'Already broken': US election unlikely to change relations with Russia

Expects say little prospect for improvement, regardless of whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump wins

After four years in which the Kremlin loomed large over US politics, the topics of collusion, Russian meddling or Ukrainian scandals have been largely absent from the campaign agenda as election day draws close.

It may be that Moscow still intends to interfere: the FBI director Christopher Wray said last month that the bureau has seen "very active efforts by the Russians to influence our election in 2020" – mainly involving misinformation with the primary goal of denigrating Joe Biden. And the US indictment of six Russian military intelligence hackers last week served as a reminder of the potential threat.

UK coronavirus live: calls grow for UK-wide lockdown as death toll rises

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 02:35 AM PDT

Latest updates: further 367 Covid-19 deaths confirmed on Tuesday, highest number since May, as hospitals cancel non-urgent operations

Airedale Hospital in West Yorkshire has become the latest hospital to say it is suspending non-urgent surgery for two weeks.

It said in a statement: "We are seeing increasing demand on the hospital which is in turn meaning that our inpatient beds are at capacity.

We are seeing a high demand for our hospital services & our inpatient beds are at capacity. We are therefore postponing any operations that need an overnight stay apart from urgent and cancer surgery. We do apologise to everyone affected by this https://t.co/09jb3SxTIb

Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth said the government's failure to use the school half-term for a circuit-breaker lockdown means they now need to "do something quickly to save Christmas".

Ashworth said ministers had "lost a window of opportunity" for a national lockdown over the holidays, which its scientific advisers and Labour had been requesting for "two weeks or so".

That's in the hands of all of us, and in the hands of the decisions it (the government) makes in the next week or so about what they're going to do to get on top of this virus.

"I think because they've missed this window of opportunity over the half term, I'm worried now that what we'll see is deeper, more drastic lockdown action over November and December, which sadly probably does put Christmas at risk.

If Biden wins what would the first 100 days of his presidency look like?

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:27 AM PDT

If he succeeds in defeating Donald Trump, the Democrat will have to urgently tackle the coronavirus pandemic as well as rebuild global relationships

If Joe Biden wins the 2020 US election against Donald Trump next week, the new president-elect will face enormous pressures to implement a laundry list of priorities on a range of issues from foreign policy to the climate crisis, reversing many of the stark changes implemented by his predecessor.

But Biden's first and most pressing task for his first 100 days in the White House would be to roll out a new nationwide plan to fight the coronavirus crisis, which has claimed more than 220,000 lives in the US and infected millions – more than any other country in the world – as well as taking steps to fix the disastrous economic fallout.

The architect of Donald Trump's hardline immigration policy, senior adviser Stephen Miller, is said to have a drawer full of executive orders ready to be signed in "shock and awe" style if Trump is re-elected.

The former homeland security department chief of staff, Miles Taylor, said this wishlist was reserved for the second term because it included policies that were too unpopular for a president seeking re-election.

Amy Coney Barrett’s appointment is a wake-up call for women voters | Cecile Richards

Posted: 27 Oct 2020 03:17 AM PDT

It's not only Roe v Wade on the line. Parental leave, affordable childcare, equal pay, the Affordable Care Act - all are under threat

The pandemic and its collateral economic crisis have illustrated like never before that women are the backbone of America. Before Covid-19, women made up more than half the workforce, nearly two-thirds of minimum-wage workers, and the majority of caregivers. One in three jobs held by women has been designated as essential. Right now, millions of women are pulling off an impossible balancing act: working while trying to keep their families safe and healthy during a terrifying time. Others have lost jobs, have had their wages or hours cut, and more than 800,000 women have left the workforce.

This crisis is disproportionately burdening women, especially women of color. They need immediate relief, but instead of solving this crisis, Donald Trump and Senate Republicans have focused on one thing: pushing through a supreme court nominee who wants to take away healthcare for millions and strip away rights women have had for decades. And they're doing it against the will of the majority of Americans, who believe that voters should decide who makes the next appointment to the court.

‘Apologise!’: Rudy Giuliani reacts angrily to questioning in Fox interview fiasco – video

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 02:11 AM PDT

Rudy Giuliani, the personal attorney to Donald Trump and former mayor of New York city, has been involved in a tense interview on the Fox Business channel during which he threatened to storm out.

Recently embarrassed by his appearance in a compromising scene the new Borat movie, Giuliani was being pressed on the provenance of stories about what is claimed to be Hunter Biden's laptop.

Host Lisa Kennedy Montgomery suggested that the stories emanating from the 'found' laptop and reported by the New York Post were similar to the kind of broad smear that the famed Christopher Steele dossier makes about the president. This angered Giuliani, who said 'You better apologize for that!'

Emails purporting to come from the laptop make the suggestion that a Ukrainian business partner contacted Hunter Biden about setting up a meeting with his father, the Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden. The laptop and emails have not been independently verified, and the New York Post is yet to produce any evidence that Hunter replied to the email, or that any meeting took place

'This is war': opposition politicians in Poland take abortion protests to parliament – video

Opposition politicians brought protests over a near-total ban on abortion in Poland to the floor of parliament.

Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, from the opposition Lewica (Left) party, led a protest of other opposition members wearing masks and T-shirts bearing the lightning bolt symbol of the 'Women's Strike' movement, which has been leading nationwide protests on the abortion ban.

There have been protests across Poland after a court ruling said abortion due to foetal abnormalities, for which the majority of legal abortions are performed in Poland, was unconstitutional.

Video shows riot police in Minsk bursting into an apartment in the city searching for protesters who had been seeking refuge after officers used stun grenades at a rally against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, who continues to hold on to power despite two months of mass protests since he declared victory in the presidential election in August.

The footage, filmed on Sunday and later posted to social media, shows a policeman using a baton to beat a man who was draped with the pre-Soviet red-and-white flag, the symbol adopted by the opposition.
