Global fury as Donald Trump’s ban on migrants takes effect

Refugees and passengers from a number of countries detained at airports but Theresa May refuses to condemn move

Donald Trump's decision to ban immigration from a string of Muslim-majority nations has sparked fury and anguish around the world as refugees and migrants were prevented from boarding flights to the US.

Holders of passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen were stopped at airports, while passengers already in the air were detained in the US. In one incident, five Iraqi passengers and one Yemeni, all holding valid visas, were barred from boarding an EgyptAir flight from Cairo to New York and instead redirected on to flights to their home countries.

Muslims make a pitch for populist vote as Dutch politics turns sharp right

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 04:05 PM PST

With far-right leader Geert Wilders ahead in the polls, progressive Islamic party hopes to halt rightward drift

Nourdin el Ouali has grown used to far-right attacks on Dutch Muslims, and to dog-whistle politics. But when the country's prime minister wrote an open letter last week, in effect demanding that minorities integrate or "go away", he was still shocked.

Mark Rutte's letter comes less than two months before a national election, and after months of watching populist Geert Wilders rising into the top position in national polls. If the election were held tomorrow his far-right party would probably be the largest in parliament.

World reacts to Donald Trump's US travel ban – live

Posted: 29 Jan 2017 01:51 AM PST

Latest updates as president's executive order targeting Muslim-majority countries, affecting refugees, causes chaos at airports

The UK government has sent out David Gauke, chief secretary to the treasury, to defend its position.

He insists May was right not to condemn the travel ban earlier adding the government will now make representations to the US on behalf of Britons caught up in the ban.

Next up on Marr was Harriet Harman. My colleague Rowena Mason has just sent this through:

Harriet Harman, former acting Labour leader said it was important as British prime minister that May went to the US to meet the new president.

However she added: "I was apprehensive as we know Donald Trump is misogynist and xenophobic and stands against so many British values, so I was very dismayed when I saw her holding his hand... And then I was horrified when he announced this ban and three times she said it was nothing to do with me. Well it to do with us She obviously needs to be careful as PM but she needs to be strong as well.

Ruth Negga: 'There are films that really mark you. Loving is one of those for me'

The Ethiopian-Irish actor has shot to fame thanks to a restrained performance in the interracial marriage drama Loving. And now she has an Oscar nomination…

First, the noise, Ater a decade of restrained, subtle excellence, Ruth Negga is suddenly everywhere. She appeared gamine-iconic on the front of the January issue of American Vogue, photographed by Mario Testino, a huge deal for a little-known, 35-year-old Ethiopian-Irish actor. Now she's on the cover of another fashion bible, W, which shows her and Natalie Portman leaning in, seemingly a moment before kissing. "A rare, powerful talent," Portman called Negga.

At the Golden Globes, Negga headed those silly best-dressed lists, wearing a Louis Vuitton gown made from thousands of hand-sewn gold and silver paillettes. More satisfying for her was being name-checked that evening by Meryl Streep in her excoriating, Trump-skewering defence of diversity in Hollywood, which is coming up for 9m views on YouTube.

Denial review – tense, real-life courtroom drama

Posted: 29 Jan 2017 12:00 AM PST

Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall star in this dramatisation of the libel case between historian Deborah Lipstadt and Holocaust denier David Irving

A courtroom drama about the libel case brought by Hitler apologist David Irving (Timothy Spall, effectively repellent) against historian Deborah Lipstadt after she described him as a "Holocaust denier", Denial couldn't be more timely. It's a film that is tailor-made for an era in which politicians glibly spout "alternative facts" if the truth doesn't suit them. It's also rather disheartening, as it reveals just how labyrinthine and time-consuming the process of legally unpicking these falsehoods is.

Rachel Weisz brings a barrelling energy to her performance as the academic who finds herself in the unaccustomed and decidedly uncomfortable position of having to let her legal team fight her battle for her. Andrew Scott and Tom Wilkinson play solicitor Anthony Julius and barrister Richard Rampton respectively. It's an unconventional dynamic for a courtroom drama – Lipstadt's team refuses to call her as a witness so the principal character is mute throughout the key scenes. However, David Hare's measured screenplay makes a virtue of this. Lipstadt's caged intellect snaps at the hands of everyone who approaches, even those on her side.

In politics, great things do come out of America

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 11:00 PM PST

The Politico website was a great US innovation, and in turbulent times, its European version is just what this continent needs

A mid-term report on success. Ten years ago the world of American political coverage changed. A couple of Washington Post reporters and an enthusiastic millionaire launched Politico, a website (plus print version) that treated the White House, Capitol Hill and the government of 50 states as a specialist subject to be covered in relentless depth. (Compare Bloomberg and Thomson-Reuters in financial reporting mode.)

Two years ago this spring the world of European political reporting also changed as, in partnership with Axel Springer, Politico Europe opened for business. Only last week there was a new surge of appointments there, covering energy policy, agriculture, financial services, the European Central Bank and more.

Happy times.

Two nights on Milo Yiannopoulos's campus tour: as offensive as you'd imagine

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 08:24 AM PST

Abigail Edge followed the notorious online troll's speaking tour to two campuses in Colorado and found plenty of protests, supporters and hateful rhetoric

Around a dozen police in riot gear line the entrance to the mathematics building at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Inside, professional hatemonger Milo Yiannopoulos is addressing an audience of around 400 people, peppered with bright red baseball caps. Outside, a restless crowd of 200 protesters are holding signs and chanting anti-Trump slogans, their breath rising amid freezing temperatures – cold enough to make your cellphone cut out. A roar rises up from the crowd, followed by the smell of smoke. The smouldering remains of a red "Make America Great Again" hat hit the ground.

"What I'm scared about is the normalization of fascism, and what I'd regard as fascist values like racism and sexism," says Charles Wofford, a 28-year-old graduate student who has come to protest the event.

Donald Trump's first week: carnage, both real and imagined | Tom McCarthy

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 07:38 AM PST

What started with an ominous inauguration speech has ended with executive orders on everything from immigration to banning refugees and reigniting the fossil fuel industry. What does it mean for his presidency?

The crowd was small, the weather was bad and the speech, which described "American carnage", was dire. For the tens of millions who voted against him and countless concerned others, Donald Trump's inauguration as president of the United States felt ominous, no matter how widely Barack Obama smiled and no matter how gracefully he and Michelle Obama made the transition from hosts to departing guests.

The feeling of foreboding did not last. It was overtaken within hours by the realization, at the arrival of the first of the new president's executive actions, that the most outrageous campaign promises Trump had made to the smallest core of his supporters were now official US policy, or about to be.
