But he also named Steve Bannon, the head of his campaign and of the far-right website Breitbart, as his "chief strategist and senior counselor".

The statement announcing Trump's decision named Bannon first, despite the vague title of his role. It said he and Priebus would work as "equal partners".

My journeys in Trumpland

Posted: 13 Nov 2016 03:00 AM PST

Two years on the campaign trail revealed an America forgotten in the bicoastal media bubble, leaving our writer unsurprised when Hillary Clinton was beaten

Sixty million Americans voted for Donald Trump, each for their own reasons. Some were simply angry or afraid. Others were bored, indifferent to all the outrage directed at their candidate, eager for change above all else. Many, undoubtedly, welcomed permission to vent dark feelings of resentment towards people not like them. All were alien to a coastal cognoscenti which decided long ago that this election was a foregone conclusion.

Under the commonly agreed rules by which presidential races are decided, it wasn't even close. Democrats clung to a consolation prize that although they lost almost all the key electoral battleground states on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton received 600,000 more votes overall because her supporters were concentrated in more populous cities. A less reassuring way of thinking about this is that Trump's supporters were more evenly distributed in the places that most closely reflected the nation's diverse political reality while Clinton's were huddled together in like-minded bubbles.

Congo on the brink of another civil war | Letters

Posted: 13 Nov 2016 10:34 AM PST

I read with interest your article (Democratic Republic of Congo 'faces civil war' if president fails to quit, 10 November). The Catholic church in the DRC has been involved in moderating negotiations between the electoral commission, the opposition and the president's political party. The church withdrew because the talks failed to be inclusive: many major opposition groups and civil society representatives were absent. Throughout, the Catholic church's Conference of Episcopal Bishops in Congo stood with the people and urged politicians to renegotiate to ensure that presidential elections are held as soon as possible and that the current president does not stand for a third term.

The church's shuttle diplomacy has borne some fruit. At the request of President Joseph Kabila, earlier this month the Catholic bishops re-started consultations to enable talks with opposition and civil society groups. The support over many years from the UK aid agency Cafod for church programmes of civil and political education, has been vital. Fifty people have died standing up for their democratic rights and hundreds have faced human rights abuses. Our deepest hope is that the current unrest won't descend into civil war: our country has seen enough bloodshed.

Unfinished bridge reveals broken state of North Korea's alliance with China

It was a £250m project to strengthen China's bond with its isolated neighbour. But two years on from its expected completion, the bridge joining Dandong and Sinuiju remains unfinished: an emblem of an uneasy alliance gone sour

From Dandong, the largest Chinese city on the border with North Korea, it's just a short hop to the Hermit Kingdom – or rather, a short swim. In summer, bronzed Chinese bathers wade into the Yalu River and paddle 400 metres to the opposite bank, where armed North Korean soldiers watch from turquoise guard towers over women washing clothes along the muddy bank. The North Koreans don't dare swim.

"There are North Korean soldiers hiding in the long grass," says one elderly Chinese woman swimming by the bank. "They will catch you and charge a ransom if you get too close."
