The recordings, both deliberate and accidentally invoked activations of the voice assistant, as well as some Skype phone calls, were simply accessed by Microsoft workers through a web app running in Google's Chrome browser, on their personal laptops, over the Chinese internet, according to the contractor. Is Kristen Stewart too good for big-budget blockbusters? Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:15 PM PST The Twilight lead turned arthouse mainstay is delving back into the mainstream yet again with $80m monster movie Underwater but it's another awkward fit There are two sorts of movie stars, and the demands of the market are such that the first type must occasionally pretend to be the second type. The first type is the critical darling, accomplished thespians who command crowds of screaming admirers at Cannes even though they may not be household names. They appear in glowingly reviewed indies and attract the attention of international auteurs, regularly landing on year-end best-of lists and awards lineups. They inspire rapturous reviews filled with flowery prose about nuance and subtlety, the exquisite artistry of the acting craft, et cetera. Brazil helped the US and Iran towards peace. Dialogue is the only answer | Lula and Celso Amorim Posted: 10 Jan 2020 02:30 AM PST As president and foreign minister, we always advocated peace. In war, all victories are pyrrhic ones The assassination of Qassem Suleimani by drone bombs, at the express request of the president of the United States, has thrown the Middle East – and the world – into the most serious global security crisis since the end of the cold war. By unilaterally ordering the execution of a senior Iranian military on Iraqi soil, Donald Trump violated international law and took a reckless and dangerous step in escalating conflict, with potential impact all over the planet. Britain must spearhead action against sexual violence or relinquish the reins Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:05 AM PST Only with senior government backing can the inertia gripping the global fight against sexual abuse in conflict be arrested Rape and other forms of sexual violence in conflict are deliberate crimes against humanity, employed as a tactic of war and terrorism to systematically brutalise entire populations. They are entirely preventable, which is why I launched the preventing sexual violence in conflict initiative (PSVI) in 2012 with UNHCR special envoy Angelina Jolie. From the start, we emphasised the crucial importance of addressing impunity. Without a realistic chance of justice being done, potential perpetrators of these crimes are unlikely to be deterred and the cycle of violence will continue. Continue reading... |
New year health kicks are great – but your environment is also vital | Dr Robert Wright Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:00 PM PST Understanding how environment impacts health will empower us to make the lifestyle changes that matter most, from what foods to buy to fragrances to avoid Exercising and eating better as part of our new year health kicks are great, but we should also think more deeply about the role the environment plays on our health. As a professor of environmental medicine, I believe this is an exciting new area of study that will play a big part in the future of personalized medicine. Consider this, every day we are bombarded with messages: genes that cause cancer, supplements that prevent Alzheimer's disease, diets that prevent asthma, chemicals that make us gain weight. But while headlines frequently proclaim "game changing" new findings, over the last 20 years in the US and Europe our health status as a population has seriously deteriorated. Rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and learning disorders continue to rise. Genetic variation may be part of the puzzle that explains why we get sick, but clearly there are missing pieces. Continue reading... |

China's Sars-like illness worries health experts Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST China's viral pneumonia outbreak may have jumped species barrier, raising fears of pandemic The finding that the outbreak of viral pneumonia in China that has struck 59 people may be caused by a coronavirus, the family of viruses behind Sars, which spread to 37 countries in 2003, causing global panic and killing more than 750 people, means that health authorities will be watching closely. China says the illness is not Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome), nor Mers (Middle East respiratory syndrome), both of which are caused by coronaviruses, and so far it appears milder than both. Unlike Sars, it does not appear to spread easily between humans and unlike Mers, which has a mortality rate of about 35%, nobody has died. Continue reading... |
