| Coronavirus symptoms: how to tell if you have a common cold, flu or Covid Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:58 AM PDT Fever, runny nose, headache? Lost your sense of taste or smell? Your guide to differentiating between the three illnesses With winter approaching, the UK is entering the traditional seasons for colds and flu, with the additional complication this year that symptoms of those two illnesses can be broadly similar to those experienced by people who have caught the coronavirus and may be at risk of spreading it. The NHS in England has produced online Covid-19 advice and a guide to differentiate between the three types of illnesses, which health experts hope will make it clearer to people whether they have an illness they would have most likely brushed aside last year, but which this year might lead them to think they need to self-isolate or seek to have a coronavirus test. | Coronavirus live news: global cases pass 40m; US cases rise in 48 states Posted: 19 Oct 2020 02:25 AM PDT Johns Hopkins figures show new landmark tally; Italy introduces new restrictions; Dr Fauci not surprised that Trump caught coronavirus
In the UK, the government is still facing resistance over its attempt to move Greater Manchester into a tier 3 lockdown. The mayor, Andy Burnham, has said he is willing to resolve the impasse but won't "just roll over" at the sight of a cheque.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide passed 40m on Monday, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally. Total infections reached 40,050,902 on Monday. There have been 1,113,750 deaths, most of which have been in the US, followed by Brazil and India. Continue reading... |

| Prado's first post-lockdown show reignites debate over misogyny Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:00 PM PDT Exhibition exploring how women have been treated in art world runs into criticism The last face that meets visitors to the Prado's first post-lockdown exhibition is one of the very few that appears to look the spectator squarely in the eye. The cool gaze of the Portuguese-Spanish artist María Roësset – free of guilt, shame, saccharine virtue or predatory intent – comes as something of a relief after the sanctimonious, salacious and often sad series of pictures that precede it. | New Zealand journalist feted for brutal takedown of minor party politician Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:25 PM PDT Tova O'Brien's interview with Jami-Lee Ross, who has been accused of spreading misinformation, praised as 'a masterclass' A New Zealand journalist is being praised around the world for her determined effort to shut down the spread of Covid-19 conspiracy theories during an interview with a minor party politician. Newshub's political editor, Tova O'Brien, interviewed the leader of the Advance New Zealand party, Jami-Lee Ross. The party failed to secure enough votes in Saturday's general election to enter parliament, after peddling rumours and misinformation on social media about the coronavirus. Continue reading... |

The feline Nazca line, dated to between 200BC and 100BC, emerged during work to improve access to one of the hills that provides a natural vantage point from which many of the designs can be seen. | Revealed: chaining, beatings and torture inside Sudan's Islamic schools Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:15 PM PDT Two-year BBC News Arabic investigation uncovers horrific conditions, with boys as young as five facing violence and sexual abuse An April evening in the suburbs of Khartoum. After months of undercover work, I had learned to time my visits to khalwas, Sudan's Islamic schools, to coincide with evening prayers. I entered while the sheikhs (teachers) and 50-odd boys dressed in their white djellabas were busy praying. As they knelt, I heard the clanking of chains on the boys' shackled legs. I sat down behind them and started filming, secretly. I began investigating after allegations emerged of abuse inside some of these schools: children kept in chains, beaten and sexually abused. Khalwas have existed in Sudan for centuries. There are more than 30,000 of them across the country where children are taught to memorise the Qur'an. They are run by sheikhs who usually provide food, drink and shelter, free of charge. As a result, poor families often send their children to khalwas instead of public schools. Continue reading... |

| 'It is serious and intense': white supremacist domestic terror threat looms large in US Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:00 PM PDT From the frequency of attacks to the scope of ambition, racist terror groups – encouraged by the president, are showing unparalleled activity in the modern era On 6 October Chad Wolf, the acting secretary of homeland security, released his department's annual assessment of violent threats to the nation. Analysts didn't have to dig deep into the assessment to discover its alarming content. In a foreword, Wolf wrote that he was "particularly concerned about white supremacist violent extremists who have been exceptionally lethal in their abhorrent, targeted attacks in recent years. [They] seek to force ideological change in the United States through violence, death, and destruction." Continue reading...This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

| Donald Trump heads to Arizona as coronavirus surge grips US – US politics live Posted: 19 Oct 2020 02:20 AM PDT
President Donald Trump is appearing today in both Prescott and Tucson in Arizona. Reid Wilson last night for the Hill previewed the trip, saying that undecided voters in the state are wary of Trump and craving stablility. Wilson writes: The few Arizona voters still struggling to make up their minds between Trump and Biden are weighing a conservative agenda they generally favor led by a candidate they do not like against a more liberal agenda they do not entirely support led by a candidate who comes across as far more empathetic. In interviews with undecided and late-deciding voters here, many said they had supported Trump four years ago, but that his behavior had either disqualified him in their minds or raised serious questions about whether he is fit for another term in office.
A lawsuit seeking to prevent Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond is scheduled to go to trial Monday. The plaintiffs, a group of Richmond residents who live near the monument, filed suit after Northam ordered the removal of the statue in June amid the outcry caused by the police killing of George Floyd. |

| To tackle sexual violence in Bangladesh the culture of victim blaming must end Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:45 PM PDT There are still those who ask 'what was she wearing'. An urgent conversation is needed about toxic masculinity and consent There has been growing outrage among Bangladeshi citizens over the past two weeks at a string of gruesome gang rapes and sexual assaults reported in the media. There is a deep lack of confidence that the victims will ever get justice, as well as anxiety over the traditionally-held view that a woman and her family lose "honour" when she is raped. The question remains: did the woman ask to hold this honour that has been bestowed upon her? Is a woman's honour held in her body? According to Ain O Salish Kendra, an organisation in Bangladesh that provides legal assistance to victims of violence, between January and September this year, men raped 975 women, killed 43 women after raping them, and attempted to rape 204 others. This is not the actual number of rape cases, but the figure that has been reported publicly – the true toll will be a lot higher. Continue reading... |
| Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:38 PM PDT Māori are calling for much-needed systemic change – but the question is whether Labour is willing to deliver it It was one of the most gripping showdowns of Saturday night's election – the Māori Party's Rawiri Waititi and Labour's Tamati Coffey were neck-and-neck until the end. Counting on the night put Waititi ahead by a narrow 415 votes, but the final result will come down to the remaining half a million "special votes" yet to be counted. Continue reading... |

'If I lose … what do I do? I'd rather run against somebody who is extraordinarily talented, at least this way I can go and lead my life.' Trump again insisted that he was immune from Covid-19, saying he 'got better fast' and that he 'can now jump into the audience and give you all a big kiss, the women and the men' Continue reading... |
