Austrians celebrate far right defeat: 'the first good election result this year' Posted: 05 Dec 2016 11:00 PM PST Voters celebrate after Norbert Hofer is defeated in the country's presidential elections, but warn that populist forces may yet gain ground Despite a year of often bitter campaigning, Austrians turned out in significant numbers to reject the far-right candidate Norbert Hofer in a rerun of the country's presidential elections. For those worried about Europe's turn towards populist rightwing forces, Austria's election outcome was heartening. Alexander van der Bellen, the left-leaning, pro-Europe moderate, won by about 3% more of the vote than he did in May's annulled election. But according to Austrian voters who responded to a Guardian callout, despite Van der Bellen sweeping to victory, the outcome does not signal an end to the threat from far-right forces. Posted: 06 Dec 2016 01:25 AM PST Rolling coverage of all the day's political developments as they happen
Philip Hammond, the chancellor, has arrived in Brussels for a meeting of EU finance ministers and, in a doorstep with journalists on his way in, he said that Britain wanted "as much flexibility as possible" in its Brexit negotiating position. He told reporters: What we've said is that we want to keep as many options open as possible so that we go into these negotiations with as much flexibility as possible, recognising that they will be complex, they will be lengthy, and we want to be able to negotiate in good faith with our European partners to see if we can find a way of working together in the future that benefits both sides. What [Davis] said was that we would not rule out the possibility of some ongoing contribution in some form if we have an ongoing relationship. And that will be something that we have to look at, looking at the costs and looking at the benefits and making a decision based on what's in the best interests of the British taxpayer. Bringing up the bodies in Bosnia | Ed Vulliamy Posted: 05 Dec 2016 10:00 PM PST In Bosnia, a UN organisation is digging up mass graves and using cutting edge scientific research to give victims' families some sense of closure and justice They are the unquiet dead. Laid out in rows inside a former industrial building on the edge of the Bosnian town of Sanski Most. Some of the skeletons are almost complete, others just a pelvic bone and some assorted ribs, arranged as though to await the arrival of more. This place was used to process wood before Bosnia's war of the early 1990s, and now it processes – it endeavours to assemble – the dead. The remains are laid out on raised trays, and at the foot of each lies possessions found with the body when it was exhumed, invariably from a mass grave. So to walk through this hall of death is also to walk through these people's lives and last moments. A pair of trainers here, a checked shirt there, a watch or wallet. What made this person choose a yellow sweater rather than another on a market rail, and chance to be wearing it when taken out to be murdered? Why striped socks beneath this half-assembly of bones, plain ones to accompany the next? Who were these people? Continue reading... |
