas, tough truths and jaw-dropping creative visions". It delivered. For three full days, 700-plus attendees from around the world were treated to talks from writers and scientists, artists and academics, politicians and activists. But amid the laughter and the occasional tears, for me there were intermittent bouts of anger.

Among TED's "astonishing group of speakers" was a creature anyone who watches the African continent will know well: the tech entrepreneur. From Morocco to Madagascar, Africa has emerged as the last frontier for entrepreneurs, a land overflowing with problems that any intrepid explorer, armed with a Harvard degree and a bright idea can make his name and fortune solving (it's nearly always "his").

Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday afternoon that he has "a great heart" and "a great love" for the Dreamers. But hours earlier the US president had delivered what many saw as a kick in teeth and, like a school bully, he did so from a position of weakness rather than strength.
