Angela Merkel's Ikea appeal makes her part of Germany's furniture Posted: 22 Sep 2017 06:09 AM PDT Few doubt the chancellor's 'flatpack' formula will win her another election, but can it meet the challenges of the next four years? Throughout her 12 years in power, Angela Merkel's political obituarists have ever been eager to spot the wobbly legs or worn-out hinges that could signal an imminent collapse – be it over her handling of Germany's nuclear phase-out, the Greek bailout programme or her handling of the 2015 refugee crisis. But as Germany goes to the polls this Sunday, what one former campaign leader describes as the chancellor's "Ikea principle" of pragmatic flatpack centrism is all but certain to hold firm for a fourth election in a row. In latest polls on Friday Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) retained a double-digit lead over her nearest challengers, in spite of a late surge for the third-placed far-right. Speaking days before the ballot, scheduled for Monday, Barzani said the majority of the global community had underestimated the determination of the Kurds. It had also, he claimed, made a miscalculation in believing that his intention to hold the ballot was a "pressure card" designed to draw concessions, rather than a tangible first step towards a long-held goal of sovereignty. Trump's debut at the UN: threats, taunts – and gasps of alarm from the diplomats Posted: 23 Sep 2017 01:00 AM PDT The general assembly has always had its theatrical elements, with the world's blowhards playing to the gallery – but this time the jester has taken centre stage The summit week of the UN general assembly was always bound to be fraught with risk for US prestige: it would involve Donald Trump interacting in a multilateral arena – and Trump famously does not play nicely with other leaders. At the Nato summit in May he manhandled Duško Marković, the prime minister of Montenegro, to get to the centre of a group photograph, where he stood preening among his bemused peers. Trump misreads North Korea’s sacred dynasty at his peril | Michael Brabazon Posted: 23 Sep 2017 01:00 AM PDT In the escalating war of insults, Trump is a 'gangster fond of playing with fire', Kim Jong-un a 'madman' who will be tested as never before. Yet such rhetoric can only add to Kim's heaven-sent conviction that he alone can save humanity Before trying to cow North Korea with military intervention, we need to understand what motivates Kim Jong-un. Dangerously for the US and its Asian allies, there is something missing from the west's analysis of the "rogue state" and its ruling dynasty. Theresa May, anti-slavery crusader? Her craven quest for trade deals suggests not | Aidan McQuade Posted: 22 Sep 2017 05:04 AM PDT It is hard to see how the UK can take a lead on fighting slavery when Brexit has forced the prime minister to negotiate with economies driven by exploitation Theresa May has used the 2017 UN general assembly to renew her campaign against slavery, and marked this with the publication of a call to action that has so far been endorsed by 37 nations. While focusing principally on the criminal justice response, May's plan to end forced labour, modern slavery and human trafficking contains some important new departures for the UK government. It recognises the need for governments to act proactively, in partnership with business, to exclude slavery and forced labour from national economies and promote decent work. It acknowledges the importance of better protection for groups that suffer discrimination and migrants. And it underlines the value of proper engagement in the struggle by humanitarian and development workers. Continue reading...This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
