| Fossil fuel cars make 'hundreds of times' more waste than electric cars Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:00 PM PST Analysis by transport group says battery electric vehicles are superior to their petrol and diesel counterparts Fossil fuel cars waste hundreds of times more raw material than their battery electric equivalents, according to a study that adds to evidence that the move away from petrol and diesel cars will bring large net environmental benefits. Only about 30kg of raw material will be lost over the lifecycle of a lithium ion battery used in electric cars once recycling is taken into account, compared with 17,000 litres of oil, according to analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E) seen by the Guardian. A calculation of the resources used to make cars relative to their weight shows it is at least 300 times greater for oil-fuelled cars. Continue reading... |

| Other TV is available: did Netflix sweep the Golden Globes by default? Posted: 01 Mar 2021 01:20 AM PST The absence of I May Destroy You was the most memorable part of the small-screen awards, where voters had seemingly binged the biggest streaming hits – and little else It has always been hard to care about the Golden Globes, and God knows that it's difficult to rouse the enthusiasm to care about anything one year into a pandemic. So, in truth, last night's special pandemic edition of the Golden Globes – an entertainment awards show made in a year when most entertainment has either been cancelled or postponed – barely even deserves acknowledgment. In fact, if last night's show will be remembered for anything at all – which in all honesty seems like a stretch – then it will be the swirl of controversy that engulfed its nominations. In summary: when its shortlists were announced, the best TV show of the year (I May Destroy You) was nowhere to be seen. But the worst TV show of the year (Emily in Paris) was. It's also worth noting that many lavish treats were gifted to voters by the production a year ago. All that, plus it was just revealed that not a single black person participated in the voting process. Continue reading... |

Before they reported to police stations across the city to be detained, some sent messages to their supporters about justice, hope and endurance. Here are some of their messages, translated and compiled by independent researcher Eliot Chen: Continue reading... |

| Gilbert and George on their epic Covid artworks: 'This is an enormously sad time' Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:00 PM PST The artists have responded to the pandemic with comic, haunting works showing themselves being buffeted around a chaotic London. They talk about lines of coffins, illegal raves and 'shameful' statue-toppling As they call themselves living sculptures, I can't resist asking Gilbert and George what they think of all the statue-toppling that took place last year. When I ask for their verdict on the removal of public works that have been accused of celebrating slavery and colonialism, they are sceptical. "We would call that shameful behaviour," says George. "And it's very odd – because normally those statues are totally invisible. Nobody ever looks at them. I remember, very near my home town, there's a statue of Redvers Buller, the hero of the Boer war, surrounded by dying Zulus and things. And if you asked people in Exeter, 'Where's Buller's statue?', none of them knew. It's a bit silly. Rewriting history is very silly." Continue reading... |

| Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:30 AM PST The rapper's arrest shows Spain has a problem with freedom of ideology. But people shouldn't be scared to write songs that stand up to power The arrest of Pablo Hasél this month, a Spanish rapper – like me – who is accused of glorifying terrorism and insulting the monarchy in his lyrics, didn't surprise me. When I was 18, I wrote a song about the Spanish king, the police arrested me and I was sentenced to three and a half years in jail. The day they came to take me to prison, I fled to Belgium and have been here ever since, despite the best efforts of Spain to have me extradited. It seemed like a joke – almost four years in jail for a song. But it wasn't: there are 18 rappers in Spain facing jail for similar charges. Related: Angry words: rapper's jailing exposes Spain's free speech faultlines Continue reading... |

"PANDEMONIUM", wrote the New Zealand Herald from its first page. Aucklanders made a dash for the supermarkets, according to the same paper, cleaning out toilet paper supplies and gridlocking the city's major transport nodes. The government was advising national caution after barring travellers from China earlier that month and organising repatriation flights for New Zealanders through the next. Four weeks later, on 25 March 2020, the country went into a nationwide lockdown. Continue reading... |
