'We are successfully holding back the enemy,' says Ukraine's leader amid fierce fighting around the city

Russian troops continued to press their offensive against Kyiv as well as other cities across Ukraine on Saturday, as residents sought shelter in the capital's metro system and in basements during a third day of fierce bombardment.

As Russian strikes continued to pound Kyiv, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, refused a US offer to evacuate, insisting he would stay. "The fight is here," he said as street fighting continued, largely around the edges of the city.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy stands defiant in face of Russian attack

Analysis: Ukraine's president has won over critics with his courage and resilience as his country fights for survival

He looked gaunt and unshaven after another sleepless night under Russian attack and bombardment. But Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, struck a defiant tone in a video address on Saturday morning. "I'm here," he said simply. And he was – in the centre of Kyiv, three days on from Vladimir Putin's invasion, unbowed and going nowhere.

"Good morning everybody! Ukrainians: there's a lot of fake information online that I call on our army to lay down arms, and that there's an evacuation," he said. "I'm here. We won't lay down our arms. We will defend our state, our territory, our Ukraine, our children. That's all I have to say. Glory to Ukraine!"

A record number of more than 400 workers in England have left the NHS every week to restore their work-life balance over the last year, according to a new analysis of the workforce crisis hitting the health service.

The flood of departures comes with staff complaining of burnout and cases of post-traumatic stress disorder following two years of battling the Covid pandemic. There are now concerns that the exodus is impacting the quality of care, with more than a quarter of adults saying they or an immediate family member had received poor care as a result of the workforce problems.

What’s next for BBC news? Promise of freedom lures away more ‘big beasts’

The departures of Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel for Global, which operates LBC, are part of a wider talent drain as other broadcasters offer more independence

Oh!" said Emily Maitlis's jumper. You have a feeling that the producers of Newsnight might be saying something stronger. Last Tuesday a photo showed the jumpered-and-jeaned Newsnight lead presenter Maitlis alongside her fellow Americast host, BBC North American expert Jon Sopel (suit, no tie), in a radio studio. Nothing unusual there… except that behind them was a Global logo, instead of a BBC one. That was a surprise. And the tweet that accompanied the picture, announcing that Maitlis and Sopel are joining Global to host a new podcast and a show on LBC? Well, that was a complete shock. Not just to the public, but to BBC management. "Everyone was completely blindsided," says a BBC source. "It's a massive blow."

It is. Both Sopel and Maitlis are BBC "big beasts": high profile, highly experienced, strong personality-ed political journalists. Maitlis, best known for presenting the BBC's flagship news analysis show, Newsnight, has been a star for a while, but she became even more so when she pulled in the "no sweat" 2019 interview with Prince Andrew. Sopel was the BBC's well-respected North American editor for eight years, and considered to be one of the frontrunners for the BBC political editor job when Laura Kuenssberg steps down in April. Both had established a strong following for their Americast podcast, launched to cover the last US elections and continued afterwards, due to its popularity.

Miss the office? Michael Schur – master of the workplace sitcom – on why we should relish our return

Posted: 26 Feb 2022 04:30 AM PST

As we slowly rediscover a world of bad wifi and slow lifts, the US Office writer and creator of Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine explains why he can't wait to get back

One of the first things we knew back in early 2020 was that we wouldn't be going to work for a while. We thought that we would take a quick break – a week, maybe – and then reassess. So we cleaned out our cubicles and desks, and grabbed a few snacks from the kitchen (and toilet paper from the bathroom). One week became two, which became a month, which became a series of question marks spanning endlessly into the future, as the Zooms and FaceTimes and home office conversions gradually made the very idea of spending our workdays with other people seem like a quaint memory. Like childhood birthday parties, or answering machines, or properly functioning democracy.

Some of us might never go back. Every so often we will hear about companies reassessing their relationship to the office, which has been proved unnecessary or at least outdated.

'In 1987,' photographer Steven Ahlgren says, 'when I was bored and unfulfilled, working as a banker in Minneapolis, I began taking frequent trips to look at a painting by Edward Hopper, Office at Night. What first drew me was its setting, which I related to each and every workday at the bank. But what kept pulling me back was its ambiguous narrative – who were these two people, what was their relationship, and why was the woman looking at that piece of paper on the floor?'

The strange Republican world where the big lie lives on and Trump is fighting to save democracy

Posted: 26 Feb 2022 06:11 AM PST

Welcome to the the grassroots CPAC summit, where conservatives see themselves not as dismantlers of democracy, but as saviors

On stage in a hotel ballroom glowing red, white and blue, Ron DeSantis was recalling his days in Congress and a book he wrote about America's troubles. It was "read by about a dozen people," the Florida governor said with rare self-deprecation.

DeSantis then told a gathering of grassroots conservatives on Thursday: "I look back at that time, it almost seems a little quaint to me because the threats we face to freedom, the threats we face to a just society, are much more pervasive than they were just 10 years ago."

The model, 41, on his dangerous youth, micro-managed middle age, dancing with J-Lo and seeing giant pictures of his crotch in Times Square

My childhood, in Essex, was run-of-the-mill. My parents were grafters, starting businesses from home, and they were both very present in my life while also deeply committed to their jobs. It was instilled into me that nothing is earned unless you work for it.

How I avoided serious injury in my teens remains a mystery, given how stupid my friends and I were. We'd climb the steepest hills and descend on roller-skates passing busy junctions; as we got older, we drove cars too fast into hedges and fields. I had an appetite for risk until 27, when mortality became very real.

Boris Johnson’s promise to build 4,000 zero-emission buses makes zero progress

Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST

Only £320m of £4bn needed to build flagship vehicles for 'green transport revolution' has been committed by chancellor Rishi Sunak

One of Boris Johnson flagship "green" pledges – to provide 4,000 new zero-emission, British-built buses by the end of 2024 – has been cast into serious doubt by UK manufacturers who say they have yet to receive any orders for new vehicles.

MPs and campaigners are pressuring ministers for information on when money will be committed to allow the manufacture of the zero-emission buses, which the prime minister promised would form part of a green transport revolution in his first term in Downing Street. He made the pledge in February 2020, just before the Covid pandemic, when he was keen to promote his environmental credentials and show how green policies could benefit people's lives whileboosting British businesses.
