Freight company director blames new requirement for EU transport firms to provide VAT and tariff guarantees

A British freight company director with more than 20 years' experience has told how EU hauliers and transport companies are turning their backs on UK business because they are being asked to provide tens of thousands of pounds in guarantees to cover VAT or potential tariffs on arrival in Britain.

The financial guarantee requirement did not exist before Brexit and EU transport companies who previously provided a shipping service for small and medium-sized firms have decided they do not want the extra financial burden, according to Colin Jeffries, who runs Key Cargo International in Manchester.

Suzi Quatro: 'At 70, I zip up the jumpsuit and feel like me'

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:00 PM PST

As a bass-playing, leather-clad lead singer, Quatro paved the way for a new generation of female rock stars in the 70s. She talks about fending off predatory men, carrying a knife for protection and why she still wears her famous jumpsuit

Suzi Quatro is remembering a "pivotal moment". It was 1973, and the RAK Records boss, Mickie Most, asked her what she would like to wear to promote her wonderfully raucous single, Can the Can. "When I said leather, he said that was old-fashioned, but I stuck to my guns," she recalls. Most relented, sketching a jumpsuit inspired by Jane Fonda's character in the 1968 film Barbarella. "I went to the photo shoot in the jumpsuit and the photographer Gered Mankowitz said: 'Suzi, give me that Suzi Quatro look.' And all of a sudden, I had a look I didn't know I had. I swear to God I didn't know it was sexy until we got the photos back. He said: 'Come and look.' And I just went 'Oh …'"

Can the Can rocketed to No 1, followed by smashes such as 48 Crash and Devil Gate Drive , numerous Top of the Pops appearances and 55m record sales to date.

'Never conduct any business naked': how to work from bed without getting sacked

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:00 PM PST

From warming up your voice to avoiding spillages, here are some tips for keeping up professional appearances

I have been pretending not to be in bed while working for more than 20 years, but never got around to codifying my moves until lockdown, when they became useful to others. Before we drill down into specifics, there are some cardinal rules.

First, never let a work call be your first conversation of the day. Your voice is like your face: it takes a while to lose that distinctive, muffled squash of the pillow and oblivion. If you live with others, you can have a general "How did you sleep?" conversation, then an argument; this way you will use the full range of your voicebox, like an opera singer. If you live alone, call your mum or turn on the radio and shout at Nick Robinson – whichever you find the least draining.

Trump's useful thugs: how the Republican party offered a home to the Proud Boys

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:20 PM PST

Early in Trump's presidency, emboldened neo-Nazi and fascist groups came out into the open but were met with widespread revulsion. So the tactics of the far right changed, becoming more insidious – and much more successful

In March 2018, on a cold, grey Monday afternoon in East Lansing, Michigan, about 500 militant antifascists gathered in a car park with the intention of stopping Richard Spencer, the high-profile white nationalist, from speaking at Michigan State University (MSU). Spencer had not been asked to come by any student group on campus, but had instead invited himself. After the university denied his initial request to speak a few months earlier, Spencer sued. As part of the settlement agreement, Spencer agreed to speak in the middle of spring break at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, a venue more than a mile away from the main campus.

There in the parking lot, the antifascists kept one another warm, dancing to hardcore and hip-hop played over a wheeled-in guitar amplifier, sharing cigarettes and news from elsewhere. Some people talked about the leaked chat logs of the fascist gang Patriot Front, members of which were on their way to campus that very moment. Others discussed the arraignment of one of Spencer's followers the night before on weapons charges after he pulled a gun on protesters. About 40 police officers in riot gear huddled at the far end of the car park. Bike cops on patrol swirled by.

The Unusual Suspect by Ben Machell review – a modern-day Robin Hood?

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:30 PM PST

A splendid account of Stephen Jackley, whose bank robberies were an attempt to fight poverty and injustice

The homeless man sitting with his dog on a cold December night in Sidmouth must have thought it miraculous when a passing stranger dropped a roll of £20 banknotes in his hat. The stranger didn't stop or say anything, just walked away. Even odder, every note had been marked with two letters: RH. The stranger wasn't acting out of Christmas charity but from a sense of righteousness: he saw himself as a 21st-century Robin Hood, duty-bound to rob the rich and give to the poor. To which end, a few hours before, he'd held up the Lloyds TSB bank branch in nearby Seaton and made off with nearly £5,000.

A hard-up geography student at the University of Worcester, Stephen Jackley was the unlikeliest of bank robbers. It's not just that he wasn't out for personal gain (though he enjoyed using some of his winnings to travel). He also acted entirely alone, albeit after learning from the methods of illustrious peers such as the American Carl Gugasian, whose example taught him the importance of meticulous planning, physical disguise and how to escape and hide your loot in woodland areas. From his first, botched attempt to rob a bank in Exeter the police had a record of Jackley's DNA. But because he didn't graduate to bank robbery through petty thieving, they had no match for it on their files and assumed the culprit must be a foreigner, perhaps part of a criminal gang. Undetected, he continued towards his goal of raising £100,000 for what he called the Organisation, his one-man mission to save the planet from poverty and injustice.

A building as big as the world: the anarchist architects who foresaw rampant expansion

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:00 PM PST

Italy's Superstudio collective warned against rampant development by imagining one continuous structure stretching around Earth. But did their warning actually inspire new Saudi plans for a 100-mile linear city?

There was a sense of deja vu last week when Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, unveiled his plans for a futuristic 100-mile-long linear city, momentously titled The Line. The dramatic promotional video showed aerial views of a glowing urban ribbon cutting right across the country, forming a "belt of hyperconnected future communities" from sea to sea. It will be free from cars, he declared, powered by renewable energy and run by artificial intelligence, slicing straight through the Arabian desert in one continuous strip. As part of the country's $500bn Neom development, the plan was trumpeted as a "civilisational revolution that puts humans first"; but it had inescapable echoes of another project with a very different purpose.

Three thousand miles away, in a gallery in Brussels, hangs a 1960s photomontage of an eerily similar vision, part of a new exhibition about the radical Italian architecture collective Superstudio. A great white oblong is depicted cutting through a desert, slicing through sand dunes and marching past palm trees in an unbroken urban block, its surface inscribed with an endless square grid.

Biden inauguration: 46th president to start first full day in office – live reaction

Environmentalists may approve that Joe Biden is cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline, but the new administration is far from meeting every goal of campaigners, as Nina Lakhani reports for us – indigenous leaders urge Biden to shut down Dakota Access pipeline:

"The victory ending the KXL pipeline is an act of courage and restorative justice by the Biden administration. It gives tribes and Mother Earth a serious message of hope for future generations as we face the threat of climate change. It aligns Indigenous environmental knowledge with presidential priorities that benefit everyone," said Faith Spotted Eagle, founder of Brave Heart Society and a member of the Ihanktonwan Dakota nation.

And breathe: the world exhales as the madness of the Trump era ends | Jonathan Freedland

Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:19 PM PST

After four years in a heightened state of alert, many people the world over now hope that sanity will return

For four years the world had held its breath, but at last came the moment to exhale. Ever since noon on 20 January 2017, when Donald Trump took the oath that made him president of the United States, the people of the planet had found themselves in a state of heightened alert: what new madness might the most powerful man on earth unleash? Within months, he had seemed to threaten nuclear war with North Korea – in a tweet directed at Kim Jong-un, he boasted that "I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!" – and there were days when it seemed rational to wonder if America, and the rest of us, would even survive four years of a Trump presidency.

Eleven minutes before noon local time, it became possible to breathe out once more. Joe Biden recited the magical incantation by which a single US citizen is transformed into the head of government, head of state and symbol of the republic. As he uttered the words "So help me God," his hand on a thick Bible, a wave of blessed relief rippled through millions of Americans – and all those, anywhere, who had lived through the stress of the Trump era. The TV networks had helpfully shown footage of the military aide who carries the nuclear "football", the case containing the codes required to launch the mighty US atomic arsenal, and there was comfort in knowing that that aide now answered to Biden, not the man who a few hours earlier had fled to his resort in Florida.
