Punish Syrian regime harder for chemical attack, say Boris Johnson

Posted: 14 Apr 2017 02:00 PM PDT

UK foreign minister and French counterpart say international community has moral duty to hold perpetrators to account

Boris Johnson and his French counterpart, Jean-Marc Ayrault, have urged the international community to "go further" in punishing those responsible for the chemical weapons attack in Syria on 4 April.

In a strongly-worded editorial for the Guardian, the UK and French foreign ministers make clear they would like to see action against the perpetrators of the attacks, once evidence is gathered. They do not mention Johnson's proposal for punitive sanctions.

New study shows worrisome signs for Greenland ice | John Abraham

Posted: 14 Apr 2017 03:00 AM PDT

Greenland ice is melting fast, and could potentially cause many meters of sea level rise

As humans put more heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, ice around the planet melts. This melting can be a problem, particularly if the melting ice starts its life on land. That's because the melt water flows into the oceans, contributing to rising sea levels. Right now there are three main reasons that sea levels are rising. First, as ocean waters heat, they expand. Second, melting of ice in Antarctica flows into the ocean. Third, melting of ice on Greenland flows into the ocean. There is other melting, like mountain glaciers, but they are minor factors.

Okay, so how much is melting of Greenland contributing to sea level rise? Estimates are that about 270 gigatons of water per year are melting. The melting of an ice sheet like that atop Greenland can occur from the surface as air temperatures and sunlight warm the upper layer of ice. It can also occur from the edges as ice shelves collapse and fall into the oceans in large chunks.

Life on the edge: how will Brexit affect the Northern Irish border?

Posted: 15 Apr 2017 01:00 AM PDT

For years the border was dotted with checkpoints, but now young locals aren't even sure where it is. That's all about to change...

For the past couple of decades, the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland has been shrinking, not in length but in density, all the apparatus of othering – customs posts, identity checks, soldiers – replaced by simple roadside reminders (blink and you'll miss them) that speed limits are now in kilometres instead of miles. Already, though, in the months since the EU referendum, there are signs that could be about to change again. To be precise, there are yellow-and-black signs attached to telegraph poles and lamp-posts on the Northern Ireland side of the all-but-invisible line: "Warning! If there is a hard border this road may be closed from March 2019." I am taking a wild guess that they weren't put up at the behest of the Department for Exiting the European Union.

Last June, Northern Ireland voted 56% to 44% in favour of remaining in the EU, even though the largest party in the power-sharing executive, the Democratic Unionist party (DUP), campaigned on the leave side; theirs was a curious stance to say the least, given that Brexit was almost certain to put a strain on the very union – of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – the party holds dear. For some remainers – the DUP's then executive partners Sinn Féin, in particular – the result demanded that special arrangements be made for Northern Ireland post-Brexit, ranging from associate EU membership to a north-south reunification: anything to keep the border from hardening. Such calls have grown louder since last month's snap assembly election narrowed the gap between the DUP and Sinn Féin from 10 seats to one.

There are many dreadful wars in the Middle East and Africa. With the US and UK parading their morals over Syria (Report, 13 April), I wonder if they would consider that not hundreds or thousands but millions of people are in danger of death by hunger and by the bombing by Saudi warplanes and the US and UK blockade of aid to Yemen. It will no doubt be of comfort to the dead Yemenis that their deaths were by moral US and UK bombs. I am just about to send more money to try and aid the poor Yemeni people as it appears that the UK and US are not going to help.

Balfour declaration still creating division | Letters

Posted: 14 Apr 2017 10:28 AM PDT

Sadly, Professor Hassassian's piece (Opinion, 13 April) has nothing to say about the Palestinian leadership's propagation of anti-Jewish hate speech, support for terrorism and continued rejection of peace talks. Nowhere in the text does Hassassian express any desire for peace and reconciliation. This invites the crucial question: what is the Palestinian leadership communicating to Israel? His refusal to come to terms with the Balfour declaration's "national home for the Jewish people" is precisely the sort of intransigence that prevents a solution to the conflict.
Mark Regev
Ambassador, Embassy of Israel

• I wholeheartedlyagree with Manuel Hassassian that Britain must stop rubbing salt in the wounds of Palestinians, whose human rights are being violated while the British government claims to be standing up for rights around the world. Britain has done little to repair the damage caused during British rule in Palestine, and celebrating the Balfour declaration of 1917 highlights Britain's unwillingness to undo the wrongs of the past century. Recognition of Palestine will not immediately end the Israeli occupation. But such recognition would be an important symbol of support for the Palestinian cause, warning Israel that its repressive and illegal policies will not be tolerated. This is the least Palestine deserves, given the decades of suffering.

What is the historical evidence that Jesus Christ lived and died?

Posted: 14 Apr 2017 06:07 AM PDT

Today some claim that Jesus is just an idea, rather than a real historical figure, but there is a good deal of written evidence for his existence 2,000 years ago

How confident can we be that Jesus Christ actually lived?
The historical evidence for Jesus of Nazareth is both long-established and widespread. Within a few decades of his supposed lifetime, he is mentioned by Jewish and Roman historians, as well as by dozens of Christian writings. Compare that with, for example, King Arthur, who supposedly lived around AD500. The major historical source for events of that time does not even mention Arthur, and he is first referred to 300 or 400 years after he is supposed to have lived. The evidence for Jesus is not limited to later folklore, as are accounts of Arthur.

What do Christian writings tell us?
The value of this evidence is that it is both early and detailed. The first Christian writings to talk about Jesus are the epistles of St Paul, and scholars agree that the earliest of these letters were written within 25 years of Jesus's death at the very latest, while the detailed biographical accounts of Jesus in the New Testament gospels date from around 40 years after he died. These all appeared within the lifetimes of numerous eyewitnesses, and provide descriptions that comport with the culture and geography of first-century Palestine. It is also difficult to imagine why Christian writers would invent such a thoroughly Jewish saviour figure in a time and place – under the aegis of the Roman empire – where there was strong suspicion of Judaism.
