Iran admits 'unintentionally' shooting down Ukrainian airliner

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 02:45 AM PST

'Human error' blamed as admission comes after initial denials were contradicted by western allies' intelligence

Iran has admitted that its military made an "unforgivable mistake" in unintentionally shooting down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 people onboard, after days of rejecting western intelligence reports that pointed to Tehran being responsible.

A military statement early on Saturday via state TV blamed "human error" for the downing of Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 on Wednesday in the tense aftermath of strikes on US targets. It was followed by an apology from Iran's president and condolences from supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The man who used a narwhal tusk to tackle the London Bridge terrorist Usman Khan has accused Donald Trump of "feeding terror" with his belligerent Middle East policy, warning it will breed more murderous attackers like the one he and others faced.

In his first interview since Khan killed two people and injured several more at a criminal justice conference on 29 November, Darryn Frost said the US president's decision to assassinate General Qassem Suleimani would cost lives and added: "The next generation of terrorists will rise as a direct result of these actions and we must condemn them now."

Harry and Meghan could face fight to protect 'Sussex Royal' brand

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 02:42 AM PST

Pair may have to file objection after EU trademark application is apparently made from Italy

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex face having to potentially make an objection to protect their would-be brand "Sussex Royal" after an application was lodged with EU authorities to trademark a range of goods including beer and jewellery.

In what may be the latest attempt to either squat on or protect the couple's brand, it was lodged on Thursday by an applicant who appears to be based in Italy and filed it in German, with English listed as a second language. Database searches suggest it was made in the name of Ui Phoenix Kerbl, possibly after the Guardian reported on Thursday that the Sussexes had yet to register their brand outside of the UK.

House speaker says she plans next week to transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate, which will trigger Trump's trial there

An impeachment trial against Donald Trump will be set in motion in the Senate next week, according to a letter sent on Friday by the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to colleagues.

A two-thirds majority of senators voting to convict Trump on either of two articles of impeachment would result in his removal from office, although that is considered a long shot given the Republicans' firm control of the Senate.

Award-winning brewery start-up helps ex-addicts and other 'unemployables' change gear

Building a brewery in an area once notorious for alcohol-fuelled riots may not seem like the most sensible idea. But Derailleur Brew Works, a craft brewery in the Japanese city of Osaka, is helping transform this unfashionable district with the help of men and women who once thought they were unemployable.

The brewery grew out of Cyclo, a nursing-care provider based in Nishinari, a deprived ward of Osaka long associated with day labourers, dosshouses and social unrest.

My grandfather's whole family were murdered – but he found a way to forgive the killers

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 02:00 AM PST

After 12 of his relatives were killed in a single night, where was his anger and pain? And what does his refusal to permit himself these feelings mean for me?

I don't know when I first heard my grandfather's story. But I do remember the little green book with the white cross on it. The book was kept in a black steel cabinet in our living room, one that was usually locked, its contents mysterious. There must be important things in there, I thought, that were not for me to see.

My paternal grandparents were part of my childhood; my sister and I called them Oma and Opa and paid them regular visits, but we knew very little about our mother's parents. They were long dead: my grandmother in 1972, my grandfather in 1979, six years before my birth. The only proof of their existence was a faded black-and-white photo embedded in a glass hemisphere, which my mother kept on her bedside table. In the picture, my grandmother is wearing a high-necked dress and a pearl necklace, and my grandfather a suit and tie, their faces radiating severity. They looked, to my child's eyes, the way I imagined people from the olden days did; they were from a different world, a different time. I knew my grandmother had been a nurse, and my grandfather a pharmacist, and that they had run a retirement home together near Bremen in Germany. We never visited their grave.

Tehran says its military 'unintentionally' shot down Ukraine International Airlines flight 752, killing all 176 people onboard

A thread here by Reza Khaasteh, a journalist with Iran Front Page news, translates in more detail the statements by Revolutionary Guards General Amir Ali Hajizadeh in a press conference in which he admits his unit's responsibility for shooting down UIA 752.

IRGC Aerospace Cmdr: I wish I was dead and such an incident hadn't happened. We in IRGC accept all the responsibility, and are ready to implement any decision made by the Establishment#IranPlaneCrash https://t.co/YmvgvgCvyp

IRGC Aerospace Cmdr: I was in the country's west following attacks on US base in Iraq when I heard the news. We sacrificed our lives for our people for a lifetime, and now we're trading our reputation with God (disgracing ourselves) and appear in front of the camera to explain.

IRGC Aerospace Cmdr says we had requested the establishment of a no-fly zone given the war situation. But it was not approved for certain considerations

Revision: IRGC Aerospace Cmdr says Air Defence operator sent a message to his commanders; but after he didn't receive any response for 10 seconds, he decided to shoot it down

The head of the aerospace division of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has said he wishes he could die, as his unit accepted responsibility for shooting down UIA 752.

"I wish I could die and not witness such an accident," General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said in a video posted online by Iranian state TV on Saturday.

Murchison Falls is a magnet for tourism but energy projects, not least a possible dam, threaten the wildlife haven

Along the road that takes you into Murchison Falls national park, animals once roamed freely. Narrow roads provided the perfect environment for them, so "they [didn't] feel like they are in a foreign land", says tour operator Everest Kayondo.

But not any more. The park's lush forest is being uprooted and red trucks and yellow diggers stand ready to pave the road – and the way for new energy projects.

How to dump Trump: Rick Wilson on Running Against the Devil

He was a Republican ad man but now he's a bestselling author out to bring down a president. He says Democrats must listen

Democratic voters should read Rick Wilson's new book, he says, and heed his advice about how to beat Donald Trump.

Why? "Unless your candidate is a generational superstar like Barack Obama or Bill Clinton" – and it's not a push to say there is no such Democrat this year – "we know all the tricks to beating them and we've used them over and over again."

This liveblog is now closed

We will leave our coverage of the ongoing bushfire crisis here for the night. A mercifully quiet day on firegrounds across the country.

Here is where things stand:

We have a bit more information about the man who was burned while defending his property near Tumbarumba in New South Wales yesterday.

The man was an RFS volunteer, but he was not engaged in RFS work yesterday. Instead, Guardian Australia understands, he was driving a quad bike around his own property defending against spot fires when he received burns to his leg.

Pacific nations need much more than Scott Morrison's thanks to survive | Kate Lyons

Governments from across the Pacific have offered support for bushfire relief but are in a tight spot with Australia over the climate crisis

When Scott Morrison thanked governments of the world for their assistance with Australia's bushfire crisis, he particularly singled out "the loving response from our Pacific family".

Across the Pacific region – a collection of developing and least developed nations that are themselves almost uniquely at risk from climate-induced catastrophes – the response to the Australian bushfires has been immediate and generous, but it also reveals something of the problematic fraternity that Australia has with the rest of the region.

Pompeo has sealed his spot as 'Trump's whisperer' with his mission to beat Iran

Posted: 10 Jan 2020 01:31 PM PST

The strike on Suleimani represented a significant victory for Pompeo, his outsize influence on Trump and his Iran fixation

When the US embassy in Baghdad was mobbed on the last day of 2019, a rattled Donald Trump turned to his most hawkish aide, Mike Pompeo, and finally agreed to the extreme measure the secretary of state had long advocated: the assassination of Qassem Suleimani.

The drone strike on the Iranian general a week ago may well turn out to be one of the most consequential decisions of the Trump presidency. It represented a significant victory for Pompeo, reflecting his ascendancy in foreign policy and national security spheres.
