| Inside Somalia: how Covid-19 created a perfect storm in a humanitarian crisis Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:30 AM PDT Covid could be 'the straw that breaks the camel's back' health workers warn. Photographers Fardosa Hussein and Ismail Taxta captured a country battling seemingly insurmountable odds Considering the country was in the middle of a pandemic, the silence at the entrance to Mogadishu's De Martini hospital felt almost numbing, the expected noise replaced by stillness in its deserted, sanitised halls. It sent a chill through me as I arrived in May to capture the work being done at what was, until recently, the Somali capital's only hospital taking coronavirus patients. It felt like a prison. | Yusef Salaam: 'Trump would have had me hanging from a tree in Central Park' Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:00 AM PDT Wrongly jailed for gang rape – a case which inspired Trump to call for the death penalty – Salaam has poured his experiences into a novel about hope, justice and race If Donald Trump had got his way I wouldn't be speaking to Yusef Salaam right now. "Had his ad taken full effect we would have been hanging from trees in Central Park," Salaam says matter-of-factly. "People wanted our blood running in the streets." You've probably seen the ad in question: it's infamous. In 1989, a white investment banker was raped and left for dead in Central Park. Five black and brown teenagers, including 15-year-old Salaam, were charged with her rape. Two weeks after the attack, before any of the kids had faced trial, Trump took out a full-page advert in multiple New York papers calling for the death penalty. His inflammatory stunt is credited with prejudicing public opinion and contributing to the Central Park Five – now known as the Exonerated Five – going to prison for something they didn't do. The boys' story was retold last year in the Emmy-winning Netflix drama When They See Us, directed by Ava DuVernay. Continue reading... |

The 46-year-old was once a fan of Barack Obama, voting for him twice before switching her allegiance to Donald Trump four years ago. Kristen, who doesn't want her last name used, was minded to back Trump again in November but was holding off to see who Biden chose as his vice-presidential running mate. Continue reading... |
| Aged care minister won't resign despite Labor's continued attacks on government's Covid response Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:27 AM PDT Richard Colbeck says his recent missteps are not indicative of the work he's doing 'more broadly in the portfolio'
Aged care minister Richard Colbeck insists he has the confidence of the prime minister, and has not considered resigning, as Labor resumed its parliamentary attack on the government's record during the Covid-19 pandemic. Colbeck told reporters on Monday his recent missteps, like failing to recall the number of Australians who had died in residential aged care during the pandemic, were not indicative "of the work that I'm doing more broadly in the portfolio". Mitchell, who was secretary of state from 2010 to 2012, said the DfID, which merges with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 2 September to become the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), had contributed "huge heft to global Britain" in terms of soft power. | New Zealand's astounding wealth gap challenges our 'fair go' identity | Max Rashbrooke Posted: 30 Aug 2020 04:50 PM PDT New data shows the richest 1% are worth 68 times more than a typical New Zealander The extent of wealth inequality in supposedly egalitarian New Zealand has been laid bare by figures showing the wealthiest individuals have over NZ$140bn (US$93bn) stashed away in trusts – and overall have nearly 70 times more assets than the typical Kiwi. The new data, drawn from the 2017-18 Household Economic Survey, are likely to underestimate true inequality, as the ultra-wealthy are generally reluctant to take part in such surveys.
