Since you're here, we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever – but far fewer are paying for it, and advertising revenues are falling fast. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian's journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe that independent reporting and plurality of voices matter. If everyone who reads our reporting helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

"Italy has to continue the path that Prime Minister Renzi has taken economically and politically", Reuters quoted Schäuble as saying. #Schäuble: "Continuare con politiche economiche Renzi. UN makes biggest ever aid appeal amid fears of compassion fatigue Posted: 04 Dec 2016 06:39 AM PST Growing number – and scale – of crises around the world is not matched by countries' will to tackle them, experts warn The United Nations is expected to launch its biggest ever appeal for humanitarian funding amid growing fears that major donors no longer have the political will to address proliferating crises in Yemen, Syria, Nigeria and elsewhere. The annual appeal, to be launched on Monday against the backdrop of a struggling global economy, a rising tide of nationalist sentiment epitomised by politicians such as Donald Trump, and growing compassion fatigue, will seek to raise roughly $22bn (£17.4bn). Kiev apartment resident turns scruffy stairwell into a gilded palace Posted: 05 Dec 2016 12:00 AM PST Vladimir Chaika has spent years installing ornamental plaster mouldings and art reproductions in a Soviet-era block of flats From the outside, number 11A is a drab block of flats like any other in Troyeshina, a scruffy Kiev suburb of identikit Soviet-era housing. The entrance door is daubed with graffiti, the ground floor hallway dingy and depressing. But exit the lift between floors six and eight, however, and the contrast with the grey, snowy winter outside could not be greater. The stairwell has been plastered, gilded and ornamented so it resembles a Tsarist palace more than a Khrushchev-era block of flats. Set in gilded frames, reproductions of the Mona Lisa and other well-known portraits stare out. Cherubs and ornamental flowers adorn the ceiling; set amid the swirling plaster are colourful vistas of desert islands fringed with palm trees. Continue reading... |

The battle for Mosul stalls: 'we are fighting the devil himself' Posted: 04 Dec 2016 11:00 PM PST After quick early progress, the operation to retake Islamic State's last urban stronghold in Iraq is getting more difficult Heaving on a huge, scorched metal door and covered in engine oil, Sgt Hussein Mahmoud was deep into a morning's work. Twisted hulks of wrecked army vehicles sat incongruously in the coarse dust that was kicked up by still-moving trucks as they crept around Mosul's urban fringe. Two other soldiers with industrial wrenches joined in, trying in vain to dislodge the door from its hinges. "We need it for humvees that still work," said one of them. "We're under pressure to provide them with parts." |
Posted: 04 Dec 2016 11:00 PM PST The 'Argos security guard defeats dictator' headlines say little about Adama Barrow and the Gambia, and much about Britain's obsession with status On Friday 2 December, the small west African nation of the Gambia gave the world some hope which, in 2016, has often been in short supply. Election results announced that day revealed a shock win for Adama Barrow, bringing to an end the 22-year rule of president Yahya Jammeh, a man who once said he was prepared to rule for a billion years. History-making aside, what seems to fascinate the UK press most is the fact that the president-elect once worked as a security guard at Argos, a British retailer. On the surface this interesting titbit further heightens the sense of Barrow's rise from obscurity. But because what was essentially a student job (Barrow worked at Argos while studying) has dominated headlines from the Daily Mail to the Independent, an underlying condescension has become more apparent to me. Casey review raises alarm over social integration in the UK Posted: 05 Dec 2016 01:04 AM PST Study attacks attempts by governments to boost ethnic integration as 'saris, samosas and steel drums for the well-intentioned' Governments have failed for more than a decade to ensure that social integration in the UK has kept up with the "unprecedented pace and scale of immigration" and have allowed some local communities to become increasingly divided, a major review has found. At the end of a year-long study of community cohesion in Britain, Dame Louise Casey has branded ministerial attempts to boost integration of ethnic minorities as amounting to little more than "saris, samosas and steel drums for the already well-intentioned". What next for New Zealand? National party loses John Key's personal appeal Posted: 04 Dec 2016 11:17 PM PST A turbulent year for New Zealand has ended with the resignation of a popular leader. But this is not necessarily good news for the opposition, analysts say New Zealand's opposition parties will be thinking "all their Christmases have come at once" following the surprise resignation of prime minister John Key, whose personal popularity was their greatest obstacle to winning the 2017 election, analysts have said. They may be hoping to capitalise on a turbulent year for New Zealand, during which the privileged leader of the National party was increasingly charged with being "out of touch" with middle New Zealand – traditionally his strongest support base. The first, which occurred without warning on 17 July, sent 60m cubic metres (24,000 olympic swimming pools) of ice and rock tearing down a narrow valley in Rutog county, killing nine herders and hundreds of sheep and yaks. Victory for Van der Bellen and the left is a sigh of relief for Europe Posted: 04 Dec 2016 11:39 AM PST The leftist's win was hailed as the 'liberal pushback' against Brexit and Trump, but 46% voted for the far-right Norbert Hofer The sigh of relief that followed Alexander Van der Bellen's victory in Austria's rerun presidential election on Sunday could be heard all over Europe. After the twin traumas of Trump and Brexit, centrist parties, social democrats and liberals of all stripes had feared another triumph for the advancing forces of nativist populism represented by Van der Bellen's rival, the far-right Freedom party's Norbert Hofer. Instead, Europe and its much-battered political incarnation, the European Union, have won a reprieve – although probably temporary. And Austria has escaped the odium of being the first modern-day democracy to pick as its head of state a political extremist whose party traces its ideological roots back to the strident neo-Nazism of its best-known leader, the late Jörg Haider.
