El Salvador's absolute ban on abortion – long considered one of the world's most ruthless – is facing its greatest challenge in years. Buoyed by shifting public attitudes, reproductive rights activists are making headway on a bill to loosen the law for victims of rape and human trafficking, women carrying nonviable pregnancies, and women who risk death or illness. Frozen in time: the miraculous gold rush movies buried under the Yukon ice Posted: 28 Jul 2017 02:10 AM PDT After bulldozers uncovered reels of long-buried silent films on a Canadian building site, painstaking restoration has delivered a fascinating glimpse of boom time in Dawson City – and the artistic delights to be found there In 1978, in north-west Canada's Yukon territory, construction on a new recreation centre was under way in a small rural settlement called Dawson City. As bulldozers tore up the ground where the previous sports hall had stood, a remarkable discovery came to light: hundreds of reels of ancient nitrate film. Some 533 silent films were recovered, including newsreels and features of all types, dating from the 1910s and 20s. Most were previously unknown to film scholars or thought to be totally lost. But for 49 years the inhospitable cold of the Yukon landscape had safely protected the films – which had been found at the bottom of an old swimming pool. Film-maker Bill Morrison has pieced together some of these cinematic relics into a sprawling, hypnotic rumination on a long-forgotten past, called Dawson City: Frozen Time. Morrison, whose previous work includes the acclaimed found-footage essay Decasia, explains the route the footage took from building site to the Canadian national archives in Ottawa – transported by a Hercules military aircraft after civilian courier firms refused to deliver what they considered dangerously flammable material. Morrison says he first heard about the footage as an art student in the 1980s. "It became a story that archivists told – a wonderful almost-folktale. But it was all word of mouth. There was only one article written about it in the mid-80s." he says. "Now, most people my age or younger have never heard of it. So I do think cultural memory has a shelf life of eight to 10 years and then people forget." Continue reading... |

Can we ever achieve the greatest aspiration – healthcare for everyone? | Lucy Lamble Posted: 28 Jul 2017 01:00 AM PDT The world is slowly accepting the idea that universal access to health services is not just a utopian ideal, but in countries such as Tanzania much remains to be done If the workers are not healthy then the economy won't be healthy – it's a simple truth. Ali Joseph, a driver in the Tanzanian port city of Dar es Salaam, knows this better than most. Driving to work one morning, a lorry ploughed into Ali's autorickshaw, breaking his pelvis and burning his legs. |

France, Spain and Swden all beat UK with solid growth in Q2 – business live Posted: 28 Jul 2017 02:20 AM PDT All the day's economic and financial news, including new growth reports from France and the US
Earlier:
Breaking! Economic confidence across the eurozone has inched up to its highest level in a decade. It's the latest in a stream of upbeat data, which underline how Europe is putting its debt crisis behind it. "While the UK wrestles with its lowest levels of consumer confidence since the Brexit vote, things are far rosier on the continent. The latest reading suggests that spending is at healthy levels in the eurozone despite the heightened political and economic uncertainty. "With the first quarter of the year proving to be a challenge for the eurozone following UK and French general elections, spirits haven't been dampened in the aftermath and consumers refuse to be unfazed by tricky economic conditions.
Today's eurozone growth figures have helped to push the euro a little higher against the US dollar. The euro is back over $1.17 this morning, a gain of 0.2%. Thanks to William Fotheringham for his 26 Tours of duty in France | Brief letters Posted: 27 Jul 2017 10:31 AM PDT Prosecutions of gay men and lesbians in the 1990s | The Archers and BBC pay | William Fotheringham and the Tour de France | Gender reassignment plea in Northanger Abbey | Cornwall's east coast Edward Lord states that I was wrong to say that gay men and lesbians could be arrested for kissing in public in 1990 (Letters, 27 July). It is sad to see somebody connected with Pride attempting to diminish the very real persecution that my community faced. In fact, as Peter Tatchell has written, gay men and lesbians "continued to be prosecuted, right up until the early 1990s, under public order and breach of the peace laws, for public displays of affection, such as kissing and cuddling. Such prosecutions ended only when the LGBT direct action group, OutRage!, highlighted and protested against them." • I note that the day after Patricia Greene revealed that she was paid only £16,000 a year for her role in The Archers, her character, Jill Archer, was arrested for assault and given a caution. Clearly the BBC is not giving in easily. |
