Venezuelans plan country-wide protests in open defiance of government ban Posted: 28 Jul 2017 10:34 AM PDT 'We will exercise our right to protest every say until it is no longer necessary' Venezuelans are planning to defy a government ban on public demonstrations and risk deadly repression with marches across the country to protest against a vote Sunday that opposition forces say will mark the end of democracy. At least four people have been killed this week since the opposition called a two-day strike, adding to the toll of more than 100 dead in a wave of unrest which began in April. The government's ban on protests – and the opposition's defiance – only heightened the risk of further violence, as more than 370,000 troops were sent out across the country. |

'I slept on the floor in a flat near Harrods': stories of modern slavery Posted: 29 Jul 2017 01:00 AM PDT More than 200 years since it was abolished, slavery is rife all over the world. People who have escaped describe their ordeal When Elvira arrived at Heathrow in 2014, she thought she had escaped the abuse she'd faced as a domestic worker in Qatar. Yet the exploitation the Filipino woman was about to suffer would surpass anything she experienced in the Middle East. The 50-year-old was taken to a luxury flat in Kensington, where her boss, the sister of her "madam" in Qatar, made her work 20 hours a day, allowing her only one piece of bread and no wages. She was trapped in a life of servitude, while metres away central London bustled with shoppers. More than 200 years since it was abolished, slavery is thriving. The UN's International Labour Organisation estimates that 21 million people around the world are trapped in some form of modern slavery. In many cases, the physical shackles of the past have been replaced by less visible but equally effective forms of coercion and control: a worker on a factory line crippled by recruitment debts he or she cannot pay back; a man on a construction site in a foreign country without his passport or wages; a woman selling drugs on a roadside threatened with beatings and rape if she doesn't earn enough. Dig deep into the supply chain of the world's major commodities, and you'll find instances of slavery. From the food we eat to the phones we use and the clothes we wear, its influence is pervasive. Closing an HIV lifeline in Africa: the dire impact of Trump's abortion crackdown Posted: 29 Jul 2017 12:00 AM PDT Trump's drastic funding cuts could reverse the progress made on HIV in Africa, where many different healthcare organisations also offer family planning Celeste is a 30-year-old widow mother of two from the poor suburbs of Maputo, Mozambique's capital. She is HIV-positive, and since her husband died from an Aids-related illness last year, she has no way of supporting herself, though she tries to help her mother work her small vegetable patch. One organisation is helping her through the darkest times, giving her advice and help, and ensuring that she takes her medication: Amodefa – the Mozambican Association for Family Development. "If it wasn't for Amodefa's visits, I wouldn't be here," says Celeste, now pregnant again, as she sits in the dusty yard in front of her mother's house where she has lived since last year. Inside the Élysée: the reflected glory of Macron's gilded cage Posted: 29 Jul 2017 12:00 AM PDT France's president likes to tightly control all his communications and keeps journalists at arm's-length – in stark contrast to his predecessor One morning this spring, I found myself sitting in a place where the silence seemed so extraordinary, so far from the normal riotous cacophony of Paris, that it felt like being shut away from real life. Now and again you could hear the chime of a golden clock, a faint footstep on carpet, or a bird chirping in the perfectly-kept gardens that stretched out beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Whatever might be happening outside, here it felt as though one was perfectly muffled and cocooned; wrapped in several layers of metaphorical cotton wool and removed from it all. |

Michael Moore's Trump-baiting stage show hits Broadway with a mission Posted: 28 Jul 2017 05:04 AM PDT As The Terms of My Surrender opens, the Oscar-winning provocateur hopes the Broadway show will spur substantial change at the White House The tagline of Michael Moore's new one-man stage production – "Can a Broadway show bring down a sitting president?" – could be mistaken for the worst kind of New York City navel-gazing. Even the best efforts to elect Hillary Clinton by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who rewrote the lyrics of his mega-hit Hamilton for a fundraiser, fell short. Only from inside the coastal-elite bubble, surely, could a Broadway production be mistaken for a potent political weapon. Continue reading... |

The Guardian view on Pakistan and the Panama Papers: an international affair | Editorial Posted: 28 Jul 2017 11:07 AM PDT Prime minister Nawaz Sharif's ousting was sparked by revelations in the leaked files from an offshore law firm. The global elite are no longer the only ones thinking and working across borders No prime minister of Pakistan has completed a full term in power since the country won independence 70 years ago. Nawaz Sharif was a year away from doing so; instead he has been ousted for a third time. On Friday the supreme court disqualified him from office and referred the issue of his family's offshore assets to anti-corruption authorities. Mr Sharif denies the allegations, but stood down at once; his ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party is expected to nominate a successor shortly. Though this leaves Pakistan's politics in turmoil, it is a very international affair. It was sparked by revelations in the Panama Papers – the unprecedented leak from an offshore law firm – concerning luxury London property, bought through British Virgin Islands companies linked to Mr Sharif's children, who were minors at the time. In 2008, they used the Swiss arm of Deutsche Bank to borrow £7m against the flats. Continue reading... |
The week in patriarchy: will this administration ever calm down? Will there never be a calm week again? After Trump casually tweeted out that trans people would no longer be allowed to serve in any capacity in the military (tell that to the 15,000 already serving) – a rule that cannot be enacted over Twitter and one military leaders seemed to have no idea was coming – we were treated to the drama of Anthony Scaramucci f'ing up his first week on staff and the GOP's scurry to take away healthcare for millions. So, you know, the usual. Part of the problem with the speed of the news lately is that when everything is horrible and urgent, things start to lose meaning. Everything starts to blend together and feel like just another day of nightmares, just another news story, just another tweet. We cannot forget the individual people this affects the most – whether it's a healthcare law that will hurt kids who have pre-existing conditions or a military ban on a vulnerable population. These aren't just stories or statistics, they're lives. Continue reading... |
