Goma has only 11km of good roads and is blighted by poverty and violence, but the city's cycling club is going from strength to strength

A chain of Lycra-clad cyclists whizzes by the blue and white UN base tasked with keeping the peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Weaving in and out of traffic, competing with motorbike taxis, they overtake a lorry on its last legs, shuddering as it spews out a fog of black smoke. Concentrating hard on not hitting a speed-bump or pothole, the cyclists receive curious stares from men on chukudus, large wooden scooters used for transporting everything from building materials to sacks of vegetables.

Trump and China: fears that deal-making will consign human rights to political 'roadkill'

New US president could be preparing an extreme makeover of US–China ties that would ditch status quo and broker an audacious deal with Beijing

In the world according to Donald J Trump, China's leaders showed resolve in crushing the Tiananmen protests with rifles and tanks; Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement is somebody else's problem; and Hillary Clinton, who has spent two decades standing up to Beijing over forced abortions and the "shameless" persecution of feminists, is worthy of jail.

When Chinese human rights activists realised he was the new leader of the free world, they despaired.

Antoine Laurain: My country is the same as yours. Politicians have never been so unpopular

Posted: 15 Nov 2016 02:00 AM PST

The French author reveals the social and political developments that inspired his latest comic novel

Rhapsodie Française – or French Rhapsody – was thought up as a global novel about the state of France today. I live in the same era as you; the news I see in newspapers, on TV or on the internet is the same as it is for you. You can't always simply rely on make-believe to write a novel. Sometimes real life makes its way into the story – and from then on, it's your job to come to terms with that "real life" because, whether you like it or not, it's there.

I'm now into my 40s. I've always lived in France, I can speak of it as my country. In many ways, it is very similar to the country I remember as a child, and in others, very different. A lot has changed. Time has sped up and the world has become faster. The advent of the internet changed the game. Problems in far off countries have become ours. The economy is now global. It's rare to have a career for life in the same sector. More than half of all marriages end in divorce after just 10 years. You no longer meets girls in cafes, you make a profile on a dating app. Politicians, both on the left and the right, have never been more unpopular, while extremist and nationalist sentiment has never felt more pronounced. I'm not judging this era. I'm simply noting.

Moroccans claim you can identify someone as a true Marrakech local if they own a bicycle. The streets of this north African city were once full of ardent cyclists, but in recent decades they've been overtaken by scooters and cars that swarm the city's congested roads.

Now, French bike company Smoove, is trying to revive Marrakech's biking culture — and boost sustainable transport — by launching Africa's first fully functioning bike share scheme in the city. The launch coincided with the start of the COP22 climate conference in the city.

Murder in Burundi: the man who knew too much | Jessica Hatcher-Moore

How the killing of three elderly nuns set the country's leading human rights activist on a collision course with its most powerful general

On a Sunday afternoon in early September 2014, Sister Bernadetta Boggian drove into the compound of the Catholic convent where she lived in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, and called out to her fellow nuns. There was no sign of the other elderly sisters who lived in the convent, so Sister Bernadetta went to find Father Mario Pulcini, the head of the mission, to ask if he had seen them. He tried phoning them, but there was no reply. So they walked across the shady compound to the nuns' quarters, where they found the curtains drawn.

They knocked, and called out, but there was no answer. The priest was about to force open the door, but Sister Bernadetta walked around to a side entrance, which was unlocked. Inside she found a horrific scene. Sister Olga Raschietti was lying dead in her bedroom, blood pooling around her head. In the bedroom next door lay the body of Sister Lucia Pulici. Both women had been stabbed, and their throats slit.

US president must reassure allies but may privately coach his closest partner Angela Merkel on ways to keep Trump in line

Barack Obama spent the months before the US election denouncing Donald Trump as unfit for office. Now he must eat his words. When he makes his final visit to Europe this week, in what had been planned as a triumphant farewell tour, Obama's awkward job is to reassure nervous allies that a Trump presidency will not be as bad as they fear.

Don't call Clinton a weak candidate: it took decades of scheming to beat her

Years of Republican plots, an opponent deified by television, and FBI smears stood in her way – and she still won the popular vote by more than Kennedy did

Sometimes I think I have never seen anything as strong as Hillary Clinton. That doesn't mean that I like and admire everything about her. I'm not here to argue about who she is, just to note what she did. I watched her plow through opposition and attacks the like of which no other candidate has ever faced and still win the popular vote.
