Refugees in Greece suffering after EU deal with Turkey, say NGOs

Oxfam and other groups tell of more than 14,000 trapped in abysmal conditions through 'degrading asylum policies'

Greece is being used as a testing ground for degrading asylum policies that fall short of the democratic values Europe would normally uphold, say refugee groups marking the first anniversary of a deal designed to slow arrivals to the continent.

The accord struck last year between Turkey and the EU has been praised in some quarters for having slowed arrivals into Europe and reduced deaths in the Aegean sea. But basic human rights were lost in the process, the organisations claim.

GreenLeft was the big winner in Wednesday's poll, leaping from four MPs to 14 in the 150-seat parliament, topping the bill in Amsterdam and overtaking the stricken social democratic PvdA to become the largest party of the left nationally.

Extremely British Muslims review – ‘The only extreme thing round here is the size of the rats’

In the final episode of the series, we are confronted with lots of rules, starting with how to enter a toilet. But this was an intimate look at life as a Muslim that will have resonated with all families

And so, for the final episode of Extremely Brummie Muslims – sorry, Extremely British Muslims (Channel 4) – we get right into the nitty-gritty of people's lives in Birmingham – even down to how they enter a toilet. "You enter with your left foot," explains Abdul, a white convert, "because if you were to fall dead, you'd fall backwards if you're on your left foot. But if you're on your right, you fall forwards. So you're not going to die inside the toilet." This is life- or death-changing stuff. No one wants to be found face down in a pile of Andrex rolls.

So far in the series, we have seen Birmingham's "halal dating" circuit – like the Asian Muslim version of First Dates without the romance or Fred Sirieix; a mosque committee crammed with old Asian men chatting about the local lord mayor; and a niqab-wearing woman ride a quad bike. And then there were the beards. Lots of beards.

India, Brexit and the legacy of empire in Africa | Letters

Posted: 16 Mar 2017 11:42 AM PDT

It is disingenuous of Shashi Tharoor to pretend that religious hatred did not exist in India before "the British introduced it" with their policy of "divide and rule" (A legacy of exploitation and ruin, G2, 9 March). He must know that when Mahmood of Ghazni first brought Islam to the subcontinent in the 10th century, his invasion involved incalculable violence, massive loss of life and a wanton destruction of Hindu religious sites on a scale that Islamic State could only dream of. The Mughals, who were Persian and never let their Hindu subjects forget it, were as foreign to India as the British.

Those British were, of course, lucky that a power vacuum had been created by the collapse of the Mughal empire in the second half of the 18th century, which the well-organised East India Company was better able to fill than even such a warlike Hindu warrior caste as the Marathas. As George Orwell pointed out long ago, the Raj was indeed a racket run for the greedy benefit of about 1% of the UK's population (true of all capitalism since about 1980). Nevertheless, there were great moments of civilization and glory, both for the eventually defeated conquerors and those who bravely resisted them, throughout the very short period (in Indian historical terms: 1600-1947) when the British were political players in India.

Rutte was wise to take on the far right | Letters

Posted: 16 Mar 2017 11:41 AM PDT

Jon Henley's analysis is headlined "Rutte's victory over Wilders gives few clues to Europe's direction of travel" (16 March). I disagree. There's one key clue in the relative victory of Mark Rutte's liberal VVD party pushing Geert Wilders' PVV into second place, and that is that Rutte took on Wilders, debating with him and entering into no-holds-barred public meetings and televised question and answer sessions. For too long Europe's mainstream leaders have sought to marginalise the nationalist right by ignoring it or by changing the electoral system. Historically, this has manifestly failed. If French and German political leaders take on the Front National and the Alternative für Deutschland and, like Rutte, point out the flaws in the far right's case, then it is likely that these parties will similarly decline at the forthcoming polls.

Have you been affected by combat stress?

Posted: 16 Mar 2017 06:52 AM PDT

The case of Marine A has highlighted how stress can affect soldiers on active duty. If you or anyone you know has been affected by combat stress, we'd like to hear from you. Share your experiences

In 2011 the British army were deployed in two major conflicts, Iraq and Afghanistan. The intense fighting experienced by soldiers on the frontline in places like Helmand province in Afghanistan were well-documented. However the psychological impact of troops returning time and time again to the frontline is less well known.

Though Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been understood as a condition of war for a longtime, it can often go under-reported. Charities such as The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress have gone a long way towards supporting soldiers with PTSD and other mental health issues, however the condition can still carry a stigma, which may prevent those on active duty and even soldiers who have retired, from reporting it.

The Most Rev Eamonn Casey obituary

Roman Catholic bishop who caused a scandal when it was revealed that he had fathered a son

Eamonn Casey, the former bishop of Galway, who has died aged 89, might have been remembered as one of the most socially liberal figures in the deeply conservative Irish Roman Catholic hierarchy but for his sudden resignation in 1992 following the revelation that he had fathered a son 17 years earlier and paid maintenance to the child's American mother out of diocesan funds.

The story, which convulsed the church and fascinated the country, was perhaps the first breach in the church's hitherto impregnable authoritarian hold over Irish society, as it was yet to be discredited for the child abuse scandals and treatment of single mothers that have undermined its reputation since then.

How punk changed cities – and vice versa

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:00 AM PDT

From New York to Jakarta, punks have long fought for their rights to the city. But just how much have they achieved – and will we ever see a mohawk in City Hall?

From its earliest beginnings, punk as a youth cult was viewed as a social nuisance in cities – irritating but tolerated. But the battle lines were truly drawn in what became a focal point for the nascent hardcore scene: early 1980s Los Angeles.

"LA was a sketchy place then," recalled Dave Markey, whose 1982 documentary The Slog Movie captured the LA punk scene in all its raw, ragged glory. Speaking in a 2011 interview, Markey, who was a teenager at the time, added: "You wouldn't walk down certain streets. But it was also like a playground for us."
