| Coronavirus live news: Paris due to unveil tighter restrictions; record weekly rise in global cases Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:25 AM PDT Paris move would follow curbs in other French cities; world reports just under two million Covid-19 cases in one week
The Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced the cancellation of this year's Vienna Opera Ball, a glamorous society event that usually marks the peak of the Austrian ball season. The government cited rising Covid-19 infection rates in the Alpine country as the reason for calling off the event, which was planned for 11 February 2021. While the Vienna State Opera put a lot of effort into security concepts, the wellbeing of participants could not have been guaranteed, the government said.

| Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:00 PM PDT When the scale of the coronavirus pandemic became clear in March, people with symptoms were advised to contact NHS 111. Olufemi did so. But his family fear he was given the wrong advice Curled up in the foetal position in the passenger seat of his ex-girlfriend's car, weeping uncontrollably, Lobby Akinnola didn't want the journey to ever end, but he also wanted to get there – now. What was waiting for him at the end of the two-hour drive from Lobby's London flatshare to his family home in Leamington Spa was unimaginably harrowing: his beloved dad, Olufemi Akinnola, lying dead on the living room floor. Lobby's mum, Atinuke, had found him that morning, 26 April. The family had thought he was recovering from Covid-19, but they had been wrong. The paramedics had come, but there was nothing they could do, and now the family was waiting with Femi for Lobby to arrive from London, before they called the funeral home. Lobby was scared to go, but he had to be there. He needed to say goodbye to his dad. *** Continue reading... |

| Kissing cowboys: the queer rodeo stars bucking a macho American tradition Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:00 PM PDT Photographer Luke Gilford couldn't believe his eyes when he first stumbled across a gay rodeo. He set out to capture the joyous, tender, authentic world he saw there Luke Gilford was at a Pride event in northern California in 2016 when he was drawn to a stand by the sound of Dolly Parton singing 9 to 5. What he found there would change his life. Members of the local chapter of the Golden State Gay Rodeo Association were promoting what they do, and how they live. Gilford looked on in astonishment. "I grew up around this world," he says. "I had no idea this existed. I really didn't think it was real." A sought-after film-maker and photographer, to whom Barbara Kruger is a mentor and Pamela Anderson and Jane Fonda muses, Gilford cuts a striking figure. A New York Times profile that same year recounted how you could often catch a glimpse of him downtown, in a hand-me-down cowboy hat, football-style shoulder pads over his bare torso. | What can horse mutilations in France teach us about our collective state of mind? | Laura Spinney Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:00 AM PDT The incidents may be a natural phenomenon, but the pandemic has made us more accepting of the sinister The animals have been found missing ears and genitals, with eyes torn out, or deep, clean cuts to their bodies. The recent spate of horse mutilations reported across France has provoked horror and outrage. Satanic cults have been mooted, or individual perpetrators engaged in copycat crimes. But what if the panic reveals more about our collective state of mind in 2020 than any new and twisted form of human behaviour? The reports started trickling in in January, but they picked up dramatically over the summer, until they were providing a sinister drumbeat to an already strange holiday season in France. Around 150 investigations of animal cruelty are under way, in more than half the country's 96 metropolitan departments. Internet sleuths put the number of incidents closer to 200. | Aid agencies warn of Covid-19 crisis in refugee camps as winter approaches Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:15 PM PDT Displaced populations across the Middle East, already in cramped, unhygienic conditions, face a health catastrophe as infections rise Throughout the coronavirus pandemic an abiding fear had stalked the world's most vulnerable populations. Millions of people displaced by conflict in the Middle East watched with alarm as Europe and the west withered under a caseload that stretched first-world healthcare systems to their limits. They saw field hospitals being set up in capitals. Governments buckling under the strain. The developing world offering aid to the developed. It seemed inevitable that the contagion would reach those less able to absorb its impact. And now, as second and third waves of Covid-19 surge around the globe, worst fears are being realised. Several months into the crisis, the virus has crept into the populations of refugees and internally displaced people, where stopping its advance will be close to impossible. Up to 15 million people across the region, many of whom were already at risk of disease, now face a rampant spread through their communities. Continue reading... |

| Jacinda Ardern's Covid success gives National little room to move on policy Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:27 PM PDT Labour's Covid policies and popularity means the opposition is effectively cornered when it comes to presenting a different choice to voters Its record on eliminating Covid-19 and bringing a second outbreak under control has drawn praise for New Zealand from around the world. Now, the centre-left Labour party, led by the wildly popular Jacinda Ardern, faces an election bolstered by their success in containing the virus – but darkened by the shadow of the country's worst recession in years. At the polls on 17 October, voters will be asked to choose between slightly different approaches to who would be allowed to enter the country, whether border quarantine should be government-managed or partially privatised, and the best economic recipe to recover from the pandemic. | 'Our 1945 moment': UN faces fears of a 'great fracture' at general assembly Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:46 AM PDT Amid prerecorded speeches, secretary-general issues warning over US-China rivalry at an unprecedented moment "Today, we face our own 1945 moment," the United Nations secretary general, António Guterres, said as he opened the UN's 75th general assembly, to a thinly populated chamber of socially distanced diplomats. Guterres meant the historical reference as a call to action inspired by the generation who had survived the second world war and sought to build a new world. A similarly concerted effort, he said, would be needed to defeat Covid and the pandemics that may follow, and the climate emergency. Continue reading... |
| First TV debate between Ardern and Collins avoids being a horror show Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:20 AM PDT Spooky opening gives way to a leaders' showdown with little drama and lacking in spark There was high drama at the first televised debate last night between New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, and the leader of the opposition National party, Judith Collins, when host John Campbell crept out of the darkness and onto the studio floor in the spooky opening seconds. His eyes were bulging. He clutched some kind of weapon in his hands. Campbell has always had an excitable, untamed spirit, and his menacing entrance made him look like Michael Myers from Halloween except in a grey check suit. And that was it for the high drama. After the curious stage direction, Campbell gave a warm welcome to Ardern and Collins, and revealed that he was holding nothing more sinister than a brand new clipboard. The next 90 minutes were all downhill. Continue reading... |
