Kickstarter: startupland: a documentary series

Full Series Launched!

Posted: 19 Sep 2014 09:33 AM PDT

Almost exactly two years ago, Jonathon Perrelli turned to me and uttered the phrase, "Wouldn't it be cool if there were a reality show inside of an accelerator?"

I promptly responded, "Nope, but an authentic documentary would be." He wholeheartedly agreed, and our journey began. Over the next two years, the scope and even the format shifted and changed, but we never lost sight of our purposes and mission….to tell an authentic story of entrepreneurship that would inspire and educate globally.

Over the past few months, startupland has been screened in over 60 cities around the world including Dubai, Bangalore, Kigali and many more! You can see a more complete list here.

Today, the entire series becomes available to stream and download worldwide. Our team continues to pour everything we have into bringing this idea to life.

Here's how you can help be a part of this exciting moment in startupland:

1. Watch startupland here: vhx.startupland.tv

 2. Schedule a screening in your community: Contact us to find out how.

 3. Review the series: If you have already watched, feel free to give us 10 stars on IMDB!

 4. Learn about the curriculum: An original curriculum for universities is being developed to accompany the series. Contact us to learn more about it.

 5. Spread the word! Click this link to tweet about the series and click this link to share on Facebook

We thank your for your support, and hope you enjoy watching this series.

Cheers!

Trailer Release & Global Premiere Announcement

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 07:24 PM PDT

We are excited to announce that the feature trailer is now ready for viewing. Outside of the crew, you are the first to know, we hope you enjoy it. View the trailer at our website HERE.

Within the trailer, you will also hear the startupland theme song, written and recorded by Andy Fry and Emily Watkins, with an entire soundtrack on its way! You will also see the motion graphics produced by Intellectric Productions, who have been busy bringing our graphics to life. You will see that startupland has come a long way from our original Kickstarter trailer!

The Global Premiere in Washington, DC is now booked for Thursday, March 13th at 7:30PM and will be at the Landmark E-Street Theater. If the reward tier you backed included tickets, be on the lookout for an email from maxim@startupland.tv. If you would like to attend the later showing on the same evening, tickets are available HERE

*Because startupland is a series, rather than a traditional film, the premiere will screen the first two episodes in sequence, and will also include conversations and Q&A with the production team.*

We will continue to keep you updated as we get closer, and as we release more content. We are still waiting on some survey responses for rewards fulfillment, so if you missed the first shipment round, please get back to us ASAP.

We can't wait to see you at the premiere, and for you to see the complete series when we release it. When the entire series is released, we will be sending download codes for access to the series.

The Latest from Startupland

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 07:24 PM PDT

Sorry we've been "off-the-grid" recently - we've got plenty of exciting things to get you all caught up on.

(Before we get into the updates: if you haven't yet received your Kickstarter rewards or you haven't filled out the survey, please email us directly at Maxim@Startupland.tv to get everything figured out.)

Now to the good stuff!

We have now launched the new website which is being tuned up and improved as we speak, you can find it at www.Startupland.tv (we will be adding to it constantly).

We've added two very talented musicians to our team: Andy Fry and Emily Watkins, formerly of "Margot and the Nuclear So & So's" who are writing, producing, and recording a complete soundtrack for Startupland. We are thrilled about this, and look forward to sharing the songs with you when they are ready.

We have also added an ex-Pixar animator to our team to work with us on developing incredible infographics that will be incorporated into the series.

We've also been working with two incredible organizations in the startup world who will now be official partners: UP Global and Startup Weekend. We are working right now to get partnerships in place with other entrepreneurial organizations across the country, including some well-known universities!

As we get ever closer to the premiere and launch, the Startupland network grows — we can't say it enough: this started with all of you. The premiere will be in the DC area, and we are shooting for a late-March/early-April date (dependent on venues and logistics.) We hope to have everything confirmed soon though, so we can get details to you. We will get information to you the second it is confirmed!

Justin has been busy editing and wrapping up final interviews. We have now shot over 240 hours of footage, which Justin is now busy distilling into the episodes that you will be seeing in the next few months.

We are also adding a few new interviews with some exciting individuals, that we will announce shortly!

As we get closer we will do our best to keep the updates more frequent, thanks for your patience, and thanks for your support. We couldn't have got where we are without all of you on our team, and we are certain that you will be proud to see the final product (which we cannot wait to show you all!)

Rewards Shipped! (Mostly) + Updates and News

The first round of shirts and stickers are now out and on their way, some of you may already have them. (Posters and Tickets coming later)

We are excited to say that packages went out far beyond the U.S. and include Australia, Spain, Italy, England, Malaysia, Singapore, and Columbia! Wherever you are, we'd love for you to snap a picture of your Startupland sticker somewhere meaningful to you to share with us and via your social networks (here is one we loved from Italy!)

Above is a one of a kind test shirt that we received from Steve and Full Color Prints in Centreville, VA who hand crafted the printing of each shirt. We now have it framed in the director's editing room as a constant reminder that you all got us here.

Here's one of our beloved backers and Producers wearing her shirt:

Johanna Wilson is the CEO of OpenPath Products in Annapolis, MD where she and her team rock mobile development and testing.

We would love to feature more of you - so do send in your photos.

The journey is FAR from over though, we have been busy filming interviews including founders of AOL, Reddit, Eventbrite, Living Social, Blackboard, VHX, and MapQuest, just to name a few.

We are also nearing final development for the Startupland.tv website, which we are pretty sure will knock your socks off. Keep an eye out for it towards the end of December.

Also on their way shortly are the posters (which have been sent to the printer), where you will likely find yourself featured somewhere. This poster is a one time only print, and we hope that you proudly display it somewhere to show it off. Hey, how many Kickstarter backers get featured on a limited edition film poster?

The tour plans are also shaping up and will be shared after the new year. We will start to visit cities across the country this coming Spring and we will keep you posted with details on dates and locations. You will be able to track the Startupland tour through our website once it's live.

Help us spread the word and share the love - Startupland continues to grow and we are absolutely certain that our message of inspiration and empowerment will reach people all across the globe to pursue their dreams!

Thanks everybody, and we will continue to update you more frequently as we get closer and closer!

Bora Bora and More-a

Posted: 25 Sep 2013 09:31 AM PDT

Sorry for the delay on updates! Following the Kickstarter campaign success, the whole team just got back from our celebratory trip to Bora Bora. JUST KIDDING, we've actually been incredibly busy getting things rolling; we've expanded the team, we are getting ready to speak and present Startupland at conferences, and filming the final interviews. In fact, we have exciting news, as we are getting ready to interview Steve Case (founder of AOL and Revolution Ventures) just this afternoon. We have also added Esther Dyson (Angel Investor and WSJ analyst) and just interviewed Michael Chasen (Blackboard and SocialRadar).

We have nearly finalized details for the premiere and the tour, with first stop being in our hometown of DC in February. Some of you got tickets for this premiere, and we are excited to see you there! We are also signing up city- and national-sponsors to help support and promote the tour!

Thanks again for all of your support - we couldn't do it without you.

You are all amazing. I am humbled and thrilled that you believe in the startupland project. I have a large vision, and now it's time to execute. I couldn't have done this without each and every one of you.
