According to the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 tracker, which relies on official government data, there are 29,190,588 confirmed infections worldwide. | Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:00 PM PDT 'Mally' Kennedy was a dedicated father of three girls working as a London bus driver. Would PPE and an earlier lockdown have saved him? Ellen Kennedy had only been living with her dad for a few weeks, but already they had settled into an easy routine. Mervyn Kennedy, known to all as Mally, would wake up at about 9am and ask his youngest daughter to go for breakfast with him. Ellen, 31, would demur – the vegan options around their south London flat weren't great – but Mally would insist, and so they would walk together to the Pond cafe in Thornton Heath. Mally always ate breakfast at the Pond cafe before a shift, because it was opposite his bus depot. The 67-year-old bus driver had moved to the UK from Zimbabwe in 1999 in search of a better life for his wife, Patricia, and daughters, Melanie, Penny and Ellen. And it more or less was a better life, although Patricia died suddenly in 2004, a loss from which Mally never really recovered. Continue reading... |

In the light of Sir John Bell's comment about how the second wave has arrived (see 9.20am), it is worth flagging up the last graph from the government's coronavirus dashboard showing the pattern for new cases. It was only published at about 6.30pm yesterday, later than usual.
Good morning. Boris Johnson won his first vote on the internal market bill very easily last night, but the morning papers won't bring him much comfort because several are focusing on the coronavirus testing crisis, with large numbers of people continuing to report that they cannot get a test. Tuesday's Metro: Tuesday's Telegraph: Tuesday's Times: I think what's going wrong is the second wave. A month ago they had spare capacity in testing - significant spare capacity - but I think what has been underestimated was the speed at which the second wave would arrive, but also the pressure put on the system from children returning to school, and the testing demands associated with that, and people increasingly out and about. So, I think they are definitely behind the curve in terms of getting the necessary tests for what we need today. This will get worse because of course we haven't hit winter yet - we haven't all started to sniffle, get fevers, get colds, and that's going to add additional confusion to the problem. The demand will go up. The real question is whether they can get supply in a position where it can outpace demand, and that's the challenge at the moment. Part of the problem here is that the government isn't being as open as trusts would like about how big this problem is, how widespread it is, and how long it's going to last. So, it's difficult to get full information. Governments, when they get operational problems like this, face a choice, which is do they try and politically communicate their way out of them - say, for example, 'look how many million tests we've done', or 'we're going to do a very ambitious moonshot next year' - or do they calmly and soberly explain the appropriate detail of what's going on, and in doing that help and support those organisations ... who are trying to deal with these problems. And I suppose there's a pretty clear view from our trust leaders that they really want rather less of the former and rather more of the latter. | Ice detainees faced medical neglect and hysterectomies, whistleblower alleges Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:55 PM PDT Nurse Dawn Wooten says she was demoted and reprimanded when she spoke out about practices at Georgia detention center Immigrants in a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) detention center in Georgia are being subjected to horrific conditions and treatment, including "jarring medical neglect" and a high rate of hysterectomies among women, according to a whistleblower complaint filed by several legal advocacy groups on behalf of a nurse who works there. The nurse, Dawn Wooten, has been practicing for more than 10 years, three of which she was employed at Irwin county detention center in Georgia, which is run by private corporation LaSalle Corrections. The complaint, filed on her behalf on 14 September, accused the center of negligence, including poor safety precautions surrounding Covid-19 and generally hazardous and unsanitary conditions. It is preferable to blaming ourselves. But a fish whose only problem was overfishing, a fish stock that could be saved simply by a ban on all commercial fishing, would be very rare. It would be an enviably easy problem to fix. The salmon is as magnificent an animal as anything on the Serengeti – beautiful in its many phases; thrilling in its athleticism; moving in its strength, determination and courage – and it would be a tragedy if it were to disappear.
